"Riding Lessons" by Sara Gruen was an instant choice for me after I read "Water For Elephants". I will be the first to admit. I have this crazy impulsive habit of rushing out to buy every title I can find by a certain author if I love one of their books. "Water For Elephants" was one of the best books I have ever read so I searched Sara Gruen to see what else she had.

The book was beautifully written and is about a world-class equestrienne who was in a tragic accident with her horse at age 18. After the accident, she vowed to never get on a horse again. Many years later, Annemarie's husband leaves her and she looks to make a new start at her dying father's horse farm. She struggles with her teenager daughter, her parents, and her memories of her riding career.

My friend, Nancy Barry (right), wrote a one-woman play which was performed by another friend, Kristen Underwood (left). Nancy is a college English professor who had breast cancer at age 45. The play was brilliant, the acting was brilliant - in short, it was a triumph!

“Every day I have failures. A lot of things I do, I do them twice and it’s always the second time around that I get it right. The first time is always crash and burn - failure, but then I do it again, and success! A while back, I was due to attend a wedding and the night before I needed to learn these dance steps. It was an African wedding and there was a lot to learn. It was 11pm and the two people I was dancing with were resigned to the idea, but I wanted to learn. I was optimistic about the whole thing and my friends couldn’t understand why. It’s because I had let go of the consequences, the fear of failure, and embraced the experience. The wedding day came, I danced. Yes, I made a lot of mistakes. It wasn’t perfect, but I did it.”

A Kodiak Middle School eighth-grader catches a thrown Frisbee after an unsuccessful block by middle school PE teacher Marcus Dunbar Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 27, 2013. The eighth-graders sat on Baranof Park's artificial turf as Dunbar demonstrated the rules of Ultimate Frisbee.

Liam started swimming lessons yesterday! There are 6 kids in his class. He goes this week and next week.

at age of 4, Mia was finally ready to take her swimming lessons. We signed her up for an 8-continued-day semi-private lesson with a great teacher Krysta. She was very patient and caring. Accompanied by her dear little friend Eliana at the same class. Everything went very smooth. The girls had so much fun!

It was sure a huge milestone for Mia since she had a great fear about putting her face in the water (just like mom, hehe) Now, since she enjoyed it very much, we are in the 2nd session. The goal is to get her being comfortable in the water and hopefully she will be able to swim in the future.

A religious lesson at the Mosque of Ibn Al-Arabi in Salhieh, Damascus.

Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi (1165-1240) is one of the most famous Muslim philosophers. He was born in southern Spain and lived during the golden era of openness and tolerance in Arab-ruled Andalusia. He spent years traveling around the Arab world before finally settling in Damascus, where he completed his greatest book Al-Futuhat Al-Makkiyyah (Meccan Revelations), which is an encyclopedia of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) and Sufi teachings. He was buried in Damascus; and the Mosque, pictured above, was built in his honor by Ottoman Sultan Selim I in 1516.

Throughout his life, Ibn Arabi preached tolerance among all faiths. In one of his most famous poems, he considers his heart "a center of love":

O Marvel! a garden amidst the flames.

My heart has become capable of every form:

It is a pasture for gazelles and a convent for Christian monks,

and a temple for idols and the pilgrim's Kaa'ba,

and the tables of the Torah and the book of the Quran.

I follow the religion of Love:

Whatever way Love's camels take,

that's my religion and my faith.

Camp staff (counselors) usually care for the campers at night. But because we're nice, we give them one night off to go have pizza. I hung out with the oldest boys and we had a raucous time. Carlos here insisted on using his device to speak to me in Spanish, even though I didn't understand a word. For a bunch of kids who use technology to talk, they were a very loud, talkative bunch.

Taking surf lessons from the Goofy Foot Surf School in Lahaina, Maui.

The instructor (who was a great and stereotypical surf dude straight out of central casting) would tell us when to start paddling to catch the wave correctly, which was very helpful. As I learned a few days later, knowing when to start paddling isn't all that easy.

Photo by Kayla Klassen. Harley has become so thin since Cleo went into heat again. He doesn't eat...all he is concerned about is how he can get Cleo's diaper off. I then started putting diapers on him as well, but Cleo now helps him to disgard his as well. Little bratts...gotta love em.

The mirror finish on the blade edge is lost, if you fail to finish sanding the slabs to a good fit BEFORE attaching them... also, using too much epoxy means more sanding, and again, a loss of the mirrored edge.

This was neat to watch. This family, mom, dad, son, two daughters and grandpa, set up right next to us. While dad watched, grandpa took the boy out for his first surfing lesson. I took a whole series of shots, but I think this was the best. Within 45 minutes or so, he stood up and rode one all the way in. I think grandpa was an old time surfer with lots of experience.

I've nothing left to say.

I've nothing left to think.

I've nothing left to do.

But move on.
