The term minimalism is used to describe a trend in design and architecture wherein the subject is reduced to its necessary elements. Minimalistic design has been highly influenced by Japanese traditional design and architecture.

The work of De Stijl artists is a major source of reference for such work: De Stijl expanded the ideas that could be expressed by very particularly organizing such basic elements as lines and planes.

Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe adopted the motto "Less is more" to describe his aesthetic tactic of arranging the numerous necessary components of a building to create an impression of extreme simplicity by enlisting every element and detail to serve multiple visual and functional purposes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNSET - Florida Everglades

*[Not every sunset is a 'blaze-of-glory'. Some nights there is nothing! No clouds, no color, no drama...nothing. And then there are the nights with a 'blue-cloudless-sky', and the only thing you seem to get is 'what I call' a simple 'ball-drop'. Just 'the sun' dropping into the western everglades horizon. Nothing more, nothing less. But it often forces you to 'get creative'! Why not...you're already there! LOL]

Works on Paper

Works on Paper from the Collection

curated by Sabine Schaschl, Evelyne Bucher and Eliza Lips

28 October 2021 to 16 January 2022

For the first time, Museum Haus Konstruktiv is opening an exhibition exclusively presenting works on paper from its own collection. On the basis of selected prints and drawings as well as gouaches, collages and photographs, we will show the central role this medium plays in the work of constructivist-concrete and conceptual artists.

In addition to their paintings on canvas and their sculptural works with granite, brass, Plexiglas and other materials, many representatives of Constructivist-Concrete art have also worked with paper. Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, Karl Gerstner and Gottfried Honegger, for example, have helped shape modern Swiss graphic art through their innovative designs for advertising posters, advertisements, books and company brochures, and have helped it achieve international renown. And also for their free artistic work, some artists working in the field of constructive-concrete dealt intensively with the challenges and possibilities of graphics and with the application of different printing techniques.

Until now, the Museum Haus Konstruktiv has rarely focused on printmaking. The exhibition Works on Paper - Paper Works from the Collection closes this gap. A selection of printed works such as lithographs, copper engravings and serigraphs will be presented. In addition, there are selected collection works on paper, also by contemporary artists. Graphic art, drawing, sketch, draft, gouache, collage and photography enter into an associative interplay of powerful settings, subtle nuances and unexpected accents.

The entire third floor of the museum thus opens up a diverse, cross-generational insight into the work of constructive-concrete and conceptual artists* on and with paper.

With works by: Getulio Alviani (1939-2018), Arman (1928-2005), Frank Badur (*1944), Horst Bartnig (*1936), Etienne Béothy (1897-1961), Max Bill (1908-1994), Walter Dexel (1890-1973), Norman Dilworth (*1931), Florian Dombois (*1966), Burhan Doğançay (1929-2013), Rita Ernst (*1956), Corsin Fontana (*1944), Ryan Gander (*1976), Ludwig Gebhard (1933-2007), Karl Gerstner (1930-2017), Hans Jörg Glattfelder (*1939), Jean Gorin (1899-1981), Camille Graeser (1892-1980), Wade Guyton (*1972), Marguerite Hersberger (*1943), Anthony Hill (1930-2020), Gottfried Honegger (1917-2016), Malcolm Hughes (1920-1997), Karin Ilse Käppeli-von Bülow (*1943), Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), Richard Paul Lohse (1902-1988), Verena Loewensberg (1912-1986), Peter Lowe (*1938), Elena Lux-Marx (*1944), Kenneth Martin (1905-1984), Thomas Moor (*1988), Jean Pfaff (*1945), Ruth Pfalzberger (*1949), Sam Porritt (*1979), Dieter Roth (1930-1998), Manfred Schoch (1932-2015), Maya Stange (*1926), Jeffrey Steele (1931-2021), Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943), Georges Vantongerloo (1886-1965), Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), Markus Weggenmann (*1953), Gido Wiederkehr (*1941), Gillian Wise (1936-2020), Susan York (*1951), Shizuko Yoshikawa (1934-2019), Beat Zoderer (*1955).
