Somehow my wife's Swarovski Toucan lost his beak. This challenge reminded me it was on my desk awaiting repair so I combined this week's theme with a task needing to be done at home. Voila!
Every tradition, every myth, is based on a grain of truth...
Recent evidence suggests that the easter bunny originated somewhere in what was once the supercontinent Gondwana, 2000 to 2000000000 years ago.
Several factors were important in the creation of the easter bunny story:
- dinosaurs would lay their eggs at this time of year
- their eggs were nutritious
- prehistoric man would be really hungry after a long winter
- being male and hungry predisposed him to making stupid decisions e.g.. stealing dinosaur eggs
- ancient megafauna like megarabbit were slow moving and easy to kill, but not as nutritious as dinosaur eggs
- if you wore megabunny ears like a hat, it would make you (prehistoric man) appear bigger and thus scarier to dinosaurs, increasing your chance of successfully stealing dinosaur eggs and surviving to procreate another day from 1:32544756485 to 1:7362486346
- prehistoric man had not yet mastered statistics or critical thought.
With these well documented facts put together, we can now appreciate how the story of the "easter bunny" and "easter eggs" came to be.
Ofcourse, like all stories, it has changed somewhat over the years, but the main message of Easter has remained the same - chocolate eggs taste better than real eggs, but are far less nutritious.
Happy hunting, and happy Easter!
Tympanuchus pallidicinctus
The Texas panhandle was the last stop on our recent chicken run and the target bird was the Lesser Prairie Chicken. We were definitely not disappointed as there were close to 20 males and at least three females on the lek putting on one heck of a show, often at such close range that I wasn’t able to even focus on the bird. It was a great way to wrap things up.

-Il rosso è uno dei colori dello spettro percepibile dall'occhio umano. Ha la frequenza minore e, conseguentemente, la lunghezza d'onda più lunga di tutti gli altri colori visibili (tra 630 e 760 nanometri).
-Frequenze ancora minori ricadono nell'infrarosso.

When I got up this morning, the smoke looked like this to the east. It's not that the worst is over, far from it. The worst is not over. But the winds have died down, which kept the smoke from being pushed towards the southwest and into Glendale. For this morning, the smoke drifted to the south. Once could still smell the smoke in the air, and during most of the morning ashes would float down like snowflakes. That ended by the afternoon.
As long as the Troy Burger restaurant remains open I am optimistic about the fate of Glendale.
I wrote recently that I sensed we were starting something new. A phase of realisation and acceptance of our son's challenges. Less and less he is able to, or have the desire to venture into the garden with me. Instead of walking or wheeling along the paths, his preference is to stay close to the safety of his 'window' and just look. Often with unseeing eyes, but occasionally watching my every move out there.
Time is always against me in spending time doing what I love out in the garden and so, I am starting to simplify the layout, creating a view from the window rather than discovering it all as we used to as we wandered. I am lifting paths and borders and laying turf, bringing focus onto key specimen plants which our son can see as he just looks out.
As we started this project he was gripped by another seizure and as I cradled him on the lawn until he recovered sufficiently to sit on the garden bench recovering further. The future really is uncertain, but my attempts at creating a world through his window need changing to accommodate his needs to day.
I hope you will like what I create, it will be simple, but it will also provide, support and reassurance .... and maybe more stories :-))

Summer has some less welcome effects.
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is a type of inflammation in the nose that occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air. Signs and symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy, and watery eyes, and swelling around the eyes.
Stay safe, get vaccinated when you can.

The 20th March would have been Matthew's 35th birthday, but sadly, he was still-born! (He was the third of what would ultimately become five children!). Averil and I try to do something special just to mark this special day, and on this occasion, we decided to visit the rather remote Wainuiomata Beach on the south-easterly corner of New Zealand's North Island...
The weather was warm and calm; the drive out to the beach was pleasant and very picturesque as the road wound it's way along the valley of the Wainui Stream...
As we neared the coast, the lush forests gave way to salt-encrusted stunted vegetation, but hey: there was still beauty all around us never-the-less!
Now... A golden rule on New Zealand beaches (or any beach in the world) is "Swim between the flags!", but there were no flags or lifeguards at this beach, so swimming was never on our agenda. But if you're thinking this would surely be an OK beach for a swim on a hot day, think again - and look at the wave to the right of this scene... It's just beginning to rise out of the Pacific Ocean, and it's still got a little way to go before it reaches the shore... Yet already, it's beginning to look very ominous...
I'll show you what happened tomorrow...!!!
Continue to keep well everyone, and a big "Thank You" for taking the time and the trouble to leave a Comment...! It's always nice to hear from you, and your comments are always greatly appreciated...!
I wasted a whole afternoon trying to take a clean picture of this historical church. I came back early the next morning and took this pano. The light was not nearly as interesting as the day before but with a lot less people.

Sorry I've been MIA...it's always hard starting a new assignment. There is so much to learn and never enough time. I haven't lifted a camera in two weeks...but I will try for a photo shoot this weekend :).
I'm trying some different styles of photo processing and this one is inspired by one of my favorite photogrophers, Shana. Check our her stream...it's fantastic!

We had a bit of fun with a spare piece of matting a couple of weeks ago. I thought Shem's expression was great. Initially he was pretending to be a maniquin and I kept moving his head and so on. As you can see from his expression, he looks less and less impressed in each capture.

Somehow Avengers: Age of Ultron is already less than a month away, and I’m in quite a rush to get all of these finished before then! Thankfully, I’ve been making plenty of progress and have even finished a few since my last photo.
Ok so just to make it clear for all of you, finished figures include:
-Captain America
-Scarlet Witch
-Quicksilver
-Hulk
-Thor
Then as I said already I’m kind of going out of my mind to finish the rest on time lol, and I should also mention that Hawkeye’s face is still a placeholder as I have yet to paint it.
So once all of the Avengers and Ultron are finished, I’ll be adding a few details to the Hulkbuster that Legohaulic built for the showcase video before finally recording the whole thing!
Of course this IS a preview, and therefore quite literally everything you see here is subject to change at any given time :)
Let me know what you think so far!
Oh and, HAPPY EASTER!!!
Since my previous outing in Hawrelak Park was so productive, I decided to give it rerun honors and was not disappointed because I came across two more duck species I had not encountered before. After much ado, I believe this to be a Lesser Scaup male, simply because the highest point of the head seems to be at the rear of the head (reverse true for the Greater Scaup) and because we see purple iridescence on the head which we would not (according to my sources birding.about.com/od/identifyingbirds/a/scaupidentificati...) on the Greater Scaup. Nothing in life ever is easy and one of the markings, the black nail at the front of the bill extends beyond the nail which is a sign for a Greater Scaup. However, since this was seen in a fairly small pond and not in coastal waters, that also points to the Lesser Scaup. But, really, I’ll let the experts make the final call on this and may end up revising the title and the byline. Some people find it exciting to research and find out what actually it is you got a picture of; I’d much rather take a picture and know what it is (gives you way more time for concentrated beer consumption). Regardless, I was happy to be able to run across him and he seems to have a bit of a dreamy expression, possibly caused by the female being in the area and he’s wondering perhaps perhaps perhaps.

Secret #5: I am a very guarded person…. I’m not one of those people that will tell you my whole life story in the first 5 mins you meet me. It takes me time to get to know people and really trust them before I open up. I usually just sit back and watch,I have a hard time just letting loose and throwing caution to the wind. I wish I didn’t, I wish I could be more carefree and less worried about what people think. It’s something I am learning with age… and trying to let go of. Not really sure where it comes from: It could be from being the oldest child, with a single mother so I grew up really quick and had to help take care of my sisters. I was the responsible one, the one who helped take care of everything.
