It was a sad day today (8/7/2023) as friends and family gathered to memorialize Joe Elliott. Joe passed away on July 6th, 2023, less than three weeks after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
I’ve known Joe since 1981, when he was one of the first people I met after I started attending Star Base Andromeda weekly meetings locally — I was 18 and he was 15. He was the younger brother of Diane Elliott Taurins, and was filled with exuberance, energy and creativity about all things fannish. For SBA, he designed silk screen masters for our club t-shirt AND for a Greatest American Hero t-shirt (the supersuit symbol), which was and remains my all-time favorite TV show.
Though he mainly drifted away from SBA involvement by the mid-to-late 1990s, I reconnected with him again in the past 15 years as he became a downtown library regular. He’d become an artist, working mainly in abstract paintings (which are, frankly, beautiful), and I’ve enjoyed seeing his work in downtown Lincoln galleries.
I have many, many fond memories of times spent with or around Joe. Also of our more recent conversations related to his art and eclectic interests. He’d poured himself into the hunt for unique decor and collectibles to be found at thrift stores and garage sales, always finding things that matched his quirky and bohemian personality.
Local fandom has lost a memorable member. I’ve lost a friend of 42 years. And my sympathies and condolences go out to Diane and her extended family on their unquestionably more personal loss. Goodbye, Joe! I’ll remember you fondly as the young man in the Star Trek movie costume handing out SBA flyers at 14th & “O” St. in 1982, and as the slightly-grizzled artist in the long overcoat and fedora in later years. Thank you for gifting me with your GAH shirt silk screen masters…that really meant a great deal to me!

(yes, that’s right…today, his memorial day, _would_ have been his 57th birthday)

I saw this field several weeks ago and was struck by the tire tracks leading through it. I've struggled a bit with processing it, the photos were taken at sunset and had this glorious warm light... but didn't have the contrast to fully bring out the tracks. My final solution, after playing with it for a while, was this black and white, contrasty version. What do you think?
