I wear Lena when I want my style to feel like a thought I’ve been meaning to say out loud—casual, chic, and entirely my own.
Grabbed the gear this afternoon and headed out to the north side of Hazelbrook to photgraph Lena Falls. These falls are relatively easy to access and are upstream from Oaklands Falls. It was a very stormy afternoon with rain belting down and the occasional ray of sunshine poking it's head via a break in the cloud cover. According to the Blue Mountains Geographical Encyclopaedia these falls are named after Helena (Lena) Russell, former postmistress of Hazelbrook and the daughter of Frederick Adams, who served on the local reserves trust.

Returning to old photo sessions to see how I would process them years later.

Lena is from the north of Russia. She lived in Moscow, working as a lawyer, for several years and then moved to London.
A sign on the corner of an abandoned building in Tucumcari, NM advertises Lena's Cafe. I found a photo of the cafe on Flickr that was taken in 2010. That location is now a marijuana store. There are at least eight weed stores in Tucumcari, a town of around 5,100.

I was out for a walk in the nearby Bosque de Bellver forest, camera in hand as always, but with no particular plans, when I came across a pretty little clearing that I had never noticed before. I was there, wondering how it would go for a doggy portrait, when cute little Ferrera trotted past, shortly followed by her owner Lena. Without a second thought, I called out to ask if I could take Ferrera's picture. Lena was very willing and helpful and it quickly turned into a mini photo shoot.
We did take more "standard" portrait style photos, with the subjects looking at or towards the camera, but this is the one I like best. I definitely could have given more guidance in the more posed shots. To be worked on.
It was an overcast but luminous day, just perfect, and this is the first time that I've actually photographed anyone in those conditions. How it shows in the results!
Lena is from Russia, and has been here for two years. She says she came here to learn Spanish. Ferrera is a mixed breed dog, around 7 months old (and all legs :) ), who had been abandoned. A real cutie and well on the way to becoming a very good, well educated dog.
We had a lot of fun, and in the next couple of weeks we are going to get together again, this time with Lena's 13 year daughter, to do a more planned portrait shoot. I'm really excited about that!
