This is my electro-acoustic guitar.
Unplugged, it sounds a bit quiet and boxy. These qualities make it the perfect guitar for "DADGAD" tuning, though.
Bored last night, I decided to take a self portrait. Something didn't look or feel right about it... then I realized, it's just another thing that us left handed people have to deal with. Oh well... could be worse.
ADRIAN BELEW
Adrian Belew (born December 23, 1949 as Robert Steven Belew in Covington, Kentucky) is an American guitarist and vocalist (and sometimes drummer, pianist and bass player), perhaps best known for his work as a member of the progressive rock group King Crimson, which he first joined in 1981. He has also released a number of solo albums for Island Records and Atlantic Records, and has worked with many other musicians. He was nominated for a Grammy in 2005, for his single, "Beat Box Guitar", which was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. In addition, Belew is well-regarded for his contributions, particularly on guitar, to various other artists' recordings. In 1977, he performed with Frank Zappa, appearing in Zappa's 1979 concert film Baby Snakes, as well as Zappa's controversial album Sheik Yerbouti, where Belew provides the memorable and scathing impersonation of Bob Dylan on the song Flakes. In addition to playing lead guitar on David Bowie's 1979 album, Lodger, he also supported him on his Stage world tour in 1978 and the Sound + Vision world tour in 1990 as musical director, playing guitar and singing backing vocals Belew's other session credits include the 1980 album Remain in Light by the Talking Heads, Lights Out by Peter Wolf, Earth Moving by Mike Oldfield and Paul Simon's landmark 1986 album Graceland. He worked with Laurie Anderson during the mid-1980s, appearing in her concert film Home of the Brave. He also worked with the Tom Tom Club on their first album in 1981. He also contributed to a Ryuichi Sakamoto album called Lefthanded dream in 1981 'together with Robin Scott ("M"). He even appeared in a series of Japanese advertisements promoting the mechanic company Daikin in which he emulated animal noises with his electric guitar and appeared as the conductor, conducting a symphony in which all the members were himself playing guitar. Belew's vocals are known for their distinct, sometimes manic feel - his singing voice is often compared to that of Talking Heads singer David Byrne. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he played on one Talking Heads album and toured with them in 1980 before being invited to join King Crimson.

Playing celtic music, with my Yamaha DADGAD guitar. Here I'm basically droning the sixth and fourfth strings (both tuned to D) while I play melodies on the upper strings.
This is my only true and authentic left-handed guitar. Oh, wait, I also have 2 left-handed electrics, but it's been years since I played them.

Derwent water-soluble graphite, Noodler's Black in a Lamy Vista EF, DS watercolors and General's watercolor pencils in a 3.5x5" Moleskine watercolor notebook. With my left hand, which is a miracle in and of itself.

Drawing myself from memory sort of tells me the state of my understanding of the architecture of the human face. Here it's clear to me what I still don't quite understand - the bridge of the nose.
This seemed like a good medium for this interesting paper.

I'm on to a more varied daily art practice. March-April 2010, I intend draw a different contemporary artist every day.
Today's artist, Patricio Villarroel, is an artist, musician, and ambassador of digital fingerpainting on flickr. Patricio's expansive spirit continuous to encompass the ever-growing and diverse group of iPhone/iPod touch artists and hold us together like an extended family. No matter what time of day I post, he's frequently commenting before I'm done describing.
Clearly revealing my ornery spirit, having told yesterday's subject, analog artist NC Mallory, that all my portraits were likely to be digital, I just couldn't resist drawing digital artist extraordinaire Patricio Villarroel with an actual pen on paper...

Patricio's paintings are varied and fanciful, colorful and adventurous, encompassing portraits, street scenes, and abstracts with elegant combinations of color and linework, and always expressing his genial spirit.

When I was in high school I fell out of a moving vehicle and broke (among other things) my shoulder. As a result I had to learn to write and do a lot of things with my left hand so I forced myself to become ambidextrous. I still obviously favor my right hand and arm… but if I had to I could do anything with my left side!

90% with my glasses off which allows me to see light & dark, mass & form, without getting distracted by details. But I just couldn't get the eyes at all - every time I put my glasses on to see how I was doing, I just had blobs sitting there. So the eyes and then some other details were done with glasses on. And I do see now that they're not lined up - haven't decided about trying to fix that tonight.
And can it be - that after declaring myself 'still colorful after all these years' for my birthday, that I'm falling in love - with greys???? These are all mixed from the same palette I've been using- alizarin, prussian, cad yellow hue (arylide) and white, lots of white. I'm really grooving on the subtle tonal differences.
