This morning I was following this little springtail in live view on my camera and suddenly it was bending over and I could see an "egg" coming. After exact 13 minutes the "egg" was a little darker and not so smooth anymore and then it was suddenly laid.
Don't tell me it is something else. :-)
I found this springtail in a swampy part of the forest where the soil is still soft and humid but now passable due to the drought.
It was not easy to get the light in, because there was a leaf partly over it like a cover. I could not remove the leaf and take the risk of frightening the springtail.

The one on top is a Sminthurinus reticulatus, the same springtail as in the previous picture, the other one is a very dark Sminthurinus elegans.

This simple light box set up is about as high tech as I get. Right now it's on the dining room table, because I needed to be downstairs the other day. It folds up like an art folder, to include pockets for the lights and table top tripod.....comes as a set. I've also posted the finished shot from this set up.

Some find it prehistoric monsters but for me, they have a big hug effect.
But do not be afraid, the animal is only about 3 mm in size and does not bite, does not sting... :-)
