Only a small part of my desire to fall off the planet is the fact that I am indeed learning to drive. While I am slowly becoming more comfortable with my level of control, on the whole I still find it intimidating and nerve wracking. And I haven't even gone to some of the busier parts of town yet. Today I ran into several imaginary cars because parking does not seem to be my strong suit. I have, however, survived a somewhat long journey on the interstate for a trip that preceded my falling off the planet.

WEEK 31 – Old-School BAM, Lexington, SC

Because teaching your toddler the history of One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer is just as important as that of the Underground Railroad and King Tut. (By the same token, I'm not quite sure why Dolly Parton and J.K. Rowling are a part of this series...)

Across the clouds I see my shadow fly

Out of the corner of my watering eye

A dream unthreatened by the morning light

Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

Well I started out down a dirty road

Started out all alone

And the sun went down as I crossed the hill

And the town lit up, the world got still

I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings

Coming down is the hardest thing

Well the good old days may not return

And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn

I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings

Coming down is the hardest thing

Well some say life will beat you down

Break your heart, steal your crown

So I've started out, for God knows where

I guess I'll know when I get there

I'm learning to fly, around the clouds

But what goes up must come down

I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings

Coming down is the hardest thing

After yesterday's buckle shinin', another new American word for me to learn was 'bobtail'.

Bobtailing is when a semi-truck is traveling without an attached trailer. This can occur when a semi-truck is in the process of picking up a trailer (and has no trailer to deliver) or is returning from delivery (and has no trailer to pick up). Bobtails are a common sight on Texas highways.

Once again, James McMurtry's lyrics are spot on. Unfortunately if you follow the song to the end, there is a sad ending.

"She's been green breaking horses when she's home from the road,

Waiting on dispatch to find her a load.

She leased all but the trap, ponies can't graze a thing,

Another bobtail of coastal ought to last them 'til spring.

Randy says not to worry, he'll feed while she's gone.

She's got the Freightliner idling half up on his lawn.

He don't like her driving when the northers come blue

But if the horses went hungry Lord knows what she'd do"

Swan & Cygnet on River Avon, Churchill Gardens, Salisbury

Learning the violin as an adult was a challenge. I had to learn a lot of new muscle controls. I had to learn how to hear and I had to learn to read music and music theory ideas like keys and time signature. I like it.

Early childhood education is the organized practice of educating those who are in early childhood, one of the most vulnerable stages in life. According to the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children), it spans the human life from birth to age eight.

Early childhood education often focuses on children learning through play.

The terms preschool education and kindergarten emphasize education around the ages of 3-6 years. The terms "early childhood learning," "early care," and "early education" are comparable with early childhood education. The terms Day care and Childcare do not embrace the educational aspects. Many childcare centers are now using more educational approaches. They are creating curricula and incorporating it into their daily routines to foster greater educational learning.

Researchers in the field and early childhood educators both view the parents as an integral part of the early childhood education process. Early childhood education takes many forms depending on the beliefs of the educator or parent.

Much of the first two years of life are spent in the creation of a child's first "sense of self" or the building of a first identity. This is a crucial part of children's makeup—how they first see themselves, how they think they should function, how they expect others to function in relation to them. For this reason, early care must ensure that in addition to employing carefully selected and trained caretakers, program policy must emphasize links with family, home culture, and home language, meaning caregivers must uniquely care for each child using Developmentally Appropriate Practice, Individually Appropriate Practice and Culturally Appropriate Practice. Care should support families rather than be a substitute for them.

If a young child doesn't receive sufficient nurturing, nutrition, parental/caregiver interaction, and stimulus during this crucial period, the child may be left with a developmental deficit that hampers his or her success in preschool, kindergarten, and beyond.

Worst-case scenarios such as those found in Russian and Romanian orphanages demonstrate how the lack of proper social interaction and development of attachment affect the developing child. Children must receive attention and affection to develop in a healthy manner.

Spin/ spinning 12/116

I was determined... but learning to spin a dreidel and capturing that spin with the camera... was harder than I imagined! After dozens of takes I finally got what I wanted... with the smaller of the two dreidels! ;D

“Into the distance, a ribbon of black

Stretched to the point of no turning back

A flight of fancy on a windswept field

Standing alone my senses reeled

A fatal attraction holding me fast how

How can I escape this irresistible grasp?"

We revisited the amazing Wright Brothers National Park on our 'Travels with Jason.' The memorial is placed very near the hill that Wilbur and Orville Wright used to propel their plane for the first test flights. It is definitely worth seeing if you are in the area and the beaches are quite beautiful too!
