This juvenile bald eagle is learning to maneuver on its perch while mom looks on. It kind of looks like a tightrope walker at the circus with its wings helping with balance.

The Cathedral of Learning, a Pittsburgh landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh's main campus in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Standing at 535 feet (>163 m), the 42-story Late Gothic Revival Cathedral is the tallest educational building in the Western hemisphere and the second tallest university building (fourth tallest educationally-purposed building) in the world. The Cathedral of Learning was commissioned in 1921 and ground was broken in 1926. The first class was held in the building in 1931 and its exterior finished in October 1934, prior to its formal dedication in June, 1937. The Cathedral is a steel frame structure overlaid with Indiana limestone and contains more than 2,000 rooms and windows. We returned to the Chicagoland area to snow...and quite a bit of snow for the New Year! I went out to Ryerson with the idea of photographing my favorite avenue of trees with the snow blowing around - trying to get this scene in the different seasons. I don't know how well you can see the snow here - trust me, it was blowing. And then I'd go ski.
When I was setting up, this father and young son were making their way very slowly down the path. Slowly, because the little guy, who was learning to cross-country ski, kept falling. Funny thing is, mom and other child were skiing on another path - and that child wasn't using poles, and not falling at all!
It was a fantastic day to be out skiing. Perfect snow. Such easy gliding. Great way to begin the New Year.
Learning the ropes of being an engineer is a 24/7 job just like everything else on the railroad. Here a newer engineer trainee works the control stand over while switching cars.
I want you to understand that I am not the same as yesterday. You were the turning point and although maybe not. I just wake up without talking to the pillow, learning to rest from you and my thoughts.
So as with every time I learn a new technique I must try it out on poor Domo. After our last time out doing portraits with a flash I really wanted to know how to achieve better results and nicer lighting.
Turns out, flash photography is a whole new world of learning and of course buying things! So I went and got a light stand with umbrella and some wireless receivers and here we are again.
We went to the same park as the last photo trip and this time tried some off camera flash stuff. It took a while to learn and honestly I'm still trying to understand it, but we took some really cool shots I think. Here's the first one hot off the presses.
For the learning challenge. I FINALLY caved. ;) Printed off the free "Friendship Definition" digi kit found at 2 peas: www.twopeasinabucket.com/shop/hero-arts/83717-digikit-ha-.... Used it in 2 sizes. Larger for the strip and a smaller size to use with the MS 3 Butterflies punch. Also used Line and Flower DB stamp with Versamark on thee background but it's hard to see in the picture. Notecard, gems and felt flower all HA.
Bought a 29 dollar 9 inch wood planer from Home Depot. Checked it to see how flatbthe sole was. It was pretty much a soup bowl. This is why good tools cost a small fortune. The planer was pretty much useless. Since I am learning how to hand scrape, this made the perfect project. I am working the front half of the soul first, then I will match the back half to the front. 3 days of chasing my tail, and I think I finally have a surface I can work with. When I am done the friction level between sole and wood should be mich lower and the wax should stay in place longer. I am turning a 29 dollar cheap ass Chinese plane into an expensive American made plane. At 120 an gour for the going scraping rate, this would be about 1000 dollar plane when all said and done. The sides and sole will be flat to at least 0.0001in - 0.0005in perpendicularity of sides with sole will be right up there as well.
