Welcome to Shaldon Sailing Club.
Shaldon Sailing Club, founded in 1823 and is the third oldest in the UK. We are a small friendly family Club; we race several classes of dinghy throughout the summer, from early April to late September. Boats are kept on Shaldon beach during the season. We also run a Sail Training Course for prospective sailors aged over 10 years- adults are welcome.
We have a small clubhouse which we hope to extend in the near future so that it will be suitable for the land-based training and small social functions.
Most of our races are on a Sunday- see the Fixture Schedule . Shaldon Sailing Club is an ideal club to learn to race with. Being a Family Club, we have both learners and experienced sailors competing in the races and we are not over- competitive so that ‘learners’ will not get discouraged.

Local naturalist "Boot" Boutwell led a class on the winter solstice today, and the group was unfazed by today's snowfall. Boot began with some solstice poetry, science and lore and then led the group around the farm and adjoining woods, and returned to the farm for hot cider around a fire pit.
Its been a few weeks since my last upload to Flickr, 20th April in fact, for the passage of the class 56 route learner, at Holmes Junction and Brightside, see-

when an R.O.G,/Loram class 37 passed through the station, in similar good weather.
On this bright Saturday morning, within a short space of time, around 40 minutes, 2 charters and 2 freights passed through, all going north, 2 freights and a carter on the 'Old Road' at left and one coming off the Hope Valley line via Sheffield and the Midland Main Line, to the right. Operating on a 'round-the-world' day out, at left is a double-header affair with class 66 loco 66028 in its old E.W.S. maroon and yellow livery and right behind, in similar colours, class 67, 67016. They are hauling a rake of mainly Riviera Blue/Grey old British Railway Mk.II carriages, M17105, M3333, M3397, 80042, M3314, M3340, M3278, M1657, M6067, M6054, M6051 & with another class 67, 67013, at the back. This is the 3-part, 'The Powerful Pieman Panorama' Charter operated by U.K. Railtours with D.B.C. as the Train Operating Company. At 07:28 that morning, the set departed London's Ealing Broadway on the 1Z29 working to Toton North Yard, arriving there, around 4 hours later, at 11:38. A brief pause ensued, but not very long, before the the set departed the Yard at 11:58 and headed north towards here, now on the 1Z30 working coming along through the old Masbrough Station site. It is heading now for Nottingham, in the opposite direction in fact and will hence 'curve round' outside Doncaster and head through Belmont Down Yard, the old Doncaster R.M.T. and on along to Bessacar, Gainsborough Lea Road, Thorpe-on-the-Hill, Newark Castle, Fiskerton and finally Nottingham for 15:09. Here at last is a break in the journey, for just over two hours after which the set will continue on south at 17:34 on the 1Z31 working, arriving back at Ealing Broadway at 22:14; quite a day's tour around. On the right, hurrying south along Masbrough's old platform 2 line, towards Sheffield, is the rear of a Cross Country train, this one the 1V58 service from Glasgow Central departing at 07:48, and en-route to Penzance, and should have arrived at 20:53, but the service was cancelled at Plymouth, at 18:46 due, it indicates in the timetable, to- 'This service was cancelled between Plymouth and Penzance due to an issue with the train crew (TH).' I guess there were replacement buses from Plymouth to Penzance; 2 further hours away by train and probably more by coach, another long day for some folk travelling 'Cross Country'...
Whilst I was out for the route learner I thought I'd throw this in.
153304 is today's unit on the Barton branch and is seen arriving at Thornton Abbey station with the late running 2F92 1552 Barton Upon Humber - Cleethorpes sevice.
The time is 1641 (33 late) on Wednesday 22nd April 2014.
Note the crossing with it's protecting signal in the background. This is Barton Lane Crossing and is due to be replaced with an OD crossing as part of the N.E. Lincs resignalling scheme. The crossing keeper can be seen walking out to open the gates after the passage of the train.
Here we see the unit arriving at Thornton Abbey
The line from Ulceby to Barton upon Humber is a real throw back, predominantly wooden sleepers, 60' bull head rail, mechanical signalling and a two hourly service for the bulk of the day.
It is normally the exclusive preserve of a Northern 153 unit ambling backwards and forwards, all stations, from Cleethorpes to Barton upon Humber.
An extra unit does pop up in the morning to provide one extra shuttle for the masses of commuters to Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
It was with some excitement then that I learnt of a Freightliner route learner scheduled to run Monday to Friday this week. Could there be a return for freight from New Holland, something not seen for many years ? No, no such luck. It transpires that the drivers are familiarising themselves with the line in readiness for future engineering works.
Even so, the sight of anything other than a 153 or the very occasional enthusiasts special on this line is of interest so when I saw the light engine from Leeds, Midland Road amble past me during a morning shift at Elsham I decided to spend the afternoon chasing it around the land that time forgot, these are the results.

It wasn't just PSVs that Greater Manchester Transport did tuition with, a small fleet of HGVs were owned as well. These were used to train garage workers to HGV standard that would be required to drive the wrecker should a bus need to be towed in following a breakdown or accident. HGV tuition was also provided privately to add a few more shillings into the coffers. This Ergomatic cabbed AEC, registration VHV871G heads through Oldham. The Ford Cortina following should please a couple of my flickr contacts as well.
