As a cushion is for the hip, what is for the elbow? Well, a little etymological dissection is in order to understand the anatomy of these linguistic parts.

The word cushion is from Latin coxa (hip, thigh), because that’s what a cushion was meant for. As it turned out Romans had an elbow cushion as well, which they called cubital, from Latin cubitus (elbow). That’s where we got the word cubit, the unit of length equal to the length of the forearm.

These body parts have a way of showing up where you’d least expect them. This week we’ll see five words that owe their origins to the body, some obvious, others not.

Today's word is gambit, from Spanish gambito, from Italian gambetto (the act of tripping someone), from gamba (leg). Earliest documented use: 1656.

We are working on a new educational game to teach kids English. In the fishing game the kids have to catch the fish - each fish gives points. However, if they can spell the word pictured in the left upper corner in English by catching the fish with the right letters, they get a bonus. If they reach target they continue to next level.

Students complete a morning 'warm up' exercise in General English.

Usually we say "Without a backward glance", to show that someone is happy to leave and has no sad feelings about it.

But in this case Sam is giving me a backward glance to show me he would much rather I follow him.

Someone had delivered the wrong piece of furniture.

Just as important as the lesson, of course, is the group photo afterwards....

The final word in this week's theme "Words derived from body" is ham-handed, from ham + hand. It’s the same ham (one who overacts), apparently from the minstrel song, “The Hamfat Man”. Earliest documented use: 1918.
