It can be used ironically to mean the exact opposite though.
However, this photo is just a duck. ;-)

I couldn't find a photo of a keyboard that I could use online, without paying $500, so I took this one, it cost me all of 5 minutes.
Why did I need a photo?
So that I could teach the parts of a keyboard.
Anybody got an aspirin?
Happy Halloween!
Split means to divide into two or more parts, especially along a particular line.
A headache is a pain you feel inside your head.
I've got a splitting headache, means I've got a really bad headache.
Of course in this photo this is a joke. I have a knife through my head, and therefore my head is split.

Today's word is Jedburgh justice, after Jedburgh, a town in Scotland, where in the 17th century people were summarily executed. The town lies on the Jed Water river. Earliest documented use: 1698.
Jedburgh justice, also known as Jedwood justice or Jeddart justice, is, in essence: Hang now, ask questions later. The term is coined after Jedburgh, a town near Edinburgh, where under the orders of King James VI of England, people were executed without trial. See also: lynch.

If the writing is on the wall for a person or an organization, it is clear that they will fail or be unable to continue.
However this photo shows our hotel room in Strasbourg where the writing was literally on the wall, which is a bit off the wall. Some people would call it grafitti. I guess it all depends on your perspective and how much you pay for a room.
BTW - "Off the wall" means strange or very different. Isn't English fun!
PS - Can you see my hat?
