Over the past month Renfrew Elementary has been awash in new faces as 15-25 new potential students participated in the school’s Ready Set Learn program aimed at giving them and their parents an intro to elementary school. Ready Set Learn is a yearly process where 3-4 year olds are invited to district schools and given a fun crash course of all that their school has to offer. At Renfrew the program goes for 5-6 sessions. It includes circle time, book sharing as well as science, art and dinosaur digging stations. The program also provides information for parents about programs and other community resources
“This program was an awesome success,” says Hugh Blackman, Principal at Renfrew. “It is also a nice way for our Kindergarten teachers to come in and meet and greet the new families who are going to be joining our school family soon!”

On Saturday, I hosted my Curry Class Two, “Hot & Sour,” to a group of enthusiastic students eager to learn how to make authentic Thai curries and other dishes from natural ingredients, without processed foods or condiments. The class is always lots of fun to teach, as students learn the basics of Thai cooking and sometimes experience fresh Thai herbs and spices for the very first time. From these, they learn how to make the essential Thai curry pastes that are the foundation for Green Curry, Massaman Curry, Garlic Pork, Garlic Chicken and Hot and Sour Spicy tiger Prawn Soup. Deep Fried Bananas and Ice Cream make for a cool ending to a very delicious hot and spicy dinner.
