Circlin' up in life's huddle, Haley was the guy you'd tell, "...and Dennis, you 'go long'." Half the time, he'd surprise you, and get free, and score.
When job lay-offs coincided with the arrival of warm weather, Dennis saw a business opportunity, selling ice cream bars to boaters, using his dinghy as a good humor wagon.
The idea took off--yachties are free-spending on a summer day, when cool treats are at hand. Eventually, Dennis expanded his operation to include a dockside freezer, and then a building to house the freezer, and that evolved into what is now "Island Cafe", at McCuddy's Marina on Hayden Island (though nobody there remembers their "Founder" anymore).
I find myself thinking about Dennis a lot lately. My son Jack just turned 19. He joined us about the same time Dennis left. In fact, if Jack had been a girl, we planned to use "Haley" as a first name.
These days when there's a barbeque or dockside bull session, the "Captain Haley" stories start to flow--except there are fewer and fewer of us who actually knew the guy. Suspicions have been raised, that he's a figment of my overactive imagination, a riverman Pecos Pete or Paul Bunyon.
So, I keep posting shots of my old buddy, the guy we called "the Johnny Appleseed of Sperm." Those of you who have suggested I jot a few of these yarns down, can be assured, if I ever do write a book, this guy would be one of the central characters. And that's why nobody would publish the thing--any decent editor would read a few Haley stories, and declare it "too outrageous to be believed." pissin’ in the wind
I've had these two Jade plants for a long time (at least 2004, maybe longer) but they have always been sickly. Last spring I restarted them in new soil and they are loving it. Here they are showing signs of excess salts being express through the leaves. I'll lay off the fertilizer for the winter.

The Canadian Football League will hold a game at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia,, Raymond Field will host a matchup between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Toronto Argonauts on July 16th .2022.. Current bleacher seating approx 3000 .. They plan an upgrade to temporarily accommodate an extra 7000 fans for the game..

Women's Pro Hockey PWHL - Is gender discrimination shown in CBC's sports programming decisions ? We flew SN-Brussels and I DOnt care if those working currently there want to hear it or not, It is SABENA with another name! the name-cange was just the excuse to lay off 1000o people, me among them.
Wise Sudey, so called because many people believed she had a gift of prophecy, entertained visitors on the porch of her old home. Like many backwoods sibyls, Sudey was gifted at foretelling the obvious and clever at wrapping more complicated entanglements in a web of ambiguity. But people came to her just the same in search of insight regarding the sex of unborn children, affairs of the heart and for the occasional message from the dead. Women consulted Sudey about the fidelity of their husbands and boyfriends. Farmers and watermen who wouldn’t be caught dead near Sudey’s place sent their wives and girlfriends to Sudey to forecast harvest prices and get bearings for fishing.
A small woman of no noticeable bearing, Wise Sudey’s approach was theatrical. She didn’t use a crystal ball or any of the other traditional trappings of her trade. An old lady who witnessed a number of Sudey’s sessions described: “After chatting with you, Sudey’s foot would commence to shaking. Her eyes would roll back. The timbre of her voice would change. Her normal singsong voice would be replaced by a sound that was all nervous and jumpity. When she hit her stride, she’d be going as fast as a steam engine, so fast you could barely keep up, her voice pitching and yawing as she leaned into and out of her rocking chair. Many’s the time I thought Sudey was going to rock herself right off that porch.”
Everyone knew Sudey’s business. And for the most part they left her alone. Every few years the local Baptist minister would convince the sheriff to “set an example” and arrest Sudey for fortune telling. But Sudey would usually end up working out a deal with the sheriff—whose wife was one of her best customers—whereby she would agree to lay off the sessions until tempers cooled.
For every glad tiding, there were sad tidings. Her closest friends think it was the stress of the latter that finally did Sudey in. “She was always saying she didn’t ask to be able to see into the future,” one friend described. “She said it was more like a curse. Some people have the same nightmare all their lives, “ she said. “I get a new one every time I meet a new person with sad prospects in their future.”

Initially there was a shallow lake in front of the building.
The lake/ice rink has been filled in and the Wetterhauschen removed. The since demolished Ernst-Thaelmann Haus lay off to the left. New paths have been created and an ornamental fountain created in the Kurpark.
The pond has also been filled in - denoted by the kink in the footpath around the left middleground.

The original brick building was constructed in the early 1900's and has been a bastion of the Sterling waterfront for over 100 years.It is in remarkably good condition,thanks to the efforts of its owners who slowly built up their core hardware business and never layed off workers in the 100 plus years they owned the company.Increased foreign imports caused National to sell out to Stanley in 2005,who in turn were bought out by Black and Decker in 2009.

A random factory in the 'Henry Ford' industrial sector of Windsor Ontario. The entire city is covered in non-descript factories connected via a railroad system that brings parts from one plant to the next.
It will be interesting to see how the huge number of lay-offs in the automobile sector affect the city.

This bus has only just returned to service following a lengthy lay-off. Initially a Skelmersdale resident following its arrival from London in 2010, it was sent to St Helens for major repair work and remained there following Skem's closure until recently, when it moved to its new home, Bootle. This is despite supposedly being bound for Bootle following Skelmersdale's closure.
It also features a noticeably more rounded destination display box as a result of damage sustained in Tottenham in February 2006.

The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary or United States Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island (often just referred to as Alcatraz or the Rock) was a maximum high-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) off the coast of San Francisco, California, which operated from August 11, 1934, until March 21, 1963.
The main prison building was built in 1910–1912 during its time as a United States Army military prison; Alcatraz had been the site of a citadel since the 1860s. The United States Disciplinary Barracks, Pacific Branch on Alcatraz was acquired by the United States Department of Justice on October 12, 1933, and the island became a prison of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in August 1934 after the buildings were modernized to meet the requirements of a top-notch security prison. Given this high security and the location of Alcatraz in the cold waters and strong currents of San Francisco Bay, the prison operators believed Alcatraz to be escape-proof and America's strongest prison.
Alcatraz was designed to hold prisoners who continuously caused trouble at other federal prisons. One of the world's most notorious and best known prisons over the years, Alcatraz housed some 1,576 of America's most ruthless criminals including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud(the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Bumpy Johnson, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Mickey Cohen, Arthur R. "Doc" Barker, Whitey Bulger, and Alvin "Creepy" Karpis (who served more time at Alcatraz than any other inmate). It also provided housing for the Bureau of Prisons' staff and their families. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts during the 29 years of the prison's existence, the most notable of which were the violent escape attempt of May 1946 known as the "Battle of Alcatraz", and the arguably successful "Escape from Alcatraz" by Frank Morris, John Anglin, and Clarence Anglin in June 1962 in one of the most intricate escapes ever devised. Faced with high maintenance costs and a poor reputation, Alcatraz closed on March 21, 1963.
The three-story cellhouse included the main four blocks of the jail, A-block, B-block, C-block, and D-block, the warden's office, visitation room, the library, and the barber shop. The prison cells typically measured 9 feet (2.7 m) by 5 feet (1.5 m) and 7 feet (2.1 m) high. The cells were primitive and lacked privacy, with a bed, a desk and a washbasin and toilet on the back wall, with few furnishings except a blanket. African-Americans were segregated from the rest in cell designation due to racial abuse being prevalent. D-Block housed the worst inmates and five cells at the end of it were designated as "The Hole", where badly behaving prisoners would be sent for periods of punishment, often brutally so. The dining hall and kitchen lay off the main building in an extended part where both prisoners and staff would eat three meals a day together. The Alcatraz Hospital was above the dining hall.
Corridors of the prison were named after major American streets such as Broadway and Michigan Avenue. Working at the prison was considered a privilege for inmates and many of the better inmates were employed in the Model Industries Building and New Industries Building during the day, actively involved in providing for the military in jobs such as sewing and woodwork and performing various maintenance and laundry chores.
Today the penitentiary is a public museum and one of San Francisco's major tourist attractions, attracting some 1.5 million visitors annually. The former prison is now operated by the National Park Service's Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the badly eroded buildings of the former prison have been subject to restoration works in recent times and maintained

Em 1 de janeiro de 1934, foi re-inaugurada como uma Prisão Federal. Durante seus 29 anos de existência, a prisão alojou alguns dos maiores criminosos norte-americanos. A prisão foi fechada em 21 de março de 1963, menos de um ano após a primeira fuga realizada na prisão. O governo alegou que o complexo foi fechado devido ao seu alto custo de manutenção, e ao fato de que não garantia uma total segurança, em relação às prisões mais modernas. Era mais fácil e mais barato construir uma prisão nova do que melhorar as condições de Alcatraz.
Em 1969, um grupo de nativos norte-americanos criou um movimento que ocupou a ilha, baseando-se num tratado federal de 1868, que permitia que os nativos utilizassem todo o território que o governo não usava ativamente . Após quase dois anos de ocupação, o governo os retirou da ilha.
Durante 29 anos, a prisão de Alcatraz nunca registrou oficialmente fugas bem sucedidas de prisioneiros. Em todas as tentativas, os fugitivos foram mortos ou afogavam-se nas águas da baia de São Francisco. Três fugitivos, Frank Morris, e os irmãos John e Clarence Anglin, desapareceram das sua celas em 11 de Junho de 1962. Somente algumas provas foram encontradas, e elas levam a crer que os prisioneiros morreram, mas, oficialmente, ainda estão listados como desaparecidos e provavelmente afogados. Em 1979 foi feito um filme sobre essa fuga com Clint Eastwood chamado Escape from Alcatraz. A história chegou a ser testada no programa "Mythbusters-Os Caçadores de Mitos" no episódio Fuga de Alcatraz.
Em outubro de 2015 documentário do canal "History" foi divulgado, onde foram apresentadas novas evidências que indicam que os irmãos Anglin não somente sobreviveram, como mantiveram contato com sua família e teriam fugido para o Brasil.

At the end of September, 2014, the bean counters at Disney are laying off some of Epcot's favorite musical acts. Beginning in fiscal 2015, guests will no longer be able to get the dose of patriotism provided by the Spirit of America Fife and Drum Corps. I guess Brazilian tour groups, the darlings of Bob Iger, just don't get American patriotism.

The interactive uses photo series that are programmed into segments that move and follow the bodily movements of the exhibition viewer using a unique camera interface developed for disabled persons called "CameraMouse". Standing before a large wall-mounted monitor with a digicam mounted on top detecting their movements, viewers can stand still to drill into the layers of the work or move around to interact with motion-based routines in the program.
In the section from where this still is captured the "ghosts" with hubcap heads pan left or right to follow the viewer. The remnant rusty auto parts stream out from the central area of the image like rushing stars, also following the motion of the viewer. Meanwhile, the smokey-dusty particle effect is randomly generated and responds to the viewer's position.
The background is a constantly changing grid panel of images of remineralising auto parts. It is these images that tie the work to its location and its reason for being. The McCreadys Creek wetland where the background images were taken is littered with remnants of car bodies dumped there over decades. The mangroves in the area are arguably, still suffering from dieback or, maybe on the way to recovery now that the car dumping has almost ceased. Most of wrecks are now encrusted mounds of hardly recognisable bits that look they may have once been mechanical.
For me the whole process of degeneration, degradation, remineralisation and reclamation of the autos by the wetland is a metaphor for what happens when culture is neglected. This has particular significance in regard to the process of Indigenous reconciliation that is still topical in my country.
I have reused an image series called "The Ghosts of GMH" that I exhibited way back in 1983. Back then I realised that they had stopped putting hubcaps on new cars and the local (Elizabeth, SA) Holden plant was laying off lots of workers. The images had different significance then. Today the auto plant is still operating and still laying people off from time to time.
In this iteration the images of the "ghosts" take on new meaning. I like the way that the wrecks in the yard where I photographed 'portraits' back then are reflected in the chrome.

Great to be back again after two years of a lay off due to the Covid, at Joe Duffy live from Duke Street, just off Grafton Street and meeting a community of people from all parts of Ireland enjoying the best of Fun and banter on the lead into Christmas.

This is the remains of old IBM buildings from the 1950's reduced to scrap metal and gravel for recycling near a large IBM building from 1984 fate unknown after the whole KINGSTON IBM site closed in 1996 laying off or moving over 7000 people and renamed TECH CITY in 1998 with hopes of reusing the buildings but very little business's moved in and out over the years including where I worked for 6 years and now the buildings are slowly coming down.
It's time for lunch after the tribal dance, and this involves a nearly kilometer long walk on a path by the riverside. As I had said earlier, I was subject to special treatment (of the mercenary kind!) as I had been one of the 'grooms' in the wedding. Well, so were most of the other men in our group, but they appeared to single me out, don't know why. I had bought a silk shawl in one of the stalls. An old woman from the next stall grabbed her collection of shawls, and chased me the entire kilometer, waylaying me and blocking my way, and wouldn't lay off until I'd bought one from here as well. I did need to buy another one, but I did not like her persistence, to the extent of indulging in coercion and arm twisting. I was rather pissed, but then calmed down quickly as she was an old lady, and the view ahead of me is indeed divine! Love the rocky river bed forming a background to elegant wooden houses. The stranding of the S.A. Seafarer on July 1, 1966, is all but forgotten,except by the affected few, but it has been referred to as “a tragic milestone” in South African maritime history. It would have been worse but for a handful of men flying Aloutte helicopters who battled against strong winds to lift off the passengers and crew of the stricken vessel.
Originally named Clan Shaw, then Steenbok and finally S.A. Seafarer, the ship was owned by the Safmarine Shipping Co when she arrived off her home port of Cape Town on the evening of June 30, 1966. On board were a crew of 63 and 12 passengers, including a six-month-old baby, Joanne Richardson. The cargo amounted to 7,800 tons and included thousands of bottles of whisky, over 300 different-titled magazines and a lethal consignment of tetra-ethyl-lead.
The weather was bad, the sea rough with a heavy swell running, and there was intermittent rain and a north westerly wind blowing at 30 knots.Port Captain Motson, of Cape Town,decided it would be safer to handle the ship by day and told the master, 32-year-old, Captain James Branch, to remain clear of the harbour and bay until morning. When Capt. Branch received the message the S.A. Seafarer was three to four miles north-west of Robben Island. For about an hour the engines were stopped and the vessel drifted but at approximately 20:30 the master went to the bridge and set a course of 230° with an option to steer 240° if it was found the ship rode more comfortably.
At 22:00 Capt. Branch reviewed the situation and again at midnight he returned to the bridge. By this time the weather had improved and the wind speed was down to 10 knots, with visibility considerably improved. The lighthouses at Green Point, Milnerton and Robben Island were all visible. Although the Port Captain had intended his message to be an instruction Capt Branch regarded it as advisory and decided to enter Table Bay and proceed to an anchorage. The task seemed simple enough and as the ship was equipped with gyro compass, magnetic compass, echo sounding apparatus, direction finder, radar and Decca Navigator, he did not for see any difficulty.
Undoubtedly, there were certain risks involved but Capt. Branch did not deem them dangerous. What he did not know was that a series of small errors had already begun to place the ship in jeopardy. The third officer had found that he could not hold the ship on a course of 230/240° with the ship travelling dead slow and he had altered course to 260°, but he made no mention of the alteration to the master and neither did he inform the second officer when the latter took over the watch at midnight.The third officer also failed to fix the ship’s position satisfactorily before handing over.
When Capt. Branch returned to the bridge at midnight he, without checking the ship’s position, rang down for “Full ahead” and turned the vessel to leeward, prior to setting a course into Table Bay.’ The ship’s head was steadied on a course for Milnerton Light but at this stage Green Point and Milnerton lights were close together and the quarter master could identify neither by its flash.
On assuming watch at midnight the second officer obtained a position by taking two bearings but failed to fix his position by taking a third bearing on Robben Island light. Nor did he lay off,on the chart, the course set by Capt. Branch. Had he done so he would have discovered how perilously close they were to the dangers off Green Point.
The second officer took another bearing at 00:23 and at this time, Capt. Branch stopped engines and checked the ship’s ability to go astern. Four minutes later the second officer took a third fix and entered the ship’s position on the chart. When he had finished he commented that the rocks on the shore were clearly visible when the beam of light from the lighthouse fell upon them. It was about this time that the boatswain uttered a warning of breakers ahead. The master immediately put the ship astern and once clear of the area the position of the ship was again fixed. Satisfied that he was clear of danger, Capt. Branch turned the ship to port and ordered “Slow ahead”. Then, when he was sure that they were heading for deeper water, he rang down for “Half ahead”.
At 00:37 the boatswain once again warned of breakers ahead. The master ordered the ship hard to port but it was too late. There was a sudden lurch and the ship was on the reef, off Green Point.
As the engine-room began to flood the engines were shut down for fear of an explosion and Capt. Branch realised that the ship was in grave danger. Every wave that broke over the SA.Seafarer pushed her further and further onto the reef.
Hurriedly, but calmly, the passengers and crew gathered in the lounge while they awaited instructions from the master. By this time it was obvious that there was no chance of saving the vessel. The first message from the ship was one of urgency: “Please take off passengers and crew as soon as possible”. Rescue operations from the shore were immediately set into motion. The tugs F.T. Bates and C.G. White left Duncan Dock and manoeuvred into position outside the breakers off Green Point in order to render whatever assistance possible.
As time dragged on several attempts were made to rig a breeches buoy but the wind and mountainous seas played havoc with the lines, constantly carrying them away and fouling them in the rocks. It was then decided that this method would be too hazardous and that a helicopter rescue should be attempted at first light. At 04:42, after being subjected to massive seas and waves, the SA.Seafarer broke her back. Rescue operations were now being hampered by lack of adequate light and it was decided to use the beam from Green Point lighthouse. The revolving mechanism was therefore stopped and the beam focused on the S.A. Seafarer.
A helicopter flown by Commandant Tatham was then manoeuvred into position over the stricken vessel in an endeavour to lower a walkie-talkie and thus establish direct communication with the shore; messages were previously being relayed to the rescue crew on the shore via Cape Town Radio. The first attempt was a disaster and the walkie-talkie was smashed but the second attempt was fruitful and direct ship-to-shore communication was established.
Although the forward section of the vessel was steady the stern section rocked violently as each wave struck.By this time those on board had gathered in and around the master’s, cabin as it was feared that the ship’s mast would fall onto the lounge area. Even in this terrible predicament, tea and biscuits were served to the crew and passengers. Helicopter rescue operations started at dawn and at 07:55 the first passenger, Mrs. Louise Waterson, was safely lifted to shore. Shortly after she was joined by her husband. From then on the rescue operation ran smoothly and at 10:15 Capt. Branch was the last person to leave.
For weeks after the stranding wreckage from the SA. Seafarer continued to be washed ashore. Drums of tra-ethyl-lead were feared to have burst as hundreds of dead crayfish and perlemoen were washed ashore but laboratory tests revealed that they had actually been killed by a wood preservative, pentachiorophenol, which had been carried in the ship’s hold.
The subsequent court of inquiry found Capt Branch negligent on three counts:
Setting an unsafe course;
Stopping the vessel and putting the engines astern at a time when she was within two cables of foul ground at Green Point and on a lee shore; and
Not appreciating the seriousness of the situation even at this late stage and not ordering “Full astern” to take the vessel clear of danger.
Capt. Branch’s certificate of competency as master was suspended for two years and the court also reprimanded the second officer for negligence in failing to warn the master of the imprudence of their course before the stranding. During the hearing Capt. Branch told the court that the stranding could have been caused by a shoal extending further seaward than shown on the chart, or by an uncharted pinnacle in the line of his course. In order to remove any doubt a survey was carried out by an underwater “sledge” pulled by a power boat. Nothing was found.
A contract to get rid of the wreck was eventually awarded to a scrap metal firm and today there is no visible evidence of the disaster.

The county had a population of 14,987 in 2009 to about 10,534 Population in 2014 after computer chip manufacturing plant closed more then 800 people lost their jobs . Then High desert plastic plant (the biggest private employer in the county employing 288 people ) layed off 100 people in late 2009 . So that sadly leaves more and more vacate homes and business in the county .
The Federal Reserve is raising interest rates as it strives to deliver on its dual mandate of price stability and maximum sustainable employment. So far, the U.S. labor market has been impressively resilient; unemployment is at 3.7%, the lowest it has been in decades. But in several ways the impact of the pandemic on the labor market persists. Labor force participation is not yet fully back to pre-pandemic levels. While some employers are laying off workers, many others say they are finding it hard to hire. And work-from-home appears to be here to stay for many workers.
On November 30 at 1:30 p.m., Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell spoke at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy on the outlook for the economy, inflation, and the changing labor market. Following his remarks, Powell was interviewed by David Wessel, director of the Hutchins Center, and took questions from the audience.

Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson NJ was built during the Great Depression with grants from the federal government. A large portion of the labor came from layed off mill workers in Paterson NJ.
That federal investment in a construction project gave Paterson a 10,000 seat stadium that was used through the mid-1990s. Now in need a major renovations voters approved a ballot measure in 2009 to restore this historic structure.
