General Motors announces a lay off of 2000 employees in two US plants just one day after the 2016 presidential election. Four years earlier Vice President Joe Biden's "Bin Laden Is Dead and GM Is Alive" statement became the rallying cry for President Obama's 2012 re-election campaign. Weird.
Well, at least Bin Laden is still dead.

Bob was sitting in the outdoor, covered area, of Smokin' Joe's Bar. When in the area (a lot) I always check out this spot – this seat. The light is always good. Bob was relaxed and chatty. He lived in Central Islip, Long Island, for 10 years. As a youngster, I lived about three miles away.
He relocated to Chicago, becoming a carpenter. At age 32 he started his own construction business. Over many years, the firm grew to 500 employees, and during the recent recession, it dwindled to 10. Now it's back to 50. Bob looked pained as he recounted all the good hard working men that he had to lay off. He still owns the business.
The layoffs segued into a discussion about the homeless in Sarasota. He shook his hear recounting how men that lost construction jobs could be on the streets like this. He first got a house in Sarasota in 1989, but used it little. Until six years ago, that is. Then he began living six months in Chicago and six in Sarasota. We passed on the street yesterday and I got a hearty, “Hi, Bob.”
Thank you, namesake, for allowing me to photograph you for the 100 Strangers Flickr group.

man, a journalist isn't supposed to say stuff like that. forgive me. i'ma lay off the nature photos for a while. i'm not sure what came over me... other than i'm new to this area and my eyes explode with its beauty every day.

Stumbled across this box in my desk drawer at work...and after having just stayed up too late to watch the gawd awful movie Timeline my tired brain parsed this as "Killer Fax" rather than Kleer-Fax. You know, like Michael Crichton's wacky idea for dangerous "3-D faxing" technology. I think I need more sleep. And to lay off the bad sci-fi for a while.
p.s. Can you tell I've been rather uninspired (and uninspiring) this week? My apologies.

Well, its one for the money,
Two for the show,
Three to get ready,
Now go, cat, go.
But dont you step on my red patent leather shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my red patent leather shoes.
Well, you can knock me down,
Step in my face,
Slander my name
All over the place.
Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Dont you step on my red patent leather shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my red patent leather shoes.
You can burn my house,
Steal my car,
Drink my liquor
From an old fruitjar.
Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Dont you step on my red patent leather shoes.
You can do anything but lay off of my red patent leather shoes.

Madison tennis courts were far from filled on Wimbledon Sunday. Sure, there were some people playing today -- but in late in the afternoon of a sunny summer day, when the heat of mid-afternoon had started to wane, there was absolutely nobody except a nostalgic photographer on the courts at West High School. There was a time when all of Madison's many public courts would be jammed all summer long, but not now. It's no longer rare to see the melancholy sight of not just one empty court, but many. The popularity of tennis is waning in the U.S., which seems reflected in the nationality of the finalists in the Grand Slam tournaments -- the amazing Williams sisters to the contrary.
I used to play a lot of tennis, and the sight of an empty court still triggers an atavistic reflex to grab it before somebody else takes it. But for my knees' sake, I'm laying off till I lose another 20 of the pounds I gained when I stopped smoking. Meanwhile, I'm contenting myself with tennis on television. Today I was rewarded with one of the greatest matches I've ever seen -- Nadal's epic 5-set, winning Wimbledon men's final battle with Federer, with all the suspense and reversals of fortune anybody could want. It was one of those matches where you really could say both players were winners, even though Nadal won the championship. After the match John McEnroe felt compelled to give Roger Federer an awkward hug, and you could see why he felt that way.
"... The economy seems to be heading to a recession, but how will this affect the internet startup world? ..."
I remember reading somewhere on the Internet that one way to solve problems was to "redefine" them. [0] So try thinking "reasons you should start a startup". I can think of a few straight off.
- the coder pool is going to increase as businesses close or lay off extra staff.
- rents on property are going to be cheaper
- consumers are probably going to tighten the strings and shun payment to services of dubious value
as opportunities, credit dries up, creators are really going to have to re-evaluate "what users want", now. Not pre-crash or recession. now you have to be frugal out of necessity :)
The advantage here is the rules of the game change. And change quickly. Where there is change there is opportunity as yesterdays "new ideas" become mainstream and relegated to the history of technology. Thats one theory. The other is in the hiatus the chance to build new technology and ideas has some breathing room to grow.
I'd also like you to consider the "future effect" of the current boom. A backlash is coming for those working in "safe, secure jobs" where market demand wane. I found this in the Australian press [1] and read as follows:
"... Michael Warrilow, Managing director of IT advisory company Hydrasight, believes today's tight labour market may be creating resentment among employers who have made pool-playing, T-Shirt wearing and all-day-Facebooking a part of the work 2.0 experience ..." [2]
and then continues ...
"... Generation Y will be appeased for as long as we continue with low unenployment... Once employers have more choice, there will be a backlash against their behaviour." [3]
I can think of no better time to start a startup and it gives you a new reason to say to your folks, "At least it's not selling real-estate".

Since I'm going to have to lay off buying Joes for a while, I decided to set up my MARS forces and see how my favourite army looked. This is everything except the Despoiler because I couldn't be bothered to go in the attic to get it.
The army's not finished, though - the DEMON has 3 seats and I only have 2 (rather worn) Ferrets, and I have 3 AGPs but only two Nullifiers. And I use the Con Iron Grenadier as a sergeant/squad leader but I have enough IGs for more than one squad... Beyond that, I'd just lke more of everything!
OK. I look...uh
Hm. Yeah. I need to lay off the booze, and the starch. Let's just say that and be done with it. Oh, and stop skipping tap classes!
OK:
dress - dollar bag sale at a church
tights - DKNY, with feet cut out
chalice necklace, watch pendant necklace from my gramma (not vintage)
zig-zag black and white socks - mom
Fugly Faux Crocs - beauty supply
Buzzcut which is rapidly growing in - me
Cleavage - why weren't you there in my teens when I needed you?
Still from an interactive installation exhibited at the "Pacific Edge, contemporary art from coastal Queensland" exhibition, Artspace Mackay, September - October 2006.
The interactive uses photo series that are programmed into segments that move and follow the bodily movements of the exhibition viewer using a unique camera interface developed for disabled persons called "CameraMouse". Standing before a large wall-mounted monitor with a digicam mounted on top detecting their movements, viewers can stand still to drill into the layers of the work or move around to interact with motion-based routines in the program.
In the section from where this still is captured the "ghosts" with hubcap heads pan left or right to follow the viewer. The remnant rusty auto parts stream out from the central area of the image like rushing stars, also following the motion of the viewer. Meanwhile, the smokey-dusty particle effect is randomly generated and responds to the viewer's position.
The background is a constantly changing grid panel of images of remineralising auto parts. It is these images that tie the work to its location and its reason for being. The McCreadys Creek wetland where the background images were taken is littered with remnants of car bodies dumped there over decades. The mangroves in the area are arguably, still suffering from dieback or, maybe on the way to recovery now that the car dumping has almost ceased. Most of wrecks are now encrusted mounds of hardly recognisable bits that look they may have once been mechanical.
For me the whole process of degeneration, degradation, remineralisation and reclamation of the autos by the wetland is a metaphor for what happens when culture is neglected. This has particular significance in regard to the process of Indigenous reconciliation that is still topical in my country.
I have reused an image series called "The Ghosts of GMH" that I exhibited way back in 1983. Back then I realised that they had stopped putting hubcaps on new cars and the local (Elizabeth, SA) Holden plant was laying off lots of workers. The images had different significance then. Today the auto plant is still operating and still laying people off from time to time.
In this iteration the images of the "ghosts" take on new meaning. I like the way that the wrecks in the yard where I photographed 'portraits' back then are reflected in the chrome.

Bell media, is a proud Canadian Company ? It's Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas Nevada USA. Prior to the big game CTV has been flooding North American airways with ads to promote their full coverage of the upcoming American Superbowl and they will then broadcast 10 straight hours of uninterrupted prime time live T.V. coverage of this prime American sporting event on Superbowl Sunday 2024 ? However, on the other hand, back home in their home country of Canada, they don't broadcast anything at all, nothing (zero) blanco, zilch, silencio, not even 1 minute of CTV coverage of their own 2024 Canadian Grey Cup game for their fellow Canadians to enjoy ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/53523500175/in/datepos...
Feb 2024 - Halifax Nova Scotia,
Bell media and CTV have deafened and blindfolded many East Coast residents after eliminating many critical hours of local and community news programming in the Atlantic region ?
Recent Bell Canada Corporate decisions have now left many Maritimers in a vulnerable position ? East Coast Provinces appear to be the target of severe local live Newstime cancellations and these cut-backs have left many Maritimers without their daily Noon news hour updates that are broadcast everyday all week long ? ATV viewers will now be forced to tune into the other station (CBC) where CBC tends to run mostly world international news along with their select choice of the National News, along with lengthy live news conferences that are put on by the PM and other liberal party members ?
Aside from terminating the popular weekday ATV Noon hour news show, CTV has also downsized in half the very popular and iconic , 'ATV live at five' 5 P.M. local community news program, (prompting long time popular host Jason Baxter to seek early retirement) ? Adding to the devistating loss of this much needed news reporting that is traditionally broadcast every week, Bell will also now terminate all weekend Saturday and Sunday local news reporting currently running on ATV ? The cancellation and elimination of so much allotted local news airtime that is normally given to Atlantic Canadians surely threatens the safety and security of residents especially now that there will be a 24 hour local news blackout for 2 full days each and every weekend and even for as much as 3 consecutive days every holiday long weekend ? And so it seems that arch rival CBC has taken over prime time live local news reporting in the Maritimes and Bell Canada is blaming the Liberal Government's new Bill C-18 for them having to slash so many prime time hours of local and Provincial news coverage in the Maritimes ?

The word Furniture appears on the three sides and the oval topper at one time rotated. Great old neon sign seen in Westminister, California in May of 2006.
Levitz Furniture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Levitz Furniture was a nationwide chain of American furniture stores that helped create the "furniture warehouse" genre of retail furniture sales. It was in business for nearly 100 years before liquidating in bankruptcy in early 2008.
Growth[edit]
The company was founded in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1910 by Richard Levitz.[1]
In the 1960s Levitz successfully pioneered selling moderately priced brand-name furniture from a warehouse-style store.[2] It suffered in the 1990s as consumers began to prefer showroom sales that featured spaces arranged to look like actual rooms in houses.[3] The chain continued to expand in 2005, when they acquired Seaman's Furniture and Huffman Koos stores after bankruptcy.
Marketing
The store is known for the slogan and jingle "You'll love it at Levitz."
Bankruptcy and liquidation
Levitz was accused of having been poorly run for more than a decade starting in the 1990s. It declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice during the period, in 1997 and again in 2005, both times emerging after a corporate restructuring and the participation of new outside backers.[3]
On December 21, 1998, Levitz announced it would close 27 stores and lay off 25% of its workforce. The company downsized its warehouse system from 65 to 17 sites.[4]
The furniture market underwent a prolonged nationwide downturn after the September 11 attacks, and was hurt again in late 2007 by the 2007 subprime mortgage financial crisis.
Levitz filed for bankruptcy the final time in October 2007.[1] As of that time, it was operating nearly 80 stores, mostly in the Northeastern United States and on the West Coast,[6] under the corporation PLVTZ LLC. In October 2008, Levitz Furniture, with bankruptcy court approval, converted its Chapter 11 case to Chapter 7, and started liquidation sales.[7]
The company was sold in bankruptcy to a group of bidders, led by Hilco Merchant Resources,[3] that acted to rapidly liquidate its inventory and close all remaining stores.
Ipswich 2-1 Preston
Ipswich Town chalked up their eighth successive home win and ended a run of four straight losses against a poor Preston side at Portman Road.
The visitors only mustered one effort on target in the whole match - their dubious 85th minute penalty - while Ipswich created a host of chances, hitting the woodwork three times in addition to their two goals.
Early on, it was Preston keeper Andy Lonergan who denied Ipswich by saving shots from Pablo Counago and Jon Walters, plus a firm header by home skipper Jason De Vos.
Preston threatened for the first time with a 35-yard drive from Callum Davidson which flashed wide, before Billy Clarke wasted a great chance for Ipswich, diving to nod wide from Owen Garvan's free-kick when unmarked.
Town were desperately unlucky on 27 minutes when De Vos nodded Garvan's corner goalwards, Counago's back header went onto the bar and Fabian Wilnis headed the rebound against the post.
Wilnis had two mad moments in front of his own goal before half-time, getting his head onto a Kevin Nicholls free-kick which deflected onto the roof of the net and slicing an attempted clearance over keeper Neil Alexander and narrowly wide.
In between though, Town had taken the lead when Walters crossed from the right and Alan Lee dived low to steer a header past Lonergan despite the goalkeeper getting a decent hand on it on 34 minutes.
After the break, Ipswich continued to look the more lively side, with Walters spearheading a break which ended with Lonergan saving his low shot after a quick exchange of passes with Counago.
Preston wasted a great opportunity just before the hour when a series of corners ended with Nicholls' delivery flashing across goal and Karl Hawley steering it wide from very close range.
Town hit the woodwork for the third time on 63 minutes when Clarke collected a loose ball and thrashed a fierce 25-yard left-footer against Lonergan's left-hand post.
Counago flashed a low drive across goal before his lay-off was drilled home by Tommy Miller from ten yards for his first goal since rejoining Ipswich in the summer.
Preston ensured a nervy finale when substitute Neil Mellor went to ground under challenge from David Wright and Alexander, although the forward looked to be on the way down before any contact was made.
Referee Mike Russell gave the penalty though and Mellor sent Alexander the wrong way from the spot.
But Ipswich held on through five minutes of stoppage time and actually looked the more likely side to score.

In 1910 there were only 22 black persons in Waterloo, Iowa. In that year (or 1911 accounts vary) rail workers stuck. In response the railroad recruited as workers in Mississippi (and some say Alabama) without being told that they would be strike breakers. Once in Waterloo these men were housed in box cars and under the protection of company goons and the police worked in the yards and shops until the strike was broken, and the union with it. Here the white accounts, of which mine are oral, state that the strike breakers were fired and the white workers rehired with worse conditions and pay than before. Of that the black accounts which have been published in The Des Moines Register none report a mass lay off of the strike breakers. Photos of rail workers in Waterloo taken in the 1920's show very few black workers.

I don’t know what cause but it was a very costly mistake.. I sent a message to you because I’m at terminals and my bosses frown on public posts ..
Addendum :A video on F B shows a crane placing resting blocks in the Dry Dock at the recently closed Heddle Marine Shipyards . Must be expecting a Ship. Good News for all the layed off workers.

Killer Whales of the west coast of Whalsay, weather conditions were low cloud and mostly calm dry conditions. The Killer Whales (Orcas) were first spotted on the east side of the calf of Linga an Island which is situated of Symbister Harbour. The whales then proceeded into the north west traveling between islands Bruceholm and Hunderholm headed to a bight which lays off mainland Shetland called Bunnydale, here the whales frolicked around breaching and playing swimming upside down etc. Here as you will see in one of the photos the whale also grabbed a tystie for a snack. They then left this location and headed south again around the island of Hunderholm and carried on proceeding south towards nesting and Lerwick area. In the pod there were 2 large Killer Whales and three smaller cubs. The whales travelled at a speed around 6-7 knots into the south.
BNSF Train M GALKCK1 26A drifts down the hill and through the massive and under photographed cut on the BNSF Brookfield Sub. towards Maxwell and a crew change before heading on into Kansas City.
The GALKCK met the circus train at Thiehoff, and then shoved back out to lay off crossings while waiting on the ore train that just went east. When they got close they pulled on ahead into the siding for the second meet. There was a 2 hour work window in between the circus train and the ore train, resulting in penty of dead time to scout these few shots out.
This portion of railroad is the CB&Q Centennial Cutoff, 49 miles of which was opened in October 1952 and cut 22 miles off the old Hannibal & St. Joseph route to Kansas City and once hosted the "Kansas City Zephyr" and the "American Royal Zephyr". This is what is known as "Million Dollar Cut".

No Kidding. These are real Generals and Senior NCOs wearing uniforms that are under serious consideration by U.S. Air Force leaders managers for adoption.
The USAF is laying off hard working war fighters for budget reasons, but they have enough crack-smoking Generals to put on this horrible fashion show.
I've been in the Air Force one way or the other since 1970. Every new class of generals almost without fail changes the uniforms. Every change is always a pathetic imitation of some other service. We've had Army, Navy, Marine and U.S. Airways imitations. Now add Star Fleet to the list of services that can mock us for being their groupies.
This just makes me sick.
