Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.

Laos is a multi-ethnic country with the politically and culturally dominant Lao people making up approximately 60% of the population,
mostly in the lowlands. Mon-Khmer groups, the Hmong, and other indigenous hill tribes, accounting for 40% of the population, live in the foothills and mountains.
Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, best known for her conceptual portraits. Through a number of different series of works, Sherman has raised challenging and important questions about the role and representation of women in society. She is quite notoriously a feminist which is pushed through into her work. She began her career painting but soon became frustrated with how she couldn’t convey her own ideas through the media used "I was meticulously copying other art and then I realized I could just use a camera and put my time into an idea instead." From then on she concentrated on photography.
Her most celebrated collection of work is The Untitled Film Stills series consisting of 69 photographs of herself posing as different women in a series of stereotypical female roles. For example, a librarian, housewife or school girl. She began the work in 1977 when she was 23 years old. Importantly, her work encourages self-reflection. As Sherman argues, “I’m trying to make other people recognize something of themselves rather than me.”
All the photos express Hollywoods mistreatment of women in film noir and b-movies, women always take the second role to man who always have the dominance and power which seems like quite a dated value system now. In the photos it’s showing women IN the roles not trying to break them but on the faces of each ‘victimised’ women it’s always sadness and she is always looking into the distance. Sherman becomes unrecognisable in each photo, not only when comparing two of her photos together but also if i was to pass her on the street i wouldn’t recognise her. So we see these are far from self portraits.
The photo i looked at is still #48 from the series often known as The hitchhiker, in the photo we see a woman wearing a long checked skirt, socks and trainers, with one suitcase by her side standing on a highway looking off into the distance. You can’t really tell how old the women is, from the hair she looks old but by the clothing she looks like a young school girl. Either way she seems to be escaping, trying to hitch hick a ride on what seems to be an empty area. I think the ‘emptiness’ of the shot helps covey her feelings and her insignificance, especially as she standing so solitude, alone compared to the all the space around her. Even identity seems so be lacking, who is this woman? And where could she possibly be going? The fact you can’t see her face creates tension and mystery because you can’t tell what she could be thinking but by body language she seems quite calm and relaxed. I think although it seems like no one’s coming to get her there is a sense of freedom and longing for more. It looks like its been taking at sunset so it’s quite dark which comes across quite sinister. Typically this image is quite different from the rest of the series of film stills because she appears to be breaking a typical female role, it seems she not meant to be where she is and even her cloths aren’t very feminine.
Sherman has addressed her feminist beliefs in an interesting way, not only in this photo but in the whole series. Feminism doesn’t necessarily mean ‘man hating’ as we see with Sherman’s pictures, she never depicts men in a bad way, aesthetically anyway. I do think there is an element and a connotation to men mistreating women and a dominance issue but she’s concentrating more on female empowerment and demonstrating ‘what women should be doing’ rather than creating painfully obvious insults to men for example a photo of a man say hitting a women or telling her what to do. Sherman stated "The work is what it is and hopefully it’s seen as feminist work, or feminist-advised work, but I’m not going to go around espousing theoretical bullshit about feminist stuff." I do think if you’re to ignorant to look beyond the picture and realise how she exploiting female stereotypes, you can naively become attracted to the woman in the photos, defeating the purpose all together but also showing the intolerance of people’s views.
I think the main thing that interests me about Sherman’s work is the story that has been set up, as in the title ‘Untitled Film Stills’ these are meant to be stills from films, so in reality the women in the photo must be moving or about to go somewhere.
The complexity lies behind her use of narrative as well since these film stills are telling us loads in what she is saying about society’s view of the female gender in popular culture. Sherman’s take on narrative in her photos was "The still must tease with the promise of a story the viewer of it itches to be told." I think this is a good way to look at it because i think sometimes the idea of something is more exciting than the reality, by this i mean the mystery of the photo is much more appealing than what could be actually happening.
There is something almost iconic about the image because it seems so epic and thought provoking that it could be seen as quite a pivotal point in the movie if it existed.
She eventually completed the series in 1980. When questioned why she finished the series, she claimed that she ran out of clichés. Still to photographed 69 female clichés depicted from movies is quite a strong statement to make in any case.

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. - Service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center once again led the parade at the 54th Annual Good Old Days, held in Pacific Grove on April 9-10. Monterey County’s largest arts and crafts show, Good Old Days featured over 225 art and food vendors in downtown Pacific Grove, live entertainment, old-fashioned games and contests, as well as the parade. An estimated 30,000 people attend the 2-day event making it Pacific Grove's largest attraction of the year.

Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 13 to 20 feet (6 meters) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Largely preserved under the ash, the excavated city offers a unique snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried and providing an extraordinarily detailed insight into the everyday life of its inhabitants. It was a wealthy town, enjoying many fine public buildings and luxurious private houses with lavish decorations, furnishings and works of art which were the main attractions for the early excavators. Organic remains, including wooden objects and human bodies, were entombed in the ash and decayed away, making natural molds; and excavators used these to make plaster casts, unique and often gruesome figures from the last minutes of the catastrophe. The numerous graffiti carved on the walls and inside rooms provide a wealth of examples of the largely lost Vulgar Latin spoken colloquially, contrasting with the formal language of the classical writers.
Pompeii has a UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors annually.
After many excavation campaigns prior to 1960 that had revealed most of the city but left it in decay, further major excavations were banned and instead they were limited to targeted and necessary areas. In 2018 these led to new discoveries in some previously unexplored areas of the city.

Some of us take safety for granted, some have their safety threatened every day, and still, some feel they are safe until those feelings are shattered by an unanticipated act of violence. While we have a visual language for safety, usually embodying various orange objects and signs, it is our shared interpretation and internalization of these symbols that create the safety we take for granted. Join SPACES for monthly discussions on the right and expectation to safety and how we as a community can work together to expand safety to all as we speak with marginalized groups and youth activists, discuss power dynamics, and focus on how we can change and do better together. According to a 2016 FBI report, hate crimes are on the rise with increasing attacks against Jews, Muslims and LGBT people. Additionally, individuals with mental illness are more likely to face violent victimization. Sharyna C. Cloud has a passion for community enhancement, empowerment and education, evident in her career history. Her legacy includes work in the criminal justice and the social service arena spanning over 27 years. Her successful engagement within the city of Cleveland provided unmatched insight and experience, evolving to her current role as the Executive Director of the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance, an organization that provides prevention and intervention alternatives to the most at risk youth and young adults who are victims and/or perpetrators of gun violence within the city of Cleveland.
Ashley Hartman (Recovery Resources)
Ashley Hartman is the Coordinator of Training and Wellness at Recovery Resources, a community mental health agency in Cleveland. Recovery Resources helps people triumph over mental illness, alcoholism, drug and other addictions. Ashley is proud to be part of this work as an educator, trainer, and advocate.
Jazmin Long (Global Cleveland)
Jazmin oversees all welcoming activities that engage organizations and communities in supporting and engaging Greater Cleveland’s 115+ various ethnic groups in immigrant integration efforts. As the Deputy Director, Jazmin works closely with the President to chart Global Cleveland’s future growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s services. Additionally, she works to establish partnerships that focus on empowering people and neighborhoods through economic development tools.
Phyllis Harris (THe LGBT Center of Cleveland)
A Cleveland native, Phyllis "Seven" Harris has nearly two decades of leadership experience in local nonprofits, includes program management and development, fundraising, and senior-level executive positions. For many years, she also has played a strong role as an advocate in Cleveland’s LGBT community. Previously Ms. Harris worked at Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio, where she oversaw youth engagement programming. She has served as director of education and advocacy with the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, was vice president of programs and interim CEO with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, and capital campaign director at the Cleveland Sight Center. Her involvement with Cleveland nonprofit leadership includes roles on the governing boards of the LGBT Center, SPACES, and Community Shares of Greater Cleveland. Ms. Harris holds a master’s degree in non-profit management from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor of Arts from Baldwin Wallace College. She lives in Shaker Heights and is the proud mother of two children.
John H. Flores (Social Justice Institute at Case Western Reserve University)
John H. Flores is a Professor of Immigration History and the Interim Co-Director of the Social Justice Institute at Case Western Reserve University. He specializes in Mexican American history, and his research examines the history of immigration and citizenship in the United States.
Paul D. Fitzpatrick (Peacemakers Alliance)
Paul D. Fitzpatrick is a Cleveland native and Marine Corp. veteran who spent 18 ½ years in an Ohio prison and has over 20 years in recovery from both alcohol and drug addiction. He is an accomplished motivational Speaker who uses his life experiences to relate to his audiences. Currently he is the Doby Fellow for the Cleveland Peacemakers Alliance where he coordinates youth outreach programming, staff training, and a mentorship program designed to partner 15 - 25 year old Cleveland area at risk youth with Public Safety Personnel. Mr. Fitzpatrick Is an undergraduate at Cleveland State University at the Levine School of Urban Affairs Majoring in Economic Development. He holds Associate level degrees from both Ohio University and The University of Finley in Business Administration and Sociology. Mr. Fitzpatrick Interned at the ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga County under both his mentor Bill Denihan and the late Valeria Harper where he worked specifically on the Fentanyl/Opioid epidemic.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - The quarterly running of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Commander's Cup races was held at the Price Fitness Center Field on Nov. 2. The two-mile run features a men's and women's team representing each military service branch with the best combined times being awarded the coveted Commander's Cup trophy. The Air Force’s winning streak continues as they claimed first place in both the men's and women's division and were presented with the Commander’s Cup.

The Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Ţūlūn (Arabic: مسجد أحمد بن طولون) is located in Cairo, Egypt. It is arguably the oldest mosque in the city surviving in its original form, and is the largest mosque in Cairo in terms of land area.
The mosque was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Ţūlūn, the Abbassid governor of Egypt from 868–884 whose rule was characterized by de facto independence. The historian al-Maqrizi lists the mosque's construction start date as 876 AD[1], and the mosque's original inscription slab identifies the date of completion as 265 AH, or 879 AD.
The mosque was constructed on a small hill called Gebel Yashkur, "The Hill of Thanksgiving." One local legend says that it is here that Noah's Ark came to rest after the Deluge, instead of at Mount Ararat.[2]
The grand ceremonial mosque was intended as the focal point of Ibn Ţūlūn's capital, al-Qatta'i, which served as the center of administration for the Tulunid dynasty. The mosque originally was backed by ibn Ţūlūn's palace, and a door adjacent to the minbar allowed him direct entry to the mosque. Al-Qatta'i was razed in the early 10th century, AD, and the mosque is the only surviving structure. The mosque was constructed in the Samarran style common with Abbassid constructions. The mosque is constructed around a courtyard, with one covered hall on each of the four sides, the largest being on the side of the qibla, or direction to Mecca. The original mosque had its ablution fountain (sabil) in the area between the inner and outer walls. A distinctive sabil with a high drum dome was added in the central courtyard at the end of the thirteenth century by the Sultan Lajīn.

The College of DuPage Language Department and French Club (La Connexion Française), in collaboration with community members from the Alliance Française of DuPage, recently presented "Célébration de la Francophonie" at the College’s Glen Ellyn campus. The multicultural event featured displays on the customs of Francophone countries and treats from French-speaking countries, including Belgium, Congo, Switzerland, France, Haiti and Cameroon. In addition, participants had their “passports” stamped in each location and enjoyed student presentations and international folk dance.

SUMMARY
A manifesto-poem written collectively in cooperation with Ukrainian and Belarusian immigrant communities in Poland. It was composed during a five-days long workshop «MIGRATION OF BODIES AND WORDS» that merged poetry writhing and linocut techniques. It was a part of a large collective exhibition «GOTONG ROYONG. THINGS WE DO TOGETHER», that took place in Warsaw Center for contemporary Arts “Castle Ujazdowski”, curated by Marianna Dobkowska and Krzystof Lukomski.
The workshop served as a place for meetings, discussions and collaborative work. The participants exchanged stories, experiences, poems and reflections related to the situation of immigrants in Poland. Each day the meeting left a mark in the form of poetic phrase, passed on to the participants of the next day meeting to be cut out on a sheet of linoleum. Thus, a record of a common experience and meeting was registered in both textual and sculptural form. At the same time it grew into a manifesto of collective action for and with people who come to Poland from other countries.
It was initiated by artists Iuliia Kosterieva and Yuriy Kruchak, the literary critics Maja Stasko and Michal Kaspzak, as well as the poet and translator Aneta Kaminska.

The heart is the seat of emotions. That’s what people in earlier times believed and that’s how languages have grown to have terms such as sweetheart, cruel-hearted, dishearten, heartbreak, and more.
The heart is an important part, but it takes a whole bunch of parts to make a body run. This week, I have collected words derived from various body parts, both internal and external.
