PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - For the first time in more than a decade, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center opened its doors to the local community for its annual Language Day celebration.
Held May 11, on the open grounds of historic Soldier Field and surrounding classrooms, Language Day was a colorful celebration of foreign languages and cultural education highlighting the 26 different languages taught to military personnel at the Presidio of Monterey.

The College of DuPage Language Department and French Club (La Connexion Française), in collaboration with community members from the Alliance Française of DuPage, recently presented "Célébration de la Francophonie" at the College’s Glen Ellyn campus. The multicultural event featured displays on the customs of Francophone countries and treats from French-speaking countries, including Belgium, Congo, Switzerland, France, Haiti and Cameroon. In addition, participants had their “passports” stamped in each location and enjoyed student presentations and international folk dance.

The event featured a Vietnam War veterans recognition ceremony. Vietnam War lapel pins authorized by Congress were individually presented by POM Garrison Commander Col. Lawrence Brown and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Roberto Marshall to approximately 75 Vietnam War veterans in attendance.

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.
It's actually a macro shot (you might notice the slight barrel distortion). The books were part of a special edition of very small (and colourful) paperbacks.

Urmia (Turkish language: Urmu, Urmiyə, اورمیه; farsi: ارومیه) variously translitterated as Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, is a city in and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 577,307, with 153,570 households.
The city lies at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river (City River). Urmia is the 10th most populated city in Iran. The population is mainly mainly Azerbaijanian Turkish(85-90%), with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.
Urmia is situated on a fertile plain called Urmia Plain, on western side of Lake Urmia; and eastern side of Turkish border and marginal range of mountains.
Urmia is the trade center for a fertile agricultural region where fruit (especially Apple and Grape) and Tobacco are grown. An important town by the 9th cent., Urmia was seized by the Seljuk Turks (1184), and later occupied a number of times by the Ottoman Turks.

Although there is a positive relationship between dogs and human language, a dog has no concept of the "English" language.
However, According to Hungarian scientists who published a groundbreaking study, dogs understand the meaning of words and the intonation with which they are spoken.
Let's say that even if you tell your dog in a very excited tone that he needs to go to the vet, he will probably see right through you and not want to go.
It doesn't matter what the sound is called. You could teach it the Spanish word for "sit," the English term for "turn around," and the Chinese word for "wait."
It doesn't learn multiple languages, and it doesn't know that these words come from different languages.
The dog knows that when the human makes that sound, it should respond with a sound of its own; when it makes a particular sound, its owners praise it with treats and love.

Active Assignment Weekly: Dramatic Lighting
Playing with light. 92 photos, and this is the only one that seemed to work with my little point and shoot. Desk lamp on our table with Bill reading. A little grainy, but I like the way the light falls away. I did clone some light out of his sweatshirt below is left arm. Otherwise, no adjustments.
Two rather jaunty looking soldiers are engaged in chatting to a local girl. They have their hats tipped back and are casually smoking cigarettes. They are both posing slightly. The girl appears to be dressed in her work clothes and is behaving in a coy, embarrassed manner. There is work yard paraphernalia in the background.
Despite the cosy propaganda value of this picture, by the later stages of the war many local women sold themselves or their daughters to soldiers in exchange for food or warmth.

Nothing About Us Without Us Is For Us was a public art event using obsolete technology to hurl language across Glasgow's River Clyde. Organised and conceived by artists TS Beall and Matt Baker, the project commissioned 15 artists to partner with 18 local organisations. Together, they delivered 6 weeks of activities, culminating in an event on Saturday 28 April, 2012 where over 1500 people sang, shouted, and sailed across the Clyde. Visitors to the Glasgow International Festival were invited to the Govan waterfront to participate in transmissions using human megaphones, siege engines, string-and-cup telephones, messages-in-bottles (‘The Govan Armada’), choral serenades, and more…

Reading is very necessary for learning a language well. Only a good reader knows the finer nuances of speaking a language like an art. At Udgam we always recommend fostering reading habit as early as possible, beginning right from Preschool. To further emphasise the need for regular reading, our school celebrated Reading Week from December 1 to 6 in English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Gujarati.
The Primary Section made the most of the week by inculcating activities like answering riddles, extempore speaking from chits drawn, sequencing jumbled stories, rapid fire, spinning the yard, poster making, tongue twisters, writing and reading aloud simple poems, reading newspaper articles and discussing, character description from folk tales and noun games.
In Middle Section activities that were pursued to enhance reading were news reading like a reporter after dividing new into categories like International, National, State, Sports and Weather. Along with sessions of story, book reading penned by famous authors was undertaken. In Hindi, children were encouraged to chant dohas by Kabirdas along with video screening. In Gujarati class, children had to draw lots to read books. Sanskrit reading was made interesting by giving them topics from grammar. The groups took down names and presented their topics on charts, quiz, dumb charade, housie, flash cards and so on.
The senior school children presented book reviews of novels read by them. The students shared with their classmates the highlights of the novels read, the various characters depicted, the ratings the book deserved,etc.While some students used PPTs to present their reviews, others depended on their verbal skills to interact with the others and convey the content of the book read.
In the main action area of reading, the School Library, the students were shown videos of famous stories with morals. There were activities like story writing, paragraph writing, draw-a-picture, writing about your favourite character and Read-a-thon.
A Book Fair was a Grand Finale to the Reading Week. It was attended in large numbers by students, parents and teachers. The children went around excitedly from shelf to shelf and selected books to buy and take home. We hope the spirit of reading will continue in the times to come...

Yesterday, the Japanese dictionary explained about the warning sign you see in a Japan's elavator. Those Japanese symbols are used particularly for letting people to know a door in front of them. So they are normally used where an automatic door is used. Today, on the other hand, the ordinally warning is going to be added into our Japanese dictionary. These Japanese symbols are written in kanji characters and they are called Kei Koku. Next to the Japanese kanji symbols, there is a ! mark in a rectangular. That is also the sign of warning which is quite often used in Japan. Although it is black and white, the symbol is colored in yellow.
The first kanji symbol means warning and the second symbol means to tellin Japanese. By combining individual kanji word, it become the warning sign. This method of writting is called kanji compound.
In Japanese language, the method is used quite often when writting words in Japanese kanji.
So we will these Japanese symbols into our Japanese dictionally.

In honor of 50 successful years of the English Language Fellow Program, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs Marie Royce hosted a celebratory event on November 5th in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the U.S Department of State to honor the program, its participants, and its partners. PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center observed Memorial Day during a ceremony on Soldier Field at the Presidio of Monterey, California, May 26. The annual ceremony consists of a formation of troops in their dress uniforms representing all four service detachments, ceremonial cannon fire and the playing of taps. Retired U.S. Air Force Col. William “Terry” Bare, former assistant commandant at DLIFLC from 2008 to 2011, was guest speaker at the event that honored service members killed in service to our nation.
