Photographs of the South by Baldwin Lee, Walker Evans, and Eudora Welty

Vision, Language, and Influence brings together for the first time the work of three photographers of the American South over a 50-year period. Walker Evans (1903-1976) is represented by incisive images of Alabama sharecroppers stemming from his epic collaboration with James Agee on Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was a Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern writer and photographer who traveled across Mississippi in the 1930s and early 1940s taking photographs and documenting rural and small-town life in her home state. Baldwin Lee (born 1951) is a professor of photography at the University of Tennessee, and a former assistant to Walker Evans. Complementing the 50 or so works by Evans and Welty are more than 30 of Lee’s images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s with the support of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Vision, Language, and Influence was organized by the Knoxville Museum of Art in collaboration with Baldwin Lee.
PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Joint Service Color Guard, along with marching units from the four service branches, once again kicked off Pacific Grove's Good Old Days festival by leading the parade along Pine St. on April 5.
The Annual Good Old Days Celebration and Music Festival started in 1957 and is a two-day event in downtown Pacific Grove with live music, parade, vendors and carnival rides. According to the Monterey Herald, an estimated 40,000 people attended this year.

The students attended the first-ever EducationUSA Grade A Student Fair, hosted by the EducationUSA Cambodia advising center.
"As you follow your dreams, each of you have the responsibility to help Cambodia develop and prosper," Ambassador Heidt said. "We here at the U.S. Embassy are all very proud of each of you and wish you very much success."
The Ambassador was joined by Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport Undersecretary of State H.E. Lav Chhiv Eav, EducationUSA advisor Kolap Mao, Fulbright scholar Sean Viseth, and director of STEM Cambodia Organization Allen Tan.
After the formal program, the students had a chance to talk with representatives from Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative, The U.S. Ambassador's Youth Council, STEM Cambodia, and much more.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - Students, staff and guests of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center honored the military personnel who have given the ultimate sacrifice during a Memorial Day ceremony held at Soldier Field on May 26. A special tribute was given to Sgt. Andrew J. Creighton of Laurel, Delaware who died July 4, 2010 while conducting operations in the Oruzgan Province of Afghanistan. Creighton was a graduate of the Korean Basic Course at DLIFLC and a veteran of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines.

Trzebiatów (German: Treptow an der Rega,) is a town in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland.It has 10200 inhabitants. The lower Rega area around Greifenberg and Treptow was settled by immigrants of German language in the 1250s, and settling reached a peak in the 1280s, but here a native Slavic population participated. At this time Treptow was part of the Duchy of Pomerania, which was a component state within the Holy Roman Empire since 1180. In 1504, Johannes Bugenhagen moved to Treptow and became Rector of the local school. Though he had not studied theology, he was ordained as a priest in Treptow's St. Mary's Collegiate Church in 1509, and served as a vicar at the Kanonikerkolleg of that church thereafter. On December 13, 1534, a Landtag was assembled in town, where the Dukes Barnim XI of Pomerania-Stettin and Philip I of Pomerania-Wolgast as well as the nobility officially introduced Lutheranism to Pomerania, against the vote of Erasmus von Manteuffel, Prince-Bishop of Cammin. In the following month Bugenhagen drafted the new church order (Kirchenordnung), founding the Pomeranian Lutheran church, today's Pomeranian Evangelical Church. As a dowager, Sophia of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1579–1658), widow of Philip II, Duke of Pomerania, lived in Treptow. Sophia's dower was a former nunnery, which she converted into a palace. While in Swedish service and thereafter Duke Francis Henry of Saxe-Lauenburg spent a lot of time with Duchess dowager Sophia in Treptow. Sophia's and Francis Henry's fathers were cousins. On 13 December 1637 Francis Henry and Marie Juliane of Nassau-Siegen (1612–1665) married in Treptow. Their first child was born in Treptow in 1640. Francis Henry also served Sophia as administrator of the estates pertaining to her dower. When in 1637 with Philip II's death the Pomeranian ducal house was extinct, the duchy was under Swedish occupation with the Brandenburgian electors claiming succession in Pomerania. Not until 1648 the electors prevailed in succeeding as dukes of Pomerania, however, only in the central and eastern part of ducal Pomerania (1653–1815), including Treptow.
In 1750 Treptow Palace was refurbished in classicist style for General Frederick Eugene of Württemberg, who resided there – with interruptions – until 1763. With the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Brandenburg-Pomerania, already since 1618 ruled in personal union with Ducal Prussia (Kingdom since 1701), also legally merged into Prussia and the different German confederacies and empires, of which it formed part since. In 1945 central and eastern Pomerania, including Treptow, became part of Poland.

Talitha kum (Ταλιθα κουμ) thalita qum

And taking the hand of the child, he said to her, "Talitha kum", which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, get up".
This verse gives an Aramaic phrase, attributed to Jesus bringing the girl back to life, with a transliteration into Greek, as ταλιθα κουμ.
A few Greek manuscripts (Codex Sinaiticus, Vaticanus) of Mark's Gospel have this form of the text, but others (Codex Alexandrinus, the Majority Text and the Vulgate) write κουμι (koumi) instead. The latter became the Textus Receptus, and is the version that appears in the Authorised Version.
The Aramaic is ţlīthā qūm. The word ţlīthā is the feminine form of the word ţlē, meaning "young".
Qūm is the Aramaic verb 'to rise, stand, get up'. In the feminine singular imperative, it was originally 'qūmī'. However, there is evidence that in speech the final -ī was dropped so that the imperative did not distinguish between masculine and feminine genders. The older manuscripts, therefore, used a Greek spelling that reflected pronunciation, whereas the addition of an 'ι' was perhaps due to a bookish copyist.
In written Aramaic, it could be טליתא קומי or טלתא קומי (read right to left).
Lacan famously said that the unconscious is structured like a language. I have not the foggiest what he meant but he may have meant the way in which, as demonstrated by Asch and Rosenberg, Westerners understand the world, and make evaluations based upon how language understands the world.
The above shows a two dimensional model of personality from Rosenberg 1968, showing that some character traits are considered close to each other in four groupings (1 skilful, industrious, important, practical, trustworthy, honest, serious, decisive, scrupulous, 2 Fun, popular, sociable, warm, good natured, humorous, 3. frivolous, insignificant, untrustworthy, dishonest, not fun, 4. Irritable, Humourless, unpopular, cold, unsociable). These are groupings of the meanings of words, but Westerners tend to make evaluations based upon such groupings. Hence, as demonstrated by Asch (1946), if someone is described as being A.intelligent skilful industrious warm determined practical cautious, as opposed to B. intelligent skilful industrious cold determined practical cautious with only the central warm changed to cold - then they are far more likely to be judged to be good natured with the ratio of people judging them to be so dropping from 94% to 17%.
Doing this in Japan however, we find that people are far less likely to change their opinion based on the change of only one adjective. Peng and Nisbett (1999) analysed for instance evaluations of contradictory Yiddhish proverbs (which are common in both China and Japan) and found that Chinese are far more likely to positively evaluate contradictory proverbs. Peng and Nisbett, call this tendency of Asians not to require that evaluations conform to the dictionary dialectical thinking. In my own view it is rather more just that Chinese and Japanese are far less likely to be thinking in language (as demonstrated by Kim) and are probably imagining the situation. If you do imagine the situation then the platitudes that Westerners are fond of such as "cold people are not good natured" "Warm people are good natured" do not always play out. If you imagine people you know, you will find there are people who are cold in the presentation of their emotions, but who are also good natured in their acts.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California -- The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center celebrated the upcoming Memorial Day with a ceremony on Presidio’s Soldier Field May 25. The ceremony included a solemn invocation by the Chaplain, a 21-gun salute rendered to fallen service members, firing of the ceremonial cannon, performances by the DLIFLC Joint Service Student Choir, and three names added to the plaque in honor of DLIFLC graduates killed in action during the Vietnam War. Guest speaker for the event was City of Salinas Mayor Joe Gunter, who is also a Marine Corps veteran.
Following the ceremony, the Presidio Garrison hosted a special reception event for Gold Star Families who were in attendance.
