Rivers were the lifeblood of early human settlements and it’s not surprising that we have been getting inspiration from them ever since.

Bertrand Russell once said, “An individual human existence should be like a river: small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.”

Civilization started along rivers. Rivers are also derivers* of this week’s words. The five words we feature are based on the names of rivers around the world. We’ll start in Turkey, take a scamandering path through Scotland, Australia, the US, and end up back in Turkey.

*To derive is to, literally, flow from; from Latin de- (from) + rivus (stream). Rivus also gave us rival (literally, one who uses the same stream), but not river, which is from Latin ripa (bank, shore).

Today's word is Pactolian, after Pactolus (now called Sart Çayı), a river in ancient Lydia (in modern Turkey), known for its golden sands. Earliest documented use: 1586.

According to the legend, King Midas bathed in the river Pactolus to get rid of his golden touch, really a golden curse. Midas’s story has given us such terms as Midas touch and Midas-eared. It was this golden sand that supposedly made Croesus rich.

Learn more at: wordsmith.org/words/pactolian.html

Today's word is golden parachute, from the idea of a parachute softening the blow of an ejection from a high office and the color golden alluding to the large payment received on dismissal. Earliest documented use: 1981.

JOKE:

A hedge-fund CEO negotiated the best compensation package he could. A private jumbo jet, a yacht, and so on. Also, a huge payout if he were to leave the company for any reason. Once he was flying on a trip when the pilot announced, "Folks, both engines have failed. We are going down. Please pray."

The man asked his assistant to look for his parachute in his carry-on. "Good luck," she said as she handed him his golden parachute.

Ever metaphor? You do meet them every day, whenever you speak, read, or write. A language is a giant shoebox of metaphors. This box has lead balloons, loose cannons, dirty linen, and more. Help yourself to whatever you like. Yes, you can even cherry-pick.

Some language metaphors are obvious, but many others aren’t. Did you know that a muscle is, literally speaking, a little mouse? That’s because someone thought the movement of a muscle, such as the biceps, resembled a mouse scurrying around.

This week we’ll feature words that are often used metaphorically.

MIXED METAPHOR CONTEST:

Usually, I’d not recommend mixing metaphors, but with a special arrangement with the language directorate we have secured a literary license to share with you. Go ahead, mix things up! It’s valid for a limited time only, so go nuts!

What mixed metaphors can you come up with using one or more words featured this week? The mixier the better!

HOW TO ENTER:

1. Share them below or email us at words@wordsmith.org.

2. Include your location (city, state).

3. Send them by Fri.

Original entries only, not something you read elsewhere.

PRIZES:

Selected entries will receive a signed copy of any of my books or a copy of the game Word Up!

To get you started, here’s a mixed metaphor I came up with:

“You used papier-mache to create this village?” Prince Grigory chewed out his underlings. “Why not something sturdier like cardboard?”

Let a thousand mixed metaphors breed and spread the light!

Today's word is papier-mache, from French paper-mâché (chewed paper). Earliest documented use: 1753.

Learn more about today's word at: wordsmith.org/words/papier-mache.html

Today's word is Pinkerton, after Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884), a private detective, who started a detective agency in 1850. Earliest documented use: 1874. Pinkerton may also be the origin of the term fink.

Learn more about today's word at: wordsmith.org/words/pinkerton.html

Today's word is locavore, coined by Jessica Prentice (b. 1968), chef and author. From local, from Latin locus (place) + -vore (eating), from vorare (to devour). Earliest documented use: 2005.

Learn more at: wordsmith.org/words/locavore.html

Today's word is Kentish fire, from the prolonged derisive cheering in opposition to meetings held in Kent, England, during 1828-29 regarding the Catholic Relief Bill which sought to remove discrimination against Catholics. Earliest documented use: 1834.

----

Yesterday we went with some students to the German Currywurst Museum! There, we split into two teams and played a game which consisted of finding the answers to many questions about Currywurst in the museum. Did you know that they also eat Currywurst in many other parts of the world? We also got the chance to smell different spices that you can add on them and play a computer game where you had to make Currywurst as quickly as possible. Ah! And we got to try a little bit of Currywurst too! 😛

I once came across a fellow named Modern Man. Real story. That was his official name. That's how he was listed on his driver's license and passport. If was probably a bit of a challenge to have customer support or 911 not hang up.

You have to admire the boldness and courage it takes to officially rename oneself like this. The rest of us carry on with whatever name our parents slapped on us when we were born. Here's to rebels and nonconformists!

This week we'll see five words that have origins in popular names. We'll cover first names, diminutive names, last names, and full names.

Is there a story behind your name? Do you have an unusual name? Share on our website or email us at words@wordsmith.org. As always, include your location (city, state).

Here are some tidbits about my name wordsmith.org/anu/anu-name.html

Today's word is John Henry.

This is the second of four sets of flash cards to help students with verb forms. The cards are unique in that they are two-sided. One side of the simple (base form) verb cards give simple definitions of some of the verb meanings on the other side, while the matching past tense verb cards have illustrations on the reverse side.

The teacher resource idea book (shown) comes with the 72 flash cards. The book offers a variety of suggestions, including ideas for teaching and learning verb form phrasing in context.

JOKE:

This man was too busy golfing to pray. So he held his Bible upside down and tweeted to God.

"God, can you make everything around me pyrite. Who would know?"

"I would, and at least 81 million people would*, but whatever. I'd grant you the wish if you promise never to bring My holy name on your lips again."

"Deal!"

And God answered his prayers too.**

Today's word is ritz, after César Ritz (1850-1918), a Swiss hotelier. Earliest documented use: 1900.

NOTES: César Ritz was known for his opulent hotels and was called “the hotelier of kings and the king of hoteliers”. The word ritz is often used in the phrase “to put on the ritz” meaning to “make an ostentatious show”.

Today's word is Grand Guignol, from Le Grand Guignol (literally, The Great Puppet), a theater in Paris that specialized in such entertainment. Earliest documented use: 1905.

Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol started in 1897 in a former chapel in Paris. Its specialty was gruesome and gore. A typical evening featured a series of short plays. It’s said that the theater measured the success of a play by how many in the audience fainted. As a marketing gimmick, the theater management hired doctors to be in attendance. The theater closed its doors in 1962. Charles Nonon, its director at the time, said: “We could never compete with Buchenwald. Before the war, everyone believed that what happened on stage was purely imaginary; now we know that these things -- and worse -- are possible.”
