Phonics Bingo: Pronunciation Spelling Board Games - Intermediate Level
Who doesn't love bingo? Now use this familiar favorite to help reinforce phonics and help improve spelling and pronunciation effortlessly. These entertaining activities work because the provide immediate feedback - motivating players to understand and then properly pronounce contrasting words.
The intermediate level game is designed for intermediate reading and vocabulary learning students. The games teach simple vowel contrasts, complex vowel contrasts, initial consonant contrasts, and final consonant contrasts. There are 8 different games with ten bingo cards per game plus a deck of caller cards for each game. At this level, there are 25 pictures and vocabulary words per card.
The comprehensive instruction booklet included with the games provides directions on how to prepare for the activity, rules of both bingo and lotto, suggested additional activities, and a summary of basic pronunciation and phonics patters for teacher reference.

What does a surgeon have in common with a palmer (also known as a pilgrim)? In Medieval Europe, a pilgrim brought back a palm branch as a token of their pilgrimage and hence was known as a palmer. A palm tree is called so because of the resemblance of the shape of its frond to the palm of a hand.

No need for a GPS. As any New Yorker would tell you, the way to Carnegie Hall is: Practice, practice, practice!
It’s one of the most prestigious performance venues in the world. It’s a place where not only is Tchaikovsky’s music performed, but also one where Tchaikovsky himself performed. (He conducted his own Festival Coronation March in the inaugural concert in 1891.)
Carnegie Hall has now become a synonym for success. This week we’ll visit five other buildings and venues that have words coined after them. We’ll make stops in a hall, a theater, a museum, a prison, and a factory. And our itinerary will take us from the US to France to England, back to France, and to the US.

ETYMOLOGY:
The word hen has been used for a woman or a girl for a long time (1555). So has the verb peck for nagging (1641). Earliest documented use for the verb henpeck: 1677.
NOTES:
The word is often used in reference to a wife nagging her husband. A henpecked husband is one considered subservient to his wife and a chickenpecked parent is one nagged, harassed, or bullied by a child.

Phonics Bingo: Pronunciation Spelling Board Games - Advanced Level
Who doesn't love bingo? Older kids and adults definitely do. Now use this familiar favorite to help reinforce phonics and help improve spelling and pronunciation effortlessly. These entertaining activities work because the provide immediate feedback - motivating players to understand and then properly pronounce contrasting words.
The advanced level game is designed for reading and vocabulary learning students. The games teach simple vowel contrasts, complex vowel contrasts, initial consonant contrasts, and final consonant contrasts. There are 8 different games with ten bingo cards per game plus a deck of caller cards for each game. At this level, there are no pictures. There are 36 words per page providing a rich mixture to contrast all the spellings of the relevant sounds, including the exceptions.

I have been diving in the dictionary for decades, but this ocean of words is so immense I get pleasantly surprised from time to time. A few weeks ago someone shared the word misericord. I was able to get a faint idea of what it might mean, but I was not prepared for all of its facets.
You mean there’s a word in the English language for a place that may be, basically, a monks’ frat house? This word also means a dagger. And you can also use it for a hinged seat. Yes, yes, and yes. There’s such a word, and there is an unexpected common theme in all these senses of the word, as you’ll see below.
A language is a reflection of its speakers. It expands to fill a need. If they need a word for a bachelor pad to chill out, away from the prying eyes of the abbot, who is the language to get in the way? Do your thing, it says, I’m here to make you happy. Feel free to twist me, make me play another role, whatever. No morality police here.
This week we’ll share with you five words that may make you say: I didn’t know there was a word for it. Use them any way you like. A language is an ABC (abbacy?) with no humorless enforcers taking all the joy out of it.
Today's word is misericord, from Old French misericorde, from Latin misericordia (pity or mercy), from misereri (to pity) + cor (heart). Ultimately from the Indo-European root kerd- (heart), which also gave us cardiac, cordial, courage, concord, cordate, accord, discord, record, and recreant. Earliest documented use: 1230.
NOTES:
If you were to summarize misericord in plain words, it would be a mercy, a mercy seat, a mercy room, and a mercy weapon. A misericord was built under a church seat for worshipers to support their bottoms when standing (a small projection from the underside of a hinged seat that can be used for support when the seat is turned up). Since a misericord under a seat was usually out of sight, it was an inviting proposition for the woodcarver to depict something naughty, subversive, or forbidden. [See examples on our website]. The fact that a misericord supported the undersides of a person during long homilies probably inspired many a scene of mooning.
A misericord in a monastery, on the other hand, was not just a seat, but a whole room or an apartment where rules were relaxed. One could eat what was forbidden in the regular refectory. Another word for a refectory is frater and the misericord was called flesh-frater. So it was a frat house, in a manner of speaking. A flesh-frater? See the usage example below.
Finally, misericord as a mercy weapon delivered the death stroke (also known as the mercy stroke or coup de grâce) to hasten the death of a mortally wounded person.

If languages were food, English would be a loaf of bread, Spanish a fine dish of fresh veggies, French a dessert, ... and Yiddish a spicy pickle. Add it to any meal to bring that tang. Add it to any conversation to give it a nice pungent flavor.

This week we share with you five words from Yiddish that are now a part of the English language. Yes, we have featured chutzpah and mensch and schmooze in the past. It’s time to share words that you may not have heard of.
Yiddish (literally, Jewish) is a language without a country (Israel’s official languages are Hebrew and Arabic). It started out as the language of the Ashkenazi Jews (from Germany). The language has German as its base, includes a generous sprinkling of words from Hebrew and other languages, and is written in an alphabet based on Hebrew.
Like any language, Yiddish serves its speakers in whatever they wish to express, however they wish to communicate. When I call it spicy pickle, it’s only in the context of Yiddish vocabulary that’s now a part of the English language.

These are examples of blend words, coined by fusing two or more words. Such a word is also known as a portmanteau.

In addition to providing our main island as a free resource, we now have a second island which can be used for special language or culture related events such as presentations, workshops, seminars, roundtables, conferences, demos, concerts and parties!
Our new "Paradise Island" can be used free of charge by anyone who needs a private or public space for a large event (maximum 20 avatars). We gladly provide additional support and resources on an as needed basis. We can also modify the look and feel of the island to help create the ideal atmosphere for your event.

🌿🐾 Volunteering Adventure in Guatemala 🇬🇹🌍
Hey friends and family! 🌺 We're thrilled to share some exciting news with you all. The Hu family is embarking on an incredible journey to beautiful Guatemala, specifically in the captivating city of Quetzaltenango, commonly known as Xela. 🌎🌿
For the next two weeks, we'll be immersing ourselves in two passions that are very close to our hearts: nature conservation and language learning. 🌿❤️
First and foremost, we'll be dedicating our time and energy to volunteering at an animal rescue center. 🐾🐥 We'll have the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of various animals, learn about their habitats, and assist in their rehabilitation. Our family strongly believes in the importance of protecting our environment and all the wonderful creatures that call it home. By participating in this initiative, we hope to inspire others to adopt more environmentally friendly practices and become passionate nature lovers themselves. 🌱🌍
In addition to our volunteering activities, we're also taking the chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture by attending Spanish lessons. 💃🎒 Being able to communicate with the locals and connect with them on a deeper level is something we value greatly. Learning their language will not only enhance our experience but also create meaningful connections with the community. 🌟
We're incredibly excited about this opportunity, and we'll make sure to document our journey through pictures and stories. Make sure to follow our updates here on Facebook, as we'll be sharing our adventures, encounters with amazing wildlife, and the progress we make with our Spanish lessons. ✨

True? Only women, or men as well? The popular notion about women and shoes may or may not be true, but shoes have helped them majorly, more than once.
Cinderella’s glass slippers reunited her with her beau. Dorothy’s silver shoes flew her around. No wonder many love shoes, some a little more than others.
Some even have an obsession with the shoe, but here we are more interested in their place in the language. This week we’ll look at five terms related to shoes that also have developed figurative meanings.
