Right after the entry to the Chinese Garden in Portland. Note the great paving, stones put in 'vertically' in patterns resembling the doors. This paving 'grid' constantly shifts in your perspective as you move to make lines or squares or sort of random patterns.

"The Bathing Woman"

With an area of 58 hectares, Skaryszewski Park is one of the largest parks in Warsaw. The park was designed in the English style by Franciszek Szanior and realised in the years 1906-1922. The author of the bronze figure created in 1928 was the sculptor Olga Niewska.

LUC was responsible for public realm and landscape design for 500 bed student housing development in the Partick area of Glasgow’s West End. LUC deployed a clear hierarchy to the design proposals creating a series of interconnecting primary and secondary spaces. The primary spaces deployed a distinctive paving pattern that was inspired by the rich textures of wheatfields, a nod to the area’s bread mill heritage.

Two Running Violet V Forms by Robert Irwin in the Eucalyptus Grove at the University of California, San Diego.

Irwin's work since 1970 has been situational art, responding to the scenario with light and phenomenon. Here in this grove, Irwin creates a datum with chain link fence and stainless steel poles. The grid interacts with the grove planting and the chain link changes in your perception througout the day, and by the angle and side which you're viewing the sculpture.

In this photo you can really see the blue color in the fence, and it appears quite solid on the right, less so on the left, enhancing a sensation of depth.

Eagle Rock, California. A Grey Water Garden with supplemental rain water capture system with cistern

An imaginative twentieth century re-creation of a renaissance castle garden. The moated Chateau dates from c1536 and had a formal garden in the eighteenth century. The present garden dates from the years after 1906 when it was bought by a Spaniard, Dr Joachim Carvallo. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, he wished the garden to have a sixteenth century character. Great horticultural skill was deployed, especially in the use of vegetables. An arbour of grape vines leads to a great parterre, conceived as a Garden of Music. On the other side of the canal is a Garden of Love. Symbolising the moods of love, it looks rectangular from the chateau but is actually trapezoid. The aesthetically designed vegetable garden is based on an illustration from Du Cerceau's Les plus excellents bastiments de France (1576). Despite its origins, Villandry is the work of a twentieth century imagination.
