This series of pictures were taken in two gardens, both of which are filled with inspiration and sheer joy. The owners use their own gardens to raise monies for charity.

Bergamo - piazza Vecchia

The Japanese and Chinese gardens are collectively known as the Jurong Gardens. They opened in 1974.

Bridge of Double Beauty, connecting the Chinese Garden with the Japanese Garden.

A combination of bamboo, ficus, ginger, dracaena, begonia, yucca and bougainvillea being misted in the warm afternoon sun. This scene is on the western edge of my studio shade garden. The view continues to evolve over the years.

This is one of my image captured during last weekend’slandscape workshop. And yes there is some lens flare however I think it adds a bit of drama and texture to the image. "kulkul"s or Balinese bell-towers are normally found at temples. Although the one pictured here is of a traditional design, it sits as part of the landscape architecture of a new resort in Ubud - the Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton reserve. (architects: PT. One of the joys of visiting Bali is to explore its various new resorts and hotels which often represent the cutting edge of tropical architectural design and landscaping. (for example, one of the very first infinity or knife-edge resort swimming pools in the world was designed for the Amandari in Ubud). Here, we see the swimming pool and rice terraces which form the central landscaping feature at the Mandapa resort, also in Ubud, which is barely a year-old. The rice plants are cultivated to show different stages in their growth, hence the different colours. There is even a little traditional rice barn structure, seen on the left.

That's what I feel when I visit the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden. I originally went to see the sculptures, but I fell in love with the garden they're displayed in. It's 10 acres of wonderful landscaped woodland and ponds, designed and built up over the last 30 years by Landscape Designer Anthony Paul. It's a magical place.

Rikugien Garden, located in Tokyo, is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese landscape design from the Edo period. This serene image captures the garden's enchanting beauty, showcasing meticulously pruned trees and a serene pond. The pine trees, their trunks wrapped in traditional straw mats known as "komomaki," demonstrate the garden's dedication to preserving historical horticultural practices. The lush greenery surrounding the pond mirrors the tranquil waters, creating a picturesque scene that invites visitors to pause and appreciate nature's artistry. The garden's winding paths, stone bridges, and charming teahouse offer a journey through time, where each step reveals a new perspective on the harmonious blend of natural and man-made elements. Rikugien, meaning "Six Poems Garden," was created in the early 18th century by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu under the orders of the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It is renowned for its scenic beauty, featuring landscapes inspired by waka poems. Each area of the garden represents a stanza, creating a poetic and immersive experience. The garden is particularly stunning in autumn when the foliage transforms into a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and yellow, attracting photographers and nature lovers alike. The seasonal changes add a dynamic aspect to the garden, making each visit unique. Rikugien Garden is not just a historical treasure but also a cultural haven where visitors can enjoy a cup of matcha in the teahouse while soaking in the serene surroundings. The garden's meticulous design and maintenance reflect the Japanese cultural emphasis on balance, tranquility, and respect for nature.

Japanese Tea Garden

Central Park, San Mateo, California

The Japanese Tea Garden was designed by Nagao Sakurai and was installed in 1966. The park itself was developed after a 1922 bond measure to purchase the estate of the Kohl family.
