The Wanhua Zhen, Old Summer Palace, Beijing, China.
The Wanhua Zhen (traditional Chinese: 萬花陣; simplified Chinese: 万花阵; pinyin: wàn huā zhèn; literally "10,000-flower maze"), or Huanghuazhen (traditional Chinese: 黃花陣; simplified Chinese: 黄花阵; pinyin: huánghuāzhèn; literally "yellow-flower maze") is a maze formed of 1.2 meter-high embossed-brick walls covering an area of 89 by 59 meters. The total length of the walls is 16 kilometers. In its center sits a European-style circular pavilion. The emperor is said to have sat in this pavilion to watch his concubines competing in a race with yellow lanterns through the labyrinth on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Our second annual Summer Reading Soiree celebrated the love of both reading and art. The evening featured Christina Baker Kline, New York Times bestselling author of “The Orphan Train,” who discussed and signed copies of her latest novel, “A Piece of the World.” The book is a fictionalized memoir of the woman in the famed Andrew Wyeth painting “Christina’s World.”
Attendees had a chance to stroll the exhibits at the Arts Council while enjoying sparkling beverages provided by Cool Vines, delicious appetizers from Princeton Soup and Sandwich Co., delightful desserts from Ritzy Bakes, fresh fruit from Tico's Eatery and handmade sorbet from the bent spoon. The first 50 attendees received a limited edition wooden bookmark and all who attended were able enter a raffle to win some great prizes donated by local merchants.
The event was held at the Paul Robeson Center and co-sponsored by the library, Labyrinth Books and The Arts Council of Princeton.
Originally launched in collaboration with the Manresa Art Gallery in St. Ignatius Church in 2013, The Nomadic Labyrinth is an interactive public art project that integrates drawing and architecture to create a walkable path to explore urban meditation.
For the design of The Nomadic Labyrinth, de la Calzada was interested in the juxtaposition of two different cultural patterns – creating a movable, meditative environment where carpet from archetypical western places like the Ritz Carlton meet an inventive Arabesque floral pattern.
The Nomadic Labyrinth reflects the artist’s vision of creating art that is playfully in dialogue with urban space as well as spirituality, daily life and ritual.
Visitors are invited to explore, walk or meditate in the labyrinth in order to experience art as a transformational tool.
The hedge labyrinth was a bit of a disappointment. From a distance it looks great and seems like a brilliant place to walk. But ... the path is narrow, and if the hedges aren't well trimmed, you get scratched up with every step.

Taken at 1933 Shanghai Slaughterhouse. It looks like a labyrinth because human ways and cows’ ones are complicatedly crossed.

Just completed, on the Bluffton University campus. Jackie is in the distance choosing the spot from which to take an Instagram. The path seems to imagine that prayer is a simple journey, indeed, that it is simply a line — no forks, no branches, no choices, no way to get lost — which we twist up into a pretty shape to disguise the fact that it lacks possibilities.
For about 10 years, the indoor labyrinth (there's also one outdoors on the close) was a carpet intended to be temporary. In the summer of 2007, it was removed and a permanent, stone labyrinth was installed. This is the carpet version, seen from the gallery.

B1 Labyrinths (Part of My Fierce Festival)
Needless Allies
A guided tour of the city centre where actors
mingle with crowds and audiences find dramas
in neglected alleyways.
One city. Six performers. Countless characters.
Multiple directions. All beginning whilst
travelling on a bicycle, ‘B1 Labyrinths’ is a
guided performance tour round Birmingham city
centre. Familiar places will be made unfamiliar,
landmarks turned inside out, forgotten places
will be brought centre stage. Somewhere in the
thronging city streets are actors, but will you be
able to spot them as they mingle with crowds and
find drama in neglected alleyways?
