The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short) is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. A breed characteristic is webbed paws for swimming, useful for the breed's original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog by registered ownership in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States (since 1991). It is also one of the most popular assistance dog breeds in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. Typically, Labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, are good with young children, elderly, and for protection.

Il Labrador Retriever è una razza canina originaria dell'isola di Terranova, facente parte del gruppo dei Retriever, allevata e selezionata a partire dal XIX secolo.Cane di stazza media, di buon temperamento, intelligente, socievole, docile e robusto, eccellente nuotatore (anche grazie alla "palmatura" delle zampe), in origine è stato utilizzato soprattutto dai cacciatori come cane da riporto.La sua indole buona e il carattere facile all'apprendimento lo rendono adatto ad essere addestrato allo svolgimento di moltissime attività, dall'assistenza ai non vedenti, al soccorso in acqua, alla ricerca di persone. Grazie al suo carattere estremamente docile ed affettuoso è un ottimo cane da compagnia, particolarmente adatto a vivere in una famiglia dove ci siano anche dei bambini. È un cane molto esuberante, sempre pronto al gioco e all'avventura, e sempre felice di apprendere e fare nuove conoscenze.
