Pacific Biological Laboratories operated as a biological supply company specializing in preserved specimens and prepared microscope slides, many derived from marine and aquatic species. The laboratory provided materials to schools, museums, and research institutions, and was housed in a building located on what is now Cannery Row, overlooking Monterey Bay in Monterey, California.
The building, its enterprise, and its proprietors were immortalized by John Steinbeck in Cannery Row, where it appeared as the “Western Biological Laboratory.” One of the novel’s central figures, inspired by co-founder Ed Ricketts, pays homage to Ricketts’s influence on both the scientific and literary history of the region. Following a 1936 fire, Steinbeck became financially involved in the laboratory, acquiring half of its stock.
The laboratory complex comprises the industrial facility built by Edison in 1887 to research and develop his inventions. The complex includes more than a dozen buildings that supported Edison's research into electricity, photography, motion pictures, chemistry, metallurgy, chemistry and other disciplines. A private library was attached to the main laboratory building. Specialty heavy and precision machine shops made tooling and prototypes.
Bement,Miles & Company
Frederick B. Miles worked for Bement & Dougherty and then left in 1870 to establish another machine tool maker, Ferris & Miles, which in about 1880 was acquired by James Dougherty, who renamed it to the Machine Tool Works. Both before and after the name change, Miles make a series of improvements to the steam hammer. In 1885 the Machine Tool Works consolidated with William Bement & Son, forming Bement, Miles & Co. This consolidated business manufactured lathes, planers, shapers, slotters, milling machines, and steam hammers. The machine you are looking at is a planer.
Now a quiet museum, it would have been a hellhole to work there by today's standards. A noisy vibrating wood frame building with belts spinning from the ceiling, and machine oil everywhere.

Astronauts with severe radiation sickness are treated in the DRL on Mars. Advanced medicine can now repair the human body cell by cell, although the therapy can take up to several years to complete. Typically the patient is kept in near-frozen state for the duration. Here we can see the incubator cell is extruded for a treatment session, after which the cell is withdrawn inside the machine.
