Platforms and yards used to be littered with discarded or lost wagon labels. Heres a 1974 vintage one found at Temple Meads when "Rail Express Parcels" was a major parcels force. Vehicle M31042 was a Derby built wooden bodied ex LMS bogie brake built in 1940 and withdrawn in 1978..
Commercial-grade tapewriter. Takes only 1/2" tape, including metal tapes. Built like a tank, and looks it. Much more ergonomic than consumer labelers.

I have always been a big fan of wine label design. :::loves wine tasting too::: I've been studying wine labels more than normal due to my work on Odonatia's winery, Dark Palms. I have come to the conclusion recently though that I would really like to get into the industry as a label designer someday. These are some of the ones I found really interesting because of shape, color or overall composition...

an unopened case of 5 Sony "Color" MiniDiscs with completed compilation discs & spare labels, and not forgetting my MZ-RH10 portable Hi-MD recorder. The above caption is in honor of the Squeeze song of the same title.
Working with designers leads to some beautifully crafted work getting on our presses. So when Steve and Chris from United Creatives asked us to print these Whisky labels for their client Artisan Scotch Whisky makers Compass Box Whisky Company, we knew we were getting involved in something exciting.
The labels were letterpress printed on our vintage presses in one colour onto a beautiful uncoated label stock. The labels also required a die cut shape which we decided to 'kiss-cut'. This means cutting the shape out of the top sheet of the paper enabling the label to be peeled off the backing sheet in one piece ready to be applied to the bottles.
Book label of W.H. Smith & Son, London, England. 18 x 13 mm (Found in: Hare, Augustus J.C. North-Western France. London, Allen, 1895).
I picked these up here and there, but most of them were in a big plastic bag at Goodwill for $4.99. Turns out, I don't really have that many things that need a label.
In addition to the usual colors, there are three pastel tapes, one maroon, several orange and one wood-grain! Also two of the orange tapes are skinny 1/4" called "General Brand Label Tape" Never heard of that.
The loose tapes in the left corner are 1/2" and fit the commercial Dymo Tapewriters such as my M-22.
UPDATE: After looking around the house and garage, it turns out that there is an infinite number of things to put labels on.
Created this bottle label for a customer and used my own photography. Would love to hear what you think of the result.
I collected a bunch of plant labels from he garden this weekend to clean, erase and reuse.
Helpful garden tip 1: use a pencil for your labels, they don't fade away and they can be erased with an eraser.
Helpful garden tip 2: Keep track of the plants history by writing the dates that seeds were planted, seedlings transplanted, first harvest, etc. (see top right)
