مهندسی پزشکی ترکیبی از شاخه های مهندسی ، علوم پایه ، علوم پزشکی و زیست شناسی است که به تشخیص و درمان بیماری ها و همچنین جایگزینی اندام های آسیب دیده می پردازد. دوره کارشناسی مهندسی پزشکی برای بار اول در سال 72 در دانشگاه علوم پزشکی شهیدبهشتی و دانشگاه آزاد تهران جنوب دایر شد و در سال 74 اولین دانشجوی این رشته در دانشگاه صنعتی امیرکبیر پذیرفته شده و در حال حاضر دانشگاه های دیگری از جمله دانشگاه سهند تبریز ، دانشگاه اصفهان ، دانشگاه شاهد و دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی واحد علوم و تحقیقات این رشته را ارائه می دهند.
مهندسی پزشکی ، پلی ارتباطی میان پزشکی و مهندسی است و به بیان دیگر ، کاربرد مهندسی در تجهیزات پزشکی می باشد که روز به روز در حال توسعه و پیشرفت است به طوری که دانشمندان امروزه در تلاشند که به کمک علم مهندسی پزشکی اعضای مصنوعی مثل چشم مصنوعی ، گوش مصنوعی ، پا مصنوعی و ... بسازند.
