Our Daily Challenge: Parking Garage

9/365

This is an 1998 model of General Motor's Pontiac Firebird TransAm. A few years ago, my husband Greg put it up on a lift in the garage to rebuild the engine and transmission and to replace other things like the exhaust system, etc. It took a long time to research for the project and to receive the special order parts so it was a very long, drawn out process. He is so happy to finally have it back on the road after all the blood, sweat and tears. It had over 200,000 miles on it originally and the previous Corvette LS1 engine it came with is now custom upgraded to LS6, which for any non-gear head folks out there, this translates to: wicked fast. It's more power than I think anyone needs but ya know, boys will be boys! :) This paint "Sport Gold Metallic" is the original stock color and they only offered it in 1998 so it's not often you see it on the road. Besides, GM discontinued the TransAm in 2002 due to an oversaturated sports car market, although not many of this particular model/year version were made. Because its unique looking, it tends to turn heads as he drives by. I just hope he's not blasting the sounds of ABBA with the windows down as he does it :O

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Chevelle

The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile that was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1978 model years. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Body styles included coupes, sedans, convertibles, and station wagons. The "Super Sport" versions were produced through the 1973 model year, and Lagunas from 1973 through 1976.

n 1970, sheet metal revisions gave the bodies a more coke bottle styling, and interiors were also redesigned. The 1970 Chevelle and the 1970 Buick Skylark share the same roofline. The 1970 Chevelle came in Sport Coupe, Sport Sedan, convertible, four-door sedan, a couple of wagons, and coupé utility (the El Camino) body styles. Only three of these (Malibu sport coupe, Malibu convertible, and El Camino pickup) were available with a choice of one of two SS options; RPO Z25 with the SS 396 (402 cid) engine and RPO Z15 with the new 454 cid engine. The base model was now simply called Chevelle in lieu of the former base 300 Deluxe, and was only available as a Sport Coupe or four-door sedan. In Canada, the base series retained its 300 Deluxe name, with appropriate badging on each front fender just behind the front wheel well. The 300 Deluxe 2-door sedan was canceled and replaced by the base Chevelle Sport Coupe, a 2 door pillarless hardtop. The hardtop, convertible, and sedan received the upgraded sheet metal but the station wagons and El Camino retained the previous year's sheet metal panels (which went on for the next 2 model years). Station wagons were the entry-level Nomad, the Chevelle level Greenbrier, the Malibu level Concours, and an upscale Concours Estate. New options included power door locks and a stalk-mounted wiper control. Production was expanded to the GM Arlington Assembly plant in Arlington, Texas (where the Chevelle was assembled with its corporate siblings in this case the Oldsmobile Cutlass).

Engine choices ranged from the standard 155 horsepower (116 kW) six-cylinder and 200-horsepower 307-cubic-inch V8, to a pair of 350 V8s and a pair of 402 engines. RPO Z25 SS equipment option included one of these 402 cid engines but was still marketed as a 396. The second 402 cid engine was available under RPO, rated at 330 hp with single exhaust, and was available in any V8 series except an SS optioned Malibu or El Camino. 1970 also saw the introduction of the 454 cid engine and was only available with the RPO Z15 SS Equipment option. The base 454 cu in (7.4 L) engine was rated at 360 bhp (365 PS; 268 kW), which was also available with cowl induction; and the optional LS6 version equipped with a single 4-barrel 800 CFM Holley carburetor produced 450 bhp (456 PS; 336 kW) at 5600 rpm and 500 lb⋅ft (678 N⋅m) at 3600 rpm of torque.

The SS 396 Chevelle included a 350 horsepower (260 kW) Turbo-Jet 396 V8, special suspension, "power dome" hood, black-accented grille, resilient rear-bumper insert, and wide-oval tires on sport wheels. Though a 375 horsepower (280 kW) cowl induction version was available, few were sold in favor of the newly introduced 454 engine during late-1969 timeframe. The LS5 454-cubic-inch V8 produced 360 horsepower (270 kW) in standard form and a cowl induction version was also available. The LS6 produced a claimed 450 gross HP in solid-lifter, high-compression guise.

"You can make our tough one even tougher," the brochure explained, by adding Cowl Induction to either the SS 396 or the SS 454. Step on the gas, and a scoop opened "to shoot an extra breath of cool air into the engine air intake....like second wind to a distance runner." Neither functional hood lock pins nor hood and deck stripes were standard with either SS option, but were part of the optional ZL2 cowl induction hood option. The 454 cu in (7.4 L) LS5 V8 was rated at 360 hp (270 kW).

The LM racer was announced at the 1993 Earls Court Racing Car Show and marked a return to Le Mans. To homologate the car Marcos were required to build a number of road cars similar to the racers and the LM400, LM500 and LM600 are the fruits of that. Most road going LM.s were sold with wood copings and Wilton carpet and Connolly leather rather than the stark racing cars. The LM400 and 500 were essentially the same apart from different versions of the Rover V8, 3.9 and 5.0ltr. engine

From 1999 Marcos racing efforts were taken over by Dutch based Eurotech and the LM600 was developed into the LM600 Evo with an entirely new tubular chassis around a mid mounted Chevy LS6, and a light yet very strong driveline featuring an aluminum torque tube, transaxle and Hewland 6 speed transmission.

Introduced in 1968 and continuing through to 1982 the Corvette C3 was designed under Corvette chief designer Zora Arkus-Duntov. Patterned after The Mako Shark II, a 1964 mid-engined project by Larry Shinoda.

1973 began the transformation from muscle car to a touring sports car. The car had sound deadening radial tyres and new body mounts. The chrome rear bumper was carried over from previous years, but the chrome front bumper was dropped to conform with the federal required 5mph standard lightweight bumper system with an inner transverse tube, the urethane bumper system added around 35 pounds weight. Two 350cu small block engines were available, the base L48 at 190bhp and the L82 as the high performance option with 250bhp.

The big block (7400cc) option produced 425bhp with the LS6 engingine in standard trim in 1970 by 1972 this had been reduced to 254bhp from the standard LS5. Though this is probably not the output in this race car

This car competed at Silverstone in the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Race

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 (ExactDetail)

Car week in Monterey. First of the Pacific Grove cars shows.971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 convertible is a true Super Sport that presents in outstanding condition. There were few external changes to the 1971 Chevelle Super Sport, most notably the across-the-board change to single 7-inch headlights with signal lights set into the fenders, and a change from rectangular tail lights to dual round units set into the rear bumper. SS models adopted the Camaro Z28’s Argent painted 5-spoke stamped steel wheels with bright trim rings and center caps, which were available with either Goodyear or Firestone raised white-letter tires. To satisfy new unleaded fuel requirements, Chevrolet dropped the potent LS6 454/450 HP engine, but the LS5 returned with 365 HP—a 5 HP increase—and a very respectable torque rating of 465 lb-ft. In other words, the 1971 Chevelle SS454 was still in the running for the title of “King of the Muscle Cars,” and it was still one of the handsomest of the breed, as this first-rate example shows. Featured in the January 2011 issue of “Auto Enthusiast Magazine,” the highly-optioned car’s spotless engine bay is home to a well-detailed matching-numbers LS5 454/365 HP big-block fed by functional ZL2 cowl induction and teamed with a 400 Turbo automatic transmission. F41 heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, specific gauges and tachometer and SS badging were still part of the Super Sport package.

OTT36 was new to Western National in 1953 and remained with them until 1969. She then passed through the hands of several owners, but according to bristolsu.co.uk there was a gap in the record around 1973. I believe this image shows her around 1974 in a dealer's yard in Barnsley. From reference to this image and another that I possess I think that she might have been in service with GEC as a staff bus. There is a roundel just to the rear of the passenger door with contains what looks like the GEC script logo, although might be GBC. In the other shot I have there are no obvious 'legals' on the passenger side, although the front panel damage is the same. (an-1617f)
