Storming through Burrs, West Country Class ‘City of Wells’ on the Santa Special run during the build up to Christmas 2017
Drew was in the right place at the right time. These locos are over 30 years old - and run into the ground by the previous operator.
locomotive Garratt NG130 pulling a train out of Harbour station, Porthmadog, Gwynedd heading out on the 25 mile run to Caernarfon.
#130 was built by Beyer Peacock for South African Railways to their 2-6-2+2-6-2T NGG16 Garratt design. #130 arrived on the WHR in 2015. It has been restored for use on the WHR by the works at Dinas. The restoration was funded by the locomotive's owners. The rebuild included a new boiler built by Northern Steam Engineering Limited of Stockton.

Delivered from ALCo in 1938, The Milwaukee Road F7 Hudson's were in my opinion, the most beautiful steam locomotives to grace the high iron. I personally never had seen one, but stories from my father and others brought the magnificent Hudson to life in my mind. Here in a summer of 1944 scene, engine 102 screams across the C&NW at Mayfair crossing, bound for Chicago Union Station.

British Railways Standard Class 4 tank No. 80072, a guest locomotive at the Severn Valley Railway’s Spring Steam Gala, thunders into Bewdley with two maroon Mk.1 coaches during a Matt Fielding charter on 22nd March 2018.
This loco ran on the SVR from January 1963. Although not an accurate re-creation of the loco and stock, it is rare the Valley has a loco that is still in steam today visiting the line that it ran on during steam days.
80072 is in the last few years of its boiler certificate after returning to steam in 2009.

A slow moving thunderstorm dumping heavy rain and hail trundles northeast in the background as a BNSF empty sand train rolls through the siding at Broomfield, Colorado where they will wait to go into Denver on May 18, 2018.
The interconnected mesas that make up the Waterpocket Fold at Capitol Reef National Park light up a beautiful red at sunset, April, 2023. The one on the right reminded me of a locomotive, hence the title of this photo with my thanks to Ian Anderson.
This old locomotive is stationed at the Northwest Railway Museum based at Snoqualmie Railroad Depot. Built in 1926 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Restored in 1974, operated until 1990. Was cosmetically restored in 2005.
In preservation, the locomotive has also worn the identities of a number of its scrapped classmates, including first of the A4 class 2509 Silver Link and most recently as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand as seen in this image taken on the line running through St Neots on its way from London to Edinburgh.

In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath
Runs the all time loser
Headlong to his death
Oh, he feels the pistons screaming
Steam breaking on his brow
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way, it could slow down
He sees his children jumpin' off
At stations one by one
His woman and his best friend
In bed and having fun
So he's crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees
Old Charlie stole the handle
And the train, it won't stop going
No way, it could slow down
"Locomotive Breath" was released on Jethro Tull's 1971 album Aqualung in 1971. Songwriters: Ian Anderson. For non-commercial use only.
