"The three lava flows visible from this point are from the southwest rift of Mauna Loa. The darker or younger lava flow surrounding this point is from the 1907 eruption and the lighter colored lava down slope is believed to be 750-1,500 years old. The dark flow east of this location is from an 1887 eruption. These three flows are all the 'a'a (rough or clinker) and not pahoehoe (smooth or ropy) lava. The older lava flows are lighter in color and generally have larger 'ohi'a lehua trees.
If you look closely you will find few 'ohi'a lehua trees growing in the 1907 flow"

Mauna Loa may be the highest mountain in the world (if you count undersea elevation), and is probably the world's largest volcano and supermassive by any standards... but it has the profile of a pancake and is a bitch to photograph. So I thought I'd show the mountain, with a demonstration of what it can do. So here's a tiny fraction of the supermassive volcano, and one of its lava flows at its feet.

This is an old picture that I actually just remember I had from a trip I took in 2006. This was just an interesting looking house in the country of Loas and I took this picture because it reminded me of the types of landscapes my dad watercolor paints so I took it to show him...and I don't think it ever got that far.
