My five cherry tomato plants are all coming on strong. Learning a lot from one of my Flickr friends. Normally, I only grow two, but this year I'm pulling out all the stobs and growing some real food! Little bit of everything!

Can't wait till my wax beans get going, they are coming up from the ground right now!

How do you like my all cedar raised planting box!

A friend of mine who is a knowledgeable rose grower brought me some roses to practice my lighting on, and this Livin' Easy variety is one of them.

I used simple even lighting on the flower by placing a Yongnuo flash in a 24 inch soft box on either side of the flower pointed at the center. The strobes and my tripod mounted camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF603N.

Other pictures of roses that I've taken can be seen in my creatively titled Roses album.

I've photographed a lot of plants and flowers, because they're all around us, work cheap, and never complain. I have an album of these images with over 1200 pictures, and for each one, I have described how I lit them, in case you're interested in that kind of thing.

One week after its latest episode of lava fountaining, the New Southeast Crater at the summit of Mount Etna is waking up again. Since daybreak on 16 February, small emissions of dark gray ash are occurring every few minutes, barely clearing the crater rim due to strong wind, and then drifting east. This photograph was taken at 07:15 h GMT on 16 February 2012, from my home in the village of Trecastagni on the southeast flank of Etna.

Didn't we see the same thing happen before the 9 February 2012 lava fountain? Well, yes, we did. Ash emissions virtually identical to those of today started on 27 January 2012, and continued for nearly two weeks before the paroxysm. At night these emissions were seen to be the result of small Strombolian explosions. If weather conditions permit, all eyes will be focused on Etna today after nightfall to see whether there is any incandescence - and I wouldn't be surprised if there were.

On the edge of Makaiwa Bay near Mauna Lani, there is a lone Heliotrope tree. The tree clings to the a small strip of sand, with the gentle waves of the Pacific on one side and the lush green foliage of Beach Naupaka on the other. As the sun set off camera, the sky turned into a brilliant canvas of pinks, purples, and orange. The sunsets on this side of the island are particularly spectacular due to the volcanic haze, or "vog", that arises from the active volcanoes on the windward side of the island.

Day in and day out, this this tree has watched the sun set over the ocean. I can only begin to imagine the brilliant displays of light and color that it has seen over the years.

This capture is intended to display a "Vintage Look" at RV life in the 50's.

A visit to Hespeler Mill Pond to check out shore birds yielded a mixed bag of birds: lots of Sandpipers, a couple of dozen Great Blue Herons & Great Egrets plus a bonus pair of Sandhill Cranes. This was the closest I've observed these birds on the ground/in water and they provided interesting viewing for half an hour.
