When Amtrak started and PC was allowed to discontinue the daytime westbound #53, the only time we could see any passenger action across the Pennsy in daytime was if the Broadway Limited was later enough to show up after sunrise. Such was the case on this sunny day in April 1978 when the Broadway was late enough to get some sun on the curves descending Big Run Hill between Orrville and Wooster near Geyers Chapel Rd.

While the man attraction of the Raton pass line is the semaphores, another disappearing element of the railroad fabric that lingers on Raton is the code line. Some code lines remain, but the number of conductors and supporting crossarms have dwindled since this view of the eastbound Southwest Limited at Levy, New Mexico.
This is the end of the road called "Top of the World Expedition Route", and parking is clearly limited. This guy is celebrating with a beer, his front wheels parked 2 feet from the edge on a ledge that overhangs a drop that could not be survived by vehicle or man, not even if he was wearing a seat belt.
SO!! I'd write more but i'm running behind terribly on Hair Fair deadlines.

A period of warm temperatures caused ice melt on the small clearing. Assesses yesterday with warm temperatures as much as 8 yesterday. Today -1 temperatures and intermittent snow storm.

We spent a lot of weekend time railfanning together back in those years and I couldn\'t remember why I wouldn\'t also have that shot. Then I remembered that I was on a second section of 49 that day coming home from New Year\'s Eve in Times Square. One friend lived in Syracuse and we took an Empire Service train to there and then the conductor on 49 wouldn\'t let me board the first section that the station agent had told me to do (no room). I didn\'t know there was a second section at the time but they had kept the Boston section separate in Albany and ran it behind the late first section all the way to Chicago. There were no seats on the second section either but I rode in the closed lounge. In Cleveland I jumped off first and quickly drove across the river to the closed-for-winter Ore Dock tower for this shot of the train departing. Ore Dock tower was several stories tall with an open frame that had an exposed staircase. It was always closed in winter and the only challenge to use the stair case was not being called in by the Drawbridge tower operator. The wasteland behind the train is now the very nice county-maintained Wendy Park

I just drove out of the fog. This is looking up the road from where I came. Low clouds and fog, I didn’t see to much. Descended out of the clouds as the road when down toward and the coast and the village of Ponta Delgada on the Island of Flores in the Azores
The tardy-as-usual westbound Lakeshore Limited dims its lights for a meet with an eastbound NS intermodal train, passing the old tri-light signals in South Bend.
