After the mobile crane, I figured I'd try a slightly more "Technic" oriented model - the LEGO Technic 4x4 Crawler (model 9398).
At this point in the build, the kit is actually 100% functional. The motors are remote-controlled (IR), and everything's connected.
However, it's a bit sparse, so you get some "trimming" in the kit to make the car look nice. After the wheel "wells", we get to build the canopy. Literally, it's not so much a body as just a canopy. This section doesn't really use all that many pieces, and gets hinge-attached to the chassis.
I don't like how the kit is black/orange at the front but white at the back, so I might buy the while pieces as black pieces at some point. I also changed the front section a little, because the base model doesn't have a bonnet. The "engine" wings are fixed, which is really silly. So I changed it so that the bonnet can be lifted, and sits a little off the lights, level with the ground. It's just that little bit nicer.
This is one of my most complex models – Feller-Buncher. This type of construction equipment feel trees and stack them for easy removing. The scale is approximately 1:15, model is based on John Deere 900 series Feller-Bunchers with leveling system. Dimensions (max/min): 85(71) x 23 x 64(32) cm, total weight – 5870 g, ground clearance – 3.5 cm.

After the mobile crane, I figured I'd try a slightly more "Technic" oriented model - the LEGO Technic 4x4 Crawler (model 9398).
Here's how I changed the bonnet - it can lift, and has a crossbar for stability underneath, which also acts as a riser.
This just looks much nicer, although the nose can be improved a little with a connector (3m) and a bushel.
Maybe even a tackle block. But that will come later =)
This short wheelbase version is the second chassis for the U437 project. All the hardpoints are the same as the long wheelbase.
