Following Led Zeppelin's short tour of Europe, Robert was finally convinced to undertake a tour of the US. Rehearsals were scheduled for late September, 1980, at Jimmy's home. On 24th September John Bonham left his home to head south to Jimmy's. He asked his driver to stop for breakfast along the way. Breakfast consisted of a ham roll and 4 quadruple vodkas. He continued to drink heavily throughout the day and was eventually put to bed, upstairs at Jimmy's, later that night. During the night John Bonham rolled onto his back, vomited and died of asphyxiation. He was found the next day when John Paul Jones went to wake him up so they could start rehearsing.

Bonzo had struggled with alcoholism throughout his career. He had also been heavily involved in cocaine and heroin but, at this time, was clean. It was only alcohol that he couldn't control.

John Bonham was the greatest rock drummer to ever pick up a pair of sticks. He wasn't there just to keep time. He had enormous power but, if you watch him, he never flailed away like a lot of drummers. The power was all in his wrists and forearms. His timing could never be faulted, even when he was totally wasted he could still play in top form.

John Bonham was the backbone of Led Zeppelin. Someone, I can't remember who or where, described him as the band's rhythm guitar - and I agree with that. His rapport with John Paul Jones created one of the world's great rhythm sections. Jimmy would usually stand in front of the drums and take his cues from Bonzo's playing.

He was the best.

Physical Graffiti. Side 1, Track 3. In My Time Of Dying.

Studio version. Get in quick before it disappears! Another old blues standard turned into something magnificent. An awesome display of drumming from John Bonham. Just brilliant. Jimmy plays slide on the Danelectro the whole way through. I love this track!

Often played live but all the decent live clips have disappeared. This one is from Earl's Court 1975 but the sound is a bit murky. No visuals.

And part two.

but no words are coming out!

Led Zeppelin II. Side 1, Track 2.

What Is And What Should Never Be.

I remember hearing this on a proper stereo system for the first time. The guitar switching from speaker to speaker towards the end of the song - just blew me away. All very ho-hum now, of course, but back then it was a revelation.

Studio version. Lovely slide solo.

Live version, from 1970 I think. Quite true to the album version - for a change.

....as in Led Zeppelin. I had bought the album Led Zeppelin III on LP several weeks after it’s release (my first Led Zeppelin album). On my 3rd visit to the states in 1976 my cousin showed me his 45 RPM single of the Immigrant Song, on the B-side was a song I had never heard titled, Hey Hey What Can I Do, printed under the title was “From Atlantic LP 19128, Led Zeppelin III”, but this song was not on mine, or any other LP, and I never found out why. But I did run out and purchase this record the next day, and it is the last 45 record I ever purchased.

Sitting on the floor is the 10 CD boxed set released in 1993 of all the Led Zeppelin studio releases, including Hey Hey What Can I Do, and 3 other bonus tracks.

He could't decide what type of moustache to grow, toothbrush, zapata, a Tom Selleck. Then when I suggested classic English Victorian gentleman he just went for it. What a distinguished little robot.

After a short stay in Switzerland, Jimmy and Robert (with families) took off for the Greek island of Rhodes.

On August 3rd Jimmy flew to Sicily to visit Crowley's Abbey of Thelema. The plan was to meet up with the others in Paris where rehearsals for the forthcoming US tour would begin.

On August 4th, 1975, Robert, his wife Maureen (who was driving), Carmen, Karac and Scarlet were all in one car travelling back from Greece. The car skidded off the road, over a precipice and into a tree.

Charlotte, in another car with others, was able to call for help and the injured were taken to a local hospital in the back of a farmer's truck.

Maureen suffered a fractured skull, broken pelvis and leg. Karac broke a leg, Carmen broke a wrist. Scarlet escaped with only cuts and bruises.

Robert broke his elbow, shattered his right ankle and broke his right leg in several places.

There was only one doctor in the local hospital and Robert was forced to endure sharing a room with a drunk who insisted on singing Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" to him.

The Zeppelin machine immediately swung in to action and the injured were soon whisked out of Greece and flown to London.

The most bizarre thing then happened. A Swan Song accountant insisted the plane carrying the injured stay in the air over London for an extra hour or so - to make sure Robert lessened his time in the UK for tax reasons!!

Maureen was in hospital for several weeks before being deemed well enough to leave. Robert had a cast from toes to hip and it wasn't certain whether he would ever walk properly again. Once he could be moved, he was installed on the island of Jersey, outside the British tax zone, where he waited for Maureen to recover.
