Photodiodes arranged in a (10X10) grid read the light output from the LCD, then directly output to each LED on the sign. There are no electronics, other than LEDs, Photodiodes and lots of wiring.

I finally remembered to bring a D-SUB 9-pin connector from home to connect the sign to an ordinary PC (instead of the BS2), and a little while later I had the sign mounted to the ceiling, connected to a computer placed in a strategic location and displaying live sales data from the website. (shown here displaying todays date since any other data probably wouldn't be a very good idea to post publicly :)
The computer runs FreeBSD and also just happens to be the local development server for the shop-system. The statue on top of the computer is there to guard it and keep the data safe.
