A side road leads off from the rest area at Julesburg and parallels Interstate 76 for a while, leading past this hill where a couple of old chimneys stand. According to a sign along the road, those chimneys are what's left of the homestead of Uberto Gibello, an Italian immigrant who homesteaded this spot in 1887. He built convoluted shack of a split-level house here that flowed with the hill's contour and spent the next 23 years digging a bunch of tunnels, looking for water. The tunnels are advertised on various signs as Gibello's Caves, and the signs seem to suggest you can explore them. But the sign here says this is private property, and you can't go over there.
According to the signs, before Gibello came along, this spot was along a popular route for pioneer wagon trains. The hil presented a significant challenge for the wagon drivers, the sign says, and I have to think that whoever wrote the sign has never been 200 miles west of here. You can sort of see the incline the wagons followed. There are supposedly visible wagon ruts over there.

a poor shot of the heavily delayed 6C77 0750 barmouth to bescot up engineers sidings. despite departing barmouth 20 minutes early, 20 minutes up the line at tywyn it passed 18 minutes late and only got worse. by here, it was slowling for the approach into wolverhampton and was running 111 minutes late. my camera hadnt focused after playing up, hence the poor shot of this double headed on the long welded rail train
Italian Chef Paolo Taricco leads a cooking demonstration for Austin Community College Culinary Arts students on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2025, in the Demonstration Kitchen at Highland Campus. Taricco, an instructor at Alba Accademia Alberghiera in Italy, is visiting as part of a partnership between the two programs, which includes a study abroad opportunity for ACC students in Italy.
Dylan and I shared a two-person kayak. You can imagine who was more skilled at kayaking. (Hint: it's not the 5'5" person.)

This is a large square block that was probably two houses originally but is now divided into four premises. The exterior dates from the C18 but part, if not all, the interior is older. Three storeys. The west front has six windows and one dummy window. Red brick and grey headers alternately. Stringcourse of Roman cement above ground floor. Moulded cornice and parapet. Most glazing bars intact. Wide doorway with a pair of Doric and Ionic engaged fluted columns, the inner ones slightly recessed, with rectangular fanlight and door of six fielded panels at the head of two steps with iron handrail. Small C19 shop window to the south of this. The south front (Stringer's Hall and Stringer's Cottage) has four windows. Partly red brick and grey headers, partly red mathematical tiles, partly weather-tiles. Two curved bays on ground and first floors with cornices over. Glazing bars intact. Doorway between the bays with engaged columns, pediment, semi-circular fanlight and door of six fielded panels at the head of three steps with iron handrail. The north front has a projection of two storeys and three windows (Denne Court). This is faced on its north with red brick and grey headers and on its west side with weather-tiles. Stringcourse, cornice and parapet. EH Listing
