As we enter the end of 2019, it's fair to say it has been an interesting year in regards to commercial aviation... It is hard to deny that Latin America's largest airline group, LATAM has been through a whirlwind of changes over the past year which is worth mentioning.
Let's start with the fact LATAM is currently in the process of refurbishing their existing and new fleet of aircraft with new interiors such as Business Class receiving new Thompson Vantage XL seats whilst Economy seats going for Recaro.
Whilst that has been taking place, it has been 3 years since LATAM introduced their new brand following LAN and TAM's merger, incorporating this smart livery.
The biggest news however was the surprise announcement that Delta Air Lines would be acquiring a 20% stake in LATAM; this making shockwaves as LATAM was a strongly aligned carrier with Oneworld and especially American Airlines.
In fact, American Airlines and LATAM planned to introduce a joint-venture agreement between themselves on flights from the United States to Latin America, which was blocked by the Chilean government, likely down to reduced competition since LATAM is a dominant carrier in Latin America and American is the strongest out of the three US carriers to serve Latin American from its Miami hub. The Chilean government also blocked plans for LATAM to enter a joint-venture agreement with IAG.
With the Chilean government blocking this move, LATAM later entered negotiations with Delta who lets be honest have a weak presence in Latin America, compared to American and United. The deal struck in September 2019 will see Delta paying the exit fee for LATAM to leave Oneworld with the date becoming effective from 1st October 2020. The deal also sees Delta acquiring the 14 order slots for LATAM's Airbus A350-1000s.
Since the announcement, LATAM is now expanding with their own flights from Latin America to Miami (which is their largest destination in the United States), which has seen American Airlines retaliate in response.
Bringing things right up to date, latest information is that LATAM and IAG will no longer proceed with their partnership plans as they will closely align with Delta Air Lines and very likely with SkyTeam, although there are currently no plans for them to join themselves at present. IAG have also given their reason that regulatory approval would be difficult as they themselves are in the process of acquiring fellow SkyTeam member, Air Europa from Globalia which is pending EU approval.
Away from all this, LATAM is rapidly repainting and refurbishing their long-haul fleet... Although initial plans were for The Boeing 777-300ERs to return back to their leasing companies (which British Airways was eyeing up!), they have since been retained and are currently being refurbished and repainted, with PT-MUI being the first to receive treatment in November 2018. The LATAM livery is an improvement over the TAM brand.
Currently, LATAM Airlines Brasil operates 10 Boeing 777s, all of which are Boeing 777-300ERs.
Mike Uniform India is one of 10 Boeing 777-300ERs in service with LATAM Airlines Brasil, delivered new to TAM Linhas Aéreas on lease from BBAM on 30th July 2013 before transferring over to LATAM Airlines Brasil following the merger with LAN and TAM on 5th May 2016 and she is powered by 2 General Electric GE90-115B engines. She was temporarily placed into storage at Abu Dhabi from 25th April 2018 to 9th November 2018.
