brooklynmuseum: The beautiful blue of Madonna’s cloak was made using the pigment ultramarine, derived from the precious blue mineral lapis lazuli. Found exclusively in the mountains of northern Afghanistan, lapis had been laboriously mined by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans from early antiquity. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, it began to be ground into powder and made into ultramarine, quickly becoming the finest and most expensive pigment of them all. Also, be sure to visit Infinite Blue on the first floor which features works from our collection that track the use of the color blue throughout history. Afganistan. Very rare. Lapis Lazuli crystal on matrix (marble, a little pyrite, some calcite). The front crystal face is ~2.5 x 2.5cm. This is the best-formed Lapis crystal I've seen. There is evidence that the area this came from in Northern Afganistan has been mined for Lapis for about 7000 years--it's the oldest known mining site in the world. Lapis is a rock and rocks don’t form crystals, but Lazuli is a mineral and it did a heck of a job turning this one into a Lapis Lazuli crystal.

Treasures from foreign places. The box was made by a neighbor while I was living in Bali and, for scale, it fills the plam of my hand. I bought the pieces of lapis lazuli in northern Thailand - they came from Afghanistan where Lapis has been mined sonce as least 2000 BCE. I bought the lapis cat in Hong Kong. I always planned to have the lapis pieces set into a ring, bacelet and necklace. But when China suddenly refused me another visa there was no time for that. Sadly I don't think I will ever be able to afford to have them set here. But tied with the carnelian like this I do wear them together as a necklace. If I ever get back to Asia I will have them set.
