The sound design in Pan's Labyrinth is effective because of the attention to detail. One way that this detail manifests itself is through precise volume control. A large portion of Pan's Labyrinth takes place at times and places when there isn't much background noise. The house is deep in the woods, and Ofelia frequently operates at night and alone. For this reason, every sound has the opportunity to draw the audience's attention. Del Toro uses this power to reinforce the Faun's age with creaking sounds, make the toad sickening with gurgling noises, and even pick up the sound of grapes rupturing in Ofelia's mouth when she steals them from the Pale Man. Minor noises are allowed to take front stage for great effect.
Another way that sound is crafted in Pan's Labyrinth is though the background music. The background music takes on two main tenors in the movie. The first is a sort of wondrous music with hints of danger that goes with Ofelia's trials. The second is Captain Vidal's music, which is very upbeat, almost pop-like Spanish music played over a radio. These two types of music are frequently juxtaposed to bring out the difference in feeling between the dangerous nights and controlled days.

For this project, I headed the foam patterning, and helped with some of the mechanical design and cabling.
The project came about in August 2016, when Karen Prell (original performer of the Worm in Labyrinth) came to Dragon Con Puppetry Track curator Beau Brown with an idea to have a giant version of the Worm character appear in the Annual Parade. Molly Coffee headed the project, and she, Spencer Murrill and I met to start the initial work on what would be a huge undertaking! Many Atlanta makers touched this project, and the Worm was a huge success at Dragon Con!
