Chola Bhatura and Chola Kulcha are a regular snack item in New Delhi.... This roadside vendor who parked in front of my college gate was my personal favorite...cos he was really clean, efficient and hygienic and the most pleasing part..had a gr8 rapport with all the students........... (esp the ones he gave on "udhar"/ loan ...)
Felt, ‘Crumbling the Antiseptic Beauty’, 1982. Bought this based on an NME review. No instant download then, kids. Ya hadda work to get Kulcha! It’s a weird little item. It’s of its time but still strange. Front man Lawrence was from Birmingham and his whole house was white, with very little furniture, books, anything: just white. Which might explain his songs. Moody, dreamlike, queasy. ‘Evergreen dazed’ is a strummed guitar with spindly, spidery lead guitar over the top. No drums, bass, vocal. ‘Fortune’ adds bass and gently rolling drum with hushed voice smeared in reverb. ‘Birdmen’ channels quiet Velvet Underground with Ian McCulloch-esque vocals, the guitar picking out strings. ‘Cathedral’ is guitar strum, ethereal muffled vocal, rolling drums. ‘I Worship the Sun’ faster in pace with guitar shimmering. ‘Templeroy’ slow and moody, guitar notes bending, vocals on edge. It’s Indie, Jim, but not as we know it…
Good food, good times, no electricity....

The Norwich gig was the second benefit night for Kenny in the city after an event was set up earlier in the month by promoters Roots and Culture, featuring rapper Skinnyman.
Described by Finbarr as one of Norwich's "Biggest and best ever reggae gigs" and featuring the vocal talents of Chanter, Errol Bellot, Kingjay, Dixie Peach, Askala Sellasie, Nereus Joseph and Hughie Izachaar, other nights are also scheduled to take place across the globe during the year.
The gigs have been organised to help towards the £6,500 cost of bringing Kenny's body back to the UK, which was buried in February 2010.
As Kenny had no travel insurance while out in Ghana, the British Embassy was under no obligation to pay for his body to be flown back home. Friends and family therefore stepped in to cover the cost.
"My phonebook is the greatest legacy Kenny gave me - that sounds stupid, but in the reggae world, like all worlds, it is who you know," said Finbarr.
"When we were organising the fundraiser I phoned up people and everyone who answered said 'Yes'. A lot of people talk the talk, but Kenny walked the walk and that's very inspiring," he added.
The Kenny Kulcha benefit gig, organised by Rebel Lion Sound System, took place at Clarke's venue on 85 Barker Street in Norwich on Saturday, 27 February 2010.
He sets shop just outside St. Xavier's School, on Raj Niwas Marg. Serves from Monday to Saturday, 12-4pm. Rs. 15 per plate (2 kachoris). He also sells Matra Kulcha. Same price.
His unique style involves spreading a layer of matra on top of the kachori and then garnishing it with onions, ginger and coriander. It doesn't take long to figure that the tangy imli ki chutney is the secret ingredient.
While most of the locals in Amritsar talk about Kesar da Dhaba or Brothers' Dhaba as the best places in town for authentic local Amritsar cuisine, this 'kulcha' (stuffed unleavened bread) place is famous as well. My brother was reading the signage which I was racking my brains as to where I had seen this before. The answer was revealed a couple of weeks after I returned to Dubai. This place had featured in the Nat Geo's documentaries- David Rocco's Dolce India as well- the same Amritsar episode which I had referred to earlier. We never got a chance to eat here though.
