...wie gesagt: der Koloss ist besteht aus einem einzigen Stein und ist mit dem Felsen verbunden, auf dem er steht. Das bedeutet das die Bildhauer vor ca. 1000 Jahren die gesamte Bergkuppe um ihn herum abgetragen haben – und wir sprechen hier nicht von Sandstein, sondern Granit oder einem ähnlich harten Stein!

Protectively the giant colossus is holding his arms over the city. Or is he suffocating it with his sheer weight? His massive skull is reminiscent of Benito Mussolini, which makes him the personification of the fascist state. The painting can be interpreted as a parable of fascist regimes in general or as a comment on the GDR: a gesture of seeming care suffocates the people, in reality it is being controlled and repressed out of fear of revolt and disobedience. It is unclear whether Wolfgang Mattheuer intended this interpretation.

Iets ten noordwesten van Binz, richting Sassnitz, ligt Prora. Dit immense complex, het bestaat uit 4 gebouwen van 500 meter lengte, is in de jaren 30 en 40 aangelegd in opdracht van de Nazi’s. Er was ruimte voor 20.000 vakantiegangers. Hier konden arbeiders uit fabrieken op adem komen en mochten soldaten uitrusten, zo was de bedoeling. Maar de Tweede Wereldoorlog gooide roet in het eten.

Rhodos (griechisch Ρόδος Rodos (f. sg.), osmanisch bis 1912 Rodos, italienisch 1912–1947 Rodi) ist eine Stadt an der Nordspitze der gleichnamigen griechischen Insel Rhodos. Sie ist seit der Verwaltungsreform 2010 Verwaltungssitz der Gemeinde Rhodos (Δήμος Ρόδου DÃmos Ródou) und bildet dort den gleichnamigen Gemeindebezirk Rhodos (Δημοτική Ενότητα Ρόδου Dimotikà Enótita Ródou). Sie besteht aus einer modernen Neustadt und einer Altstadt, die vollständig von einer Stadtmauer umgeben ist. Ãœber der Stadt finden sich auf dem Monte Smith die Reste einer antiken Akropolis. Es gibt zwei Häfen. Am Eingang des antiken Mandraki-Hafens stand angeblich der Koloss von Rhodos. Im Jahr 2011 hatte die Stadt 50.636 Einwohner.

Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos [ˈroðos]) is the principal city and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese, Greece.
