Hirsch und Hirschkuh sind die Wahrzeichen von Rhodos
Rhodos (griechisch Ρόδος Rodos (f. sg.), osmanisch bis 1912 Rodos, italienisch 1912–1947 Rodi) ist eine Stadt an der Nordspitze der gleichnamigen griechischen Insel Rhodos. Sie ist seit der Verwaltungsreform 2010 Verwaltungssitz der Gemeinde Rhodos (Δήμος Ρόδου DÃmos Ródou) und bildet dort den gleichnamigen Gemeindebezirk Rhodos (Δημοτική Ενότητα Ρόδου Dimotikà Enótita Ródou). Sie besteht aus einer modernen Neustadt und einer Altstadt, die vollständig von einer Stadtmauer umgeben ist. Ãœber der Stadt finden sich auf dem Monte Smith die Reste einer antiken Akropolis. Es gibt zwei Häfen. Am Eingang des antiken Mandraki-Hafens stand angeblich der Koloss von Rhodos. Im Jahr 2011 hatte die Stadt 50.636 Einwohner.

Rhodes (Greek: Ρόδος, Ródos [ˈroðos]) is the principal city and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is the seat and a municipal unit.[2] It has a population of approximately 50,000 inhabitants (near 90,000 in its metropolitan area). Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The citadel of Rhodes, built by the Hospitalliers, is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. The Medieval city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[3]
Today, the city of Rhodes is an important Greek urban center and popular international tourist destination.
Vi åkte från El Gouna 04.40, många timmar genom Saharas sand och bergsområden tills vi kom fram till Luxor, centrum för "Det nya riket". Första anhalt för bussen blev vid Kolosserna i Memnon. De är 20 meter höga och väger 600 ton styck och är dessutom 3500 år gamla. Man kände sig rätt liten när man stod nedanför och såg upp på dem!

In der Ausstellung des California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento befinden sich einige tonnenschwere Kolosse für den Gütertransport.
