Suvi Aarnio // PISTO-KAS! Needlework of good and bad knowledge // a collaborative artwork

PISTO-KAS! is a collaborative artwork that focuses on where our attention is attached and the kinds of knowledge we embroider as part of ourselves. During the Olohuone festival, single PISTO-KAS! artworks lead city-dwellers to Martti neighbourhood.

Already as children we have learned that the “good” usually has its counterpart. Under the most beautiful rose there are thorns. Knowledge – may it be good or bad – is what connects us to our surroundings. In the artist’s works knowledge and information are seen as multifaceted: fast and slow, even confusing. The works were conceived during spring 2015 in ALKUpiste workshops combining visual art and embroidery.

Suvi Aarnio is an artist from Rauma, Finland currently living and working in Turku. Aarnio divides her time between exploring the possibilities of needlework in visual, site specific and dialogical art as well as performing and producing events as burlesque persona Kiki Hawaiji.

The work that I do comes by way of sweat, persistence, and learning. Many fears are dispelled by one simple thing that is learned just like how each colored panel here fills dark void until a larger picture is realized.

This image was taken yesterday evening at my work place.
