At least, I think it's called the Flame of Knowledge... Anyway, this sculpture stands outside of the main entrance of the Robin Campus of Roosevelt University in Schaumberg, where I teach in the mornings. It was sunnier later, but it looked nicer here.

Camden County’s only battle took place at whats known as “Monday’s Hollow”. On October 13, 1861, a fight took place on the Wet Auglaize in Camden County, called Shanghai, (or Henrytown), (or Monday’s Hollow) between companies A and C, of the Sixth Missouri (Federal) Cavalry, commanded by Captain T.A. Switzler, and a rebel force commanded by Major M. Johnson. The Union troops came suddenly upon the rebel outpost, captured it, and compelled the guard to reveal the situation of his comrades, where they were hiding in ambush, awaiting the passage of the Union troops. This was done without alarming the concealed enemy. By the aid of this knowledge the Federal troops were enabled to surprise and attack the enemy from the rear, so that those who planned received the surprise planned for the Federal troops. The result of the fight was killed; sixty-two Confederates and one Federal, and thirty-seven Confederates captured—a decided victory for the Union troops.
Information of this battle came from this site: www.mocivilwar.org/articles/show/254
This re-enactment was done thanks to the Camden County Historical Society, and the 4th Missouri Cavalry Re-enactors.

Yesterday was a bit warm in the Cuse so I went to Cold Stone Creamery for some vanilla ice cream.
I asked for a SMALL ice cream and when I looked over, the clerk was stuffing the little cup better than a turkey.
I ran over to him and saying, nooooooooooo....I wanted a small.
Well he just passed me my order and while I walked away a tad annoyed, I thought, " well, I'll just eat half."
But my Cold Stone experience made me think about meal proportions in the U.S
A small= at least a medium and a medium= at least a large.
It's ridiculous...some how bigger is better but when you're adding on a 200-300 extra unneeded calories to my meal then we have this disease known as OBESITY.
I tried to watch another episode of No Reservations and I couldn't finish the episode.
Anthony Bourdain was in Quebec stuffing himself with endless amounts of foie gras.
Images of poor ducks and geese being forced feed kept flooding my mind.
So went back to browsing and came across the movie Food, Inc.
As many of us yankee know, the food industry is run by individuals more interested in their larger than life back accounts than the health of the American people.
When you have the time, please check out the film.
Take back your health by making healthier choices in the food you eat and where you spend your money.
The prayer hall was not big enough for everyone. Many got to wait for the second shift including the photographer. That's how he was able to take this shot.
From my heel to my toe is a measured space of 29.7 centimetres or 11.7 inches. This is a unit of progress and it is also a unit of thought. 'I can only meditate when I am walking,' wrote Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the fourth book of his 'Confessions', 'when I stop I cease to think; my mind only works with my legs.' Søren Kierkegaard speculated that the mind might function optimally at the pedestrian pace of three miles per hour, and in a journal entry describes going out for a wander and finding himself 'so overwhelmed with ideas' that he 'could scarcely walk'. Christopher Morley wrote of Wordsworth as 'employ[ing] his legs as an instrument of philosophy' and Wordsworth of his own 'feeling intellect'. Nietzsche was typically absolute on the subject - 'Only those thoughts which come from 'walking' have a value' - and Wallace Stevens typically tentative: 'Perhaps / The truth depends on a walk around the lake.' In all of these accounts, walking is not the action by which one arrives at knowledge; it is itself the means of knowing.

This is the tree of knowledge at the Ballarat University. It is a splendid sight to behold, this enormous tree in the midst of concrete buildings. I heard from someone there that when in need of extra energy, the tree is the perfect place to rejuvinate yourself. Nature is always a good place to be to be refreshed.
