Blurred text with a focus on experience

So I went on a road trip down to Piedras Blancas to see the Elephant Seals (which there were lots of them and their newborn babies along side the mothers). On the way back up, I since I was passing by anyway, I decided to get one of the shots I've wanted for a long time, McWay Falls at sunset.

If you've been checking out any of my recent previous images you may of noticed my experimentation in the fine art of HDR. This technology is great when you don't have the equipment, expertise and just gosh darn knowhow to get a image just right (at least for me!).

I'm still new at this and trying not to overdue it (and I have seen so many examples of way overdone but also others that are magnificent). Its a personal taste, something I would recommend to anyone who would like to try something different.

I would love to know your thoughts on this new direction I'm trying, good or bad.

This is the early version as the sunset was just starting and I liked the way the light was hitting the beach.

i filled in to run sound for an event of lots of community theatre groups coming in an performing various things. many of you will realize how painful that can be. but i made it... double points because i do lights not sound, but my limited knowledge was enough to mix for the day.

a big gripe lots of techs (esp sound guys) have is how bold the audience can be with regards to walking up to you can telling you how they think they can do your job better. any schmuck who has a home stereo thinks they have the knowhow to direct how the EQ on the piano should sound, or how the bass needs more volume. and of course the occaional "the light is in my eyes" or can you turn the air conditioning down from here?" to which i usually find an unused fader on the soundboard, move it up or down, and wait for the thumbs up from the patron. ::shakes head::

Pfizer accused of Covid profiteering as first-quarter sales hit $26bn

Pfizer has made nearly $26bn (£21bn) in revenues in the first three months of the year, the bulk from its Covid-19 vaccine and new pill to treat the virus, prompting fresh accusations of pandemic profiteering.

Covid vaccines have saved many lives around the world and relieved the pressure on health systems, but Pfizer has faced criticism over its vaccine pricing and its refusal to waive patent protection to enable others to make the jab.

Last week 35 campaigners from Global Justice Now, Act-Up London, Just Treatment and Stop Aids protested against what they call pandemic profiteering, and delivered wheelbarrows full of fake money to Pfizer’s UK headquarters in Surrey on the day of the company’s annual shareholder meeting.

The New York-based firm posted total sales of $25.7bn in the first quarter, up 77% from a year earlier. Of this, $13.2bn came from the Comirnaty jab it developed with Germany’s BioNTech, driven by global uptake including jabs for children over the age of five, and booster doses. Pfizer and BioNTech are also seeking US approval for the vaccine’s use in children from six months to four years old.

A further $1.5bn came from Paxlovid, a Covid pill for people who are at high risk of severe disease, including hospitalisation or death. The treatment received emergency approval from the US regulator in late December and has been cleared by the UK and EU.

Pfizer has made tens of billions of dollars during the pandemic from its Covid-related products, as has the Boston-based biotech firm Moderna, which was loss-making until it started selling a Covid-19 vaccine.

Tim Bierley, a pharma campaigner at Global Justice Now, said: “Throughout the pandemic, Pfizer has refused to share its technology and knowhow. Instead, it has maintained monopoly control over its vaccine and treatment, keeping a chokehold on global supply.

“Despite calls from campaigners to allow countries in the global south to manufacture their own vaccines and treatments, Pfizer continues to put profit over people’s health. Pfizer’s revenues almost doubled last year and now it looks like the company’s coffers are set to swell even further. At a time when millions still don’t have access to vaccines or treatments for Covid-19, this continued pandemic profiteering is harrowing.”

Pfizer’s revenues last year doubled to $81.3bn, and it expects to make record sales of $98bn to $102bn this year, half of which will come from Covid products – $32bn from Comirnaty and $22bn from Paxlovid.

On the issue of sharing intellectual property, Pfizer said others would struggle to produce its mRNA vaccine – one of only two on the market – arguing that “it is not as simple as sharing the ‘recipe’”. Manufacture of its vaccine involves more than 280 materials that come from 86 suppliers in 19 different countries.

Other companies, led by AstraZeneca, Britain’s biggest drugmaker, and Johnson & Johnson, a big US firm, went down the not-for-profit route and priced their Covid vaccines at cost during the pandemic. Towards the end of last year, AstraZeneca moved away from its not-for-profit pricing in new contracts, but insists it is still offering “equitable pricing”.

Pfizer said it also offered tiered pricing, with the wealthier nations paying in the range of about the cost of a takeaway meal, while the upper-middle-income countries were offered doses at roughly half that price and the low- and lower-middle-income countries were offered doses at a not-for-profit price.

In March, the company struck an agreement with Unicef to supply up to 4m treatment courses of Paxlovid to 95 low- and middle-income countries at a not-for-profit price.

Moderna has pledged to not enforce its coronavirus vaccine patents in some low- and middle-income countries.

Mysterious hepatitis outbreak in children has now been spotted in 20 countries, WHO says

■ WHO says at least 228 hepatitis cases have been detected in 20 countries

■ Most cases in Europe but some in Americas, Western Pacific and Southeast Asia

■ The recent global outbreak has puzzled scientists, who do not yet know cause

Eight more countries have reported cases of a mystery hepatitis in children in the past week, the World Health Organization has confirmed.

It brings the total number of countries with cases to 20. Globally, 228 children have been sickened with an unusual form of the liver disease and another 50 suspected cases are being probed.

One death has been confirmed but four more are suspected, and 18 children have required a liver transplant.

Experts say the current count could be the 'tip of the iceberg', with many countries only now stepping up surveillance for the unusual complication.

Most of the cases so far have been detected in Europe but there are others in the Americas, the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Scientists are puzzled by the spate of cases because none of the affected children have tested positive for normal hepatitis-causing viruses.

Adenoviruses — which normally cause the common cold and stomach bugs — are thought to be the culprit, despite rarely causing liver inflammation.

There are concerns lockdowns may have weakened children's immunity to normally benign viruses and investigations are also looking at whether a mutated adenovirus or Covid are involved.

But UK scientists have admitted it could take at least three months until health chiefs know exactly what is behind the spate of cases.

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told reporters in Geneva today: 'As of May 1, at least 228 probable cases were reported to WHO from 20 countries, with over 50 additional cases under investigation.'

Most of the cases have been detected in the UK (145) and US (20), which have some of the strongest surveillance systems.

It previously announced hepatitis cases of an 'unknown origin' had been confirmed in Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as Israel, Denmark, Norway and Romania.

In its first update on the hepatitis outbreak since April 23, the WHO said cases have spread to eight more countries.

The agency did not reveal which countries had reported the extra cases but other health bodies revealed Austria, Germany, Poland, Japan and Canada have detected cases, while Singapore is probing a possible case in a 10-month-old baby.

And Indonesia yesterday said three children had died from suspected hepatitis of unknown cause.

The 145 affected children in Britain, who have mainly been aged five and under, initially suffered from diarrhoea and nausea, followed by jaundice — yellowing of the skin and whites of eyes.

The WHO confirmed one death, although it did not reveal the location. One fatality in the US is being probed, along with the three in Indonesia.

UK health chiefs told MailOnline today that no hepatitis deaths have been logged in Britain.

The youngsters in Indonesia, aged two, eight and 11, suffered from a fever, jaundice, as well as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and dark-coloured urine.

The country's health chiefs suspect the cases were hepatitis but they are running tests to determine whether the usual A to E hepatitis viruses were behind them, or if their origin is unknown.

The WHO was first informed of the cases by health chiefs in Scotland on April 5, after they detected 10 cases in children under the age of 10, the earliest of which was dated back to January.

This was more than the average of seven to eight non-A to E hepatitis cases that Scotland usually logs over the course of a year.

Dr Meera Chand, director of clinical and emerging infections at UKHSA, said parents may be concerned but the likelihood of their child developing hepatitis is 'extremely low'.

'However, we continue to remind parents to be alert to the signs of hepatitis – particularly jaundice, which is easiest to spot as a yellow tinge in the whites of the eyes – and contact your doctor if you are concerned,' she said.

Dr Chand added: 'Normal hygiene measures including thorough handwashing and making sure children wash their hands properly, help to reduce the spread of many common infections.

'As always, children experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea should stay at home and not return to school or nursery until 48 hours after the symptoms have stopped.'

Hepatitis is usually rare in children, but experts have already spotted more cases in the UK since January than they would normally expect in a year.

Scientists have previously suggested cases could be just the 'tip of the iceberg', with more likely to be out there than have been spotted so far.

Professor Alastair Sutcliffe, a leading paediatrician at University College London, told MailOnline health chiefs may not know the cause until later this summer.

He said: 'With modern methods, informatics, advanced computing, real time PCR and whole genome screening, I would think finding the cause with some reasonable reliability will take three months.'

Professor Sutcliffe said discovering the cause could be slowed by red tape across international boundaries, with difficulties in transporting biomaterials across countries.

Parental consent, data protection and laws regulating the use of human tissue in the UK could all act to slow research, he said.

Searching for an unknown cause is especially hard because cases may have multiple factors behind them that are not consistent across all illnesses.

UK health officials have ruled out the Covid vaccine as a possible cause, with none of the ill British children having been vaccinated because of their young age.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) official said the disease was 'quite rare' but judged the risk to children as 'high' because of the potential impact.

The risk for European children cannot be accurately assessed as the evidence for transmission between humans was unclear and cases in the European Union were 'sporadic with an unclear trend', it said.

But given the unknown causes of the disease and the potential severity of the illness caused, the ECDC said the outbreak 'constitutes a public health event of concern'.

13/03/2023, Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Islas Canarias, Spain.

Bear with me, while I explain how these Scottish truck drivers found themselves delivering equipment to an oil drilling ship here at Las Palmas.

Since the the oil price plunge of 2014-2016 - the biggest drop in oil prices in modern history - primarily caused by an oversupply in the market, most oil majors and prospectors found themselves in an uneconomically viable situation.

Over capacity in oil production and especially in oil exploratory drilling forced many of the mega expensive drilling ships to have their drilling contracts forestalled, or at the end of their existing contracts to find no new work.

These ships were being contracted at wild, but necessary prices of up to $500,000 per day, due to huge mortgages on the ships and their initial building costs.

(I believe the most expensive example's building cost was the Billion dollar plus 'Stena Icemax'. See here: flic.kr/p/RZ5QJr )

So, much oil exploration work was being undertaken on the West African coast, and across the Atlantic, offshore Brazil.

As the drilling ships became unemployed, the necessity of finding a suitable, large, deep-water port to keep them safely moored in, and with a pleasant climate to prevent corrosion and humidity damage, and that is where Las Palmas found itself to be the ideal location, at the 'crossroads' of the Atlantic.

In addition, the port has long established and experienced shipyards with specialist engineers and technicians.

The port quickly found itself in great demand for the laid up ships, and as an economic boost, there were lucrative mooring fees, tug requirements, stores, and large engineering projects to be had.

The drilling ships (& oil rigs) require ongoing maintenance and often, modifications to suit each specific drilling contract, both before and after completion.

The 'northern oil capital of Europe' is Aberdeen in Scotland and thus, specialist knowhow, equipment and hauliers are based there.

The result being a regular stream of heavy duty trucks, not least those of Grampian Continental haulage, picking up and delivering equipment to the ships, from all over Europe.

A former, regular driver, and Las Palmas visitor, for Grampian was Rab Lawrence, a well known contributor to Flickr, and a sometime correspondent of mine, although our paths never directly crossed.

Here are a few of his compatriots waiting to have their truck loads discharged, before having to catch the circa 36 hour ferry back to Huelva, or Cadiz, in southern Spain.

These are the raw chemicals for making PYROCAT-P film developer. From L>R sodium hydrogen sulphite:4-aminophenol hydrochloride:pyrocatechol:potassium carbonate.PYROCAT developers originally formulated by Sandy King. {I made the 4-aminophenol hydrochloride myself by hydrochloric acid hydrolysis of paracetamol. Unlike 4-aminophenol free-base, the hydrochloride is stable to the atmosphere. There seems to be an awful amount of confusion amongst photographers regarding the difference between 4-aminophenol (free base) and 4-aminophenol hydrochloride. The difference is SIMPLE to comprehend...the hydrochloride is simply the free base chemically combined with hydrogen chloride. It is an ionic compound formulated simply as [C6H8NO]+[Cl]- It is very soluble in water and when silver nitrate solution is added to the solution a thick white precipitate of silver chloride forms instantly. If anyone wants further information or clarification let me know!

The Tormach 4-axis CNC is a powerful, affordable, low maintenance CNC machine. It can cut some fairly high precision parts at high speed with little error. It takes a decent bit of programming and some solid machining knowhow to get perfect results but it's well worth it.

TechShop brought me on to teach their CNC classes a few months ago and I jumped at the opportunity. As part of my duties I used the machine as much as possible, figuring out bugs, making projects to show off, gathering material for class, and generally showing people how the whole process is done. I made these as a testament to what can be done with some CNC operations and a little hand work.

I machined the eyepieces out of a set of Ferris machinist wax blocks which were then cast in bronze. Each eyepiece has a flat cap made with the same method. The lenses are laser cut 2way mirror plexiglass from Tap Plastics. The nose bridge was milled from a bar of solid brass using the 4th axis attachment.

This is the damaged daguerreotype I mentioned in an earlier posting after Casey Waters restored it as best he could. It was on cloudy and corroded life support when we got it at an antique mall. Once restored, we could see the all the scuffs where someone in the past had attempted to "clean it up" causing wear on her facial area giving the young girl a five 0'clock shadow. However, we can also clearly see her ebalorate dress and delicate lace gloves clearly. Casey worked wonders, especially considering what he had to work with at the start. My photo here is the best I could do with my limited equipment and limited knowhow in natural window light. It could have been worse - you could have seen me reflected in the mirror like surface from a variety of angles. My wife and I feel like we have brought back to life this young girl whose memory, even though unidentified, would be lost forever.

This lineup begins on Linz's Main Square, proceeds clear across the Nibelungen Bridge, right through the AEC and out into the Ars Electronica Quarter. It's made up of countless young experts who, on Saturday, September 3 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM, demonstrate their skills as well as discuss and make available their specialized knowledge. Passers-by perusing this array of topics. The Marketplace of Talent lets you take a peek into the younger generation's world of knowledge.

The original decayed curtains have been cut free from their laths after marking their EXACT lengths and marking the EXACT positions on the rollers. It is important to use curtain material of the same gauge as the original ;0.18mm:measure with a vernier.

My Dad's been making maple syrup almost every year since I can remember. I swear it tastes different (and better) than any other syrup around. :)
