My rules for taking a 'selfie'.

1. Never look at the camera.

2. Never take a close up.

3. Take it in an iconic location (cliff edges on mountains are good).

4. Try to look heroic (even though you're knackered).

5. Get the position of the sun just right.

6. Don't fall off (I don't do action shots).

So this is me on Stac Pollaidh in the North West Highlands of Scotland looking at the sunrise between the mountains of Cul Mor (left) and Cul Beag (right).

After hiking for 5 hours, totally knackered and able to enjoy the beauty of the prominent mountains cape of Wugongshan.

Looking knackered and weather beaten and generally unloved 37678 at the time was allocated to Crewe Diesel Depot's LWCW Class 37/47 "Freight" Pool of locomotives. At this time English Welsh and Scottish Railway had adpoted a common user policy and it was common to find the shadow freight company's locomotives to be operating well off what had been the normal territory!

37678 is seen having run round its train of loaded and empty Salmon Wagons and rail mounted crane as it seen leaving Sheffield with 7T49 Darnell to Doncaster Wood Yard. The train had been engaged in overnight engineering operations and had run round its train in the station sidings at Sheffield. Along with the 142 and 143 DMU's in the back ground 37678 is also a no more having been Stored un-serviceable by EWS on the 11-12-00 the loco was withdrawn from stock on 29-03-07 and scrapped 04-05-07 at EMR at Kingsbury.

Flynnie and I took the last shot to try to remind Njorloj about his car, which has been sitting in this barn for about 5 years.

Jo jo, odvoz mam domluveny he says, but he still hasn't been to collect it...;-))

So here's another try. Will be sorry to see it go... ;-)

110-sec exposure.

That is all from this retrobitch..., I bid you farewell.

As we were making our way across the Ferrybridge grassland, we noticed this obviously tired Dunny by the shoreline. Took a few shots then backed off to let it rest. Weymouth, Dorset.

Week 29: Out of bounds

It's over, the Clifftop thing, for another year.....

As shot, unedited. It's 3am and I'm knackered!

A long jaunt on congested motorways has left me rather knackered; can you tell?

Bed that's what as I'm f**king knackered :)

Looking rather forlorn, well completely knackered really, 90050 rots away alongside the Down Fast & Down Slow Independent lines on the far side of Basford Hall yard on 22nd March 2023. The green Brush 47830 and a host of withdrawn 86s are visible amongst the yard scenery.

The 90 was withdrawn in 2004 after a transformer fire and hasn't turned a wheel since. I think it's still retained as part of the Freightliner fleet.

Smudge sleeping in the sunny window.

I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself too; this afternoon I put out my laundry to dry, and trimmed, albeit just as far as I can reach (I'm very short) the overgrown trees to let in more light to my kitchen (they've gone nuts in this glorious weather). Of course now I'm completely knackered! It's not like I can do much even at the best of times, so I'm thinking I'm back to normal.

I've finally gotten round to editing the stills I took at the Blissfields festival last weekend. There's some in there I'm really pleased with. It's not all just band shots either. More soon.

I'd been waiting for the chance to photograph this for a small competition. It was just what I was looking for for 'Times Past' with the emphasis on Decay. When I ran it through Photomatix I saw this and decided it didn't suit the comp but it did suit Flickr. I hope some of you like it.

3 shots at +/- 2 with PP in Photomatix 4.1 and Photoshop.

My photography style is different as being disabled I take most of my photos from my wheelchair scooter or from my car seat, this makes composition a little more difficult but I try my damndest to get a great photo, I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoy taking them..

I will do my best to get round to looking at your photos and commenting on them and faving them.

Random Fact du jour: I'm going through one of those 'blegh' times of a 365.

I'm knackered. So much driving this weekend, a 14K run, a long touring walk around Edinburgh (showing it off to foreign friends), kids with colds today and the usual work and daily chores. So many things and none of it as Holly. I really need to find time again. Still, looks like I have another weekend coming up where I might get out again. Any locals want to meet up for drinks, food or shopping?

As I start to write this it's 12.23am, I'm knackered because I only got 4 hours of sleep last night and I want to get all these captions written so I can just make the photos public as the week goes on without having to do any more brain work.

On Saturday I had the tremendous privilege of spending a couple of hours with Lydia and David and shooting their engagement photos! It was my first time out doing engagement stuff and so I was a bit nervous, but I'm so happy with how the shots came out and so I'll be posting more here as the week goes on.

These two are just the absolute best. Lydia is a friend from university and when she asked me if I'd do these photos it was the biggest compliment I've ever received. I met David for the first time on the day of the shoot and he's just lovely. They're so precious but hilarious at the same time and I had the loveliest and most fun time with them and Saturday was just a tremendous blessing to me.

There were many highlights of the two hours I spent shooting them, but one that stands out to me was when I was chatting to David at the house beforehand while Lydia got changed upstairs. To provide a bit of context, they live in different cities and see each other once a fortnight. We were talking about train travel (exciting stuff) and how he had a 4 hour journey to get here on the Friday and was going to have another 4 hour journey back home on the Sunday. I commented that that was "absolutely killer", or something to that effect (without going into too many details, I had spent 12 hours on the train the Saturday beforehand and was feeling particularly resentful towards long train journeys), to which David looked at me and said, smiling, "Yeah, but it's worth it."

For those of you who are interested, here's a brief update on my life. Week 3 of the autumn semester has just started, but I've been back in the house at uni since Sept 5th. It's a beautiful house and I love living in it. This semester I'm studying International Relations Theory, International Politics Since 1945 and Politics in the USA. I now find myself cycling all over the place and I find walking to be an awful waste of time. This will probably be the only bit of shooting I get to do this semester, everything is pretty busy. The cramming of most of my contact hours into two days means I essentially have a 5 day weekend, but I have so much reading to do and other stuff going on that it's not like I can just sit back and relax. I'm still very much single, but if anyone in the Norfolk area fancies changing that just give me a bell, haha. This year I'm heading up the Christian Union Media Team (a new initiative exploring the ways we can use photography and videography as means of outreach) and I'm on the committee for the Stop The Traffik Society and we're getting very busy planning stuff for the International Day Against Slavery next week. I'm still involved with Youth For Christ and I love it. Things are mostly really good and I'm mostly happy.

I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do.

Oh, and I'm sorry for being such an awful contact. Life is busy. On Wednesday I'll have more time to catch up on the last week, sorry.

I was knackered… Another long week and being held up at 11pm in bridge traffic meant a 1am finish on the Thursday night – could I really be bothered heading for a wild camp about a 2hour drive away on a Friday evening? Maybe just relax, crack open a beer and watch the footy?

The good forecast saw me dump the beer and footy idea and I was soon on a familiar road headed for Glencoe. “90% chance of cloud free summits” one forecast read, with others along a similar vein. Pulling up at the car park under Stob Coire Raineach, I questioned my sanity. Cloud filled the sky as I watched the que of traffic coming off the hill. However, I eventually sorted myself out and was soon ascending the path to the bealach on Buachaille Etive Beag. Last time I had visited it was snowy and blowing a hooly! This time the wind was lighter and the ground was green and not white. Physically I was feeling strong, mentally – I was exhausted….

I sat at the twin cairn gaping at the cracking view to the big Buachille and eventually dragged myself up to start the final ascent to the summit of Stob Coire Raineach. I had planned on another camp on Chrulaiste – however I guessed it would be busy with the forecast and the weekend looming. I was hoping for a quiet time up here 

The ascent is a little rocky in places from the bealach, but I was soon on the top taking in the views. At first glance I thought I would easily find a pitch with numerous grassy spots, however finding a place with grass and no rocks proved impossible. Eventually I succumbed and relied on the air ground sheet to do its best. Had I had my old rolly up ground matt, I’d have been in trouble ;)

Tent up, tea on and sunset was approaching. That wasn’t the only thing approaching – cloud was hugging the summits now and any thoughts of a spectacular sunset were dashed! 20.45 and I headed to bed- knackered!

Usually I sleep poorly on wild camps but tonight I slept soundly…. Until 03.49 am! I wasn’t sure if I was still dreaming but the whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of propellers and engine noise was growing to the point that I eventually literally jumped out of the tent thinking the helicopter was about to join me inside. The cloud hadn’t cleared and the helicopter passed up the glen with it spot light illuminating a huge triangle of space. This wasn’t good, I hope all involved are safe and well. Watching in the darkness from the summit I could see the rescue operation unfold for the next hour somewhere in the darkness towards the top of Beinn Fhada. Once again it shows the bravery and dedication these heros go through to help someone likely to be a stranger.

I headed back to bed hoping that all involved were ok.

Sunrise was due at 06.15, so I set the alarm for 5.15, but for the first time, I slept right through it!! I woke with about 10 minutes to spare. At first glance it was still cloudy and I contemplated going back to sleep. However I thought I better check the eastern horizon – just in case! I was glad I did because the sunrise was spectacular… In a frenzied 10 minute spell, I fumbled with lenses and tripod’s and got the camera set up just in time to watch the sun illuminate the clouds and then rise over the banks of fog that covered Rannoch Moor – an amazing sight! It was over just as quickly as it arrived and I was soon checking my weather app. Blues skies forecast – mmmmmm – Not here, not now and in fact the low cloud rolled in reducing visibility to zero – time to head off… I descended quickly into the gloom and was back at the car for about 09.30.

I need a remote for my camera! After 3 takes of running up the hill on a 10 second timer to get in position, i was bloody knackered!

I know, i am obsessed with swifts and swallows LOL LOL.But with there being fewer of them around this year and the crap weather, opportunities have been few and far between.

On another note,is my camera knackered ?.On 1 or 2 of todays pics when looked at on the camera monitor half the pic was ok and the other half was flashing black.Like it was an old negative ?, If i zoomed in a little the flashing black stopped, and the pics have downloaded to my computer ok.This has never happened before today, any ideas anyone ?.Thanks.

I swear that the one below is saying ... "ok I have given you my best side ... now where are the worms!!"

Went climbing this morning - feeling rather knackered, but still had a decent climb anyway. Came home, had lunch, showered, then changed the bed. Tim did a couple of loads of washing too - and washed the car.

Chores over, I had some time to play around with my new flash. I've got loads to learn, but I'm very happy to find that I can just use it straight off without really understanding anything about it! As seems to be mandatory, I thought I'd start off with some water drop shots. It was good fun, and I actually got a few pretty sharp ones, so it was worth trying. Tim helped me pick this one - I'm not quite sure how it ended up looking like a droplet within a droplet - perhaps there was another smaller one behind - but as Tim pointed out, it looks like the Death Star. Very topical.

We had a little drive out in the clean car this afternoon, then came back for dinner and a relaxed evening in.

Maybe its her knackered converse that make her feel like a feather.

Still, she will now stay as a flying girl

Didn't go out this morning since the weather forecast didn't look amazing and I was knackered, so I've got a chance to process some of the holiday snaps from Tenerife.

This shot was an attempt to capture the feel of the sunsets, with the incredible strength of the direct sun without any cloud to filter it. Obviously, there was no combination of filters that would hold back the brightness and I decided HDR would just look un-natural, so I allowed the sky to blow out in order to give that sun-baked feel.

The most impressive thing was that the Sigma 17-70 didn't give any flare at all, despite being pointed almost directly into the setting sun.
