I had to take a photo for the photography club I am apart of at school. Our theme was "kitchen appliances" so I decided to create a story out of the photo, and personify the toaster... sort of. ;)

There is a cool book/coffee shop in Old Ottawa South called Black Squirrel Books. Behind the counter I spied a set of storage tins in Avocado no less.
I recall many (many) years ago we had a set exactly the same. We had purchased it from the now defunct Consumers' Distributing (no Ikea then). In those days these matched your fridge and stove. You could get them in Avocado, Harvest Gold and Coppertone a strange brown colour. The young man in the book store told me they had been bought off Kijiji as "antique canisters". Man I need to lie down I really feel old!!

This is the Boscov's store located at 2899 Whiteford Rd, York, PA.
This store opened in 1989, and still has all of its original neon and other Boscov's decor. Being fairly young, and missing most of the golden age of retail, it's very nice to see stores like this holding out with their epic decor.

The rusty and faded metal sign for a shuttered kitchen appliances store in Schluechtern. This is one of the first times I've actually seen a rusty old sign here (Germans are very clean, modern and efficient and would usually have painted or replaced it long before it became rusty.) But I used to love seeing signs like this in the States!

Sam: Welcome to Appliance Direct! I love appliances! Here we have three of the best-selling dishwashers in Florida. One, two, three. Plus a European model for good measure! We're gonna test them right here, right now. How they clean, how loud they are, and how much energy they use. How do we test? Simple. Put a cake in it. We're putting fresh red velvet cake in each dishwasher, hitting the start button, and letting them work it out. Why this test? Number one complaint for Science Appliance off the web is about food left in the dishwasher after the cycle is done and dishes are supposed to be clean.
Lee: Science Appliance is where customers learn how appliances work from a kid's perspective.
Sam: Let's be very fair. Every one of these dishwashers puts out a clean dish if you wash them first. That's an old appliance joke, folks. Get it? They do a great job if you pre-wash? That's how retailers sell junk for more money. Get you to pre-wash. Do you wash your car before you took it to the detail? Would the car wash be worth less if you did? Real dishwashers really wash. Manufacturers tell the retailers, but the retailers don't tell anybody. Let's see what Florida's favorites can do with a big job.
Lee: Let's open them up. This European one took the longest and left the most cake. The cheapy has a lot of the cake left. In this one, all of the cake is gone, but everything is still wet. Perfectly clean, perfectly dry, and not one crumb. Sam, what do you think?

Faced with extensive water damage to their home, the Patel’s turned to Cantoni designer Andrea Petor to infuse new life into their family’s beloved weekend retreat in Montgomery, Texas. Balancing the client’s minimalist wants with their love of hosting, Andrea created a cohesive design to accommodate their frequent guests and large extended family. Beginning with the kitchen remodel, Andrea worked with the Patel’s to identify the best layout for the space, understanding it would be used regularly for entertaining. To maximize storage space, Andrea designed custom floor to ceiling cabinetry finished in high gloss white lacquer. She selected Miele optic white appliances to enhance the sleek design. Andrea had a custom dining table built into the island to provide ample seating and ensure the entire family could enjoy meals together. The kitchen’s monochromatic color palette was carried throughout the interiors allowing the home’s beautiful waterfront views to take center stage. It's hard to make a juicer look interesting, but maybe the story will at least make you smile...so here's the story.
Not exactly sure what I was thinking when I thought a juicer would be a nice gift for my dh birthday. I guess I thought it would be a great way for all of us to sneak those veggies into our diets, making our diets a bit healthier. Here's what I've found in just a couple of short days. Juicers are extremely noisy & messy. Bits of fruit and veggies come flying out of the shoot before you can get the stopper on, leaving splatters of pulp everywhere. The husband has now juiced just about everything in sight. Which brings me to my final point as I worry about how much weight we're going to gain trying to be healthy, as it's pretty tasty. Well except the kids won't touch it....how could I have been so wrong....

A remarkable publicity booklet issued by the UK chemicals giant ICI - Imperial Chemical Industries - by their Plastics Division based in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire and published, by date code, in November 1956. There's no author and sadly, given the cartoon style illustrations, no artist or designer. In some moments there's a look of Ronald Searle but in many others the name of Susan Einzig, the artist, illustrator and teacher, springs to mind. That said there is also a stylistic difference - and that could be intentional - between the cave dwellers sketches and those of Prim Mrs 1950s.
ICI was formed in 1926 to help ensure that Britain's chemical industries were both more rationally organised at a time of great chemical advances and also more able to face overseas competition from both US and German concerns. By the 1950s ICI was, like the rest of the industry, actively involved in the develoment, manufacturing and marketing of plastic materials; although earlier 'plastics' had existed, such as Bakelite, the industry was now using materials based on oil feedstocks to produce many of the plastics we know today. Those mentioned in this booklet, as we move around the house looking at the many and multifarious uses of pastics, include P.V.C. (polyvinyl chloride), Alkathene (a form of polythene, a material ICI discovered and developed), nylon, Pespex and a range of other tradenamed materials including Diakon, Darvic, Crinothene and Mouldrite synthetic resins.
The story is told humourously as to uses and maintenance and illustrates two things; firstly the deliberate marketing of plastics to female consumers, the market of housewives and housemakers at a time of growing consumer confidence and for items that would be chosen and purchased by them. Secondly, as described on the back cover, "We Want Plastics". It is interesting that, a little like say asbestos, plastics were sold as a miracle material and there is no denying the 'good' they have done for modern civilisation - for example, food packaging and hygiene has undoubtedly saved countless lives over the decades. But perhaps we are now starting to re-examine the role plastics play in our wider world, both in terms of production, pollution and impact on human and natural health. Not in this booklet mind you - this was the New Elizabethan Age.
