Der Rieseneisvogel (Megaceryle maxima) ist der größte Eisvogel Afrikas, wo er ein heimischer Brutvogel ist.
Die Brut findet zwischen September und Januar statt. Das Nest ist ein langer horizontaler Tunnel, den beide Geschlechter mit ihren Füßen und Schnäbeln in ein Flussufer graben. Das Eingangsloch ist 11 cm hoch und 15 cm breit. Die Länge des Tunnels beträgt in der Regel 2 m, es wurde aber auch schon ein Tunnel von 8,5 m Länge gefunden. Ein Gelege von etwa drei Eiern wird in einer Kammer am Ende des Tunnels gelegt.
Diese große Art ernährt sich von Krabben, Fischen und Fröschen, die sie durch Tauchen von einem Ansitz aus fängt.

The giant kingfisher (Megaceryle maxima) is the largest kingfisher in Africa, where it is a resident breeding bird.
Breeding takes place between September and January. The nest is a long horizontal tunnel that is excavated into a river bank by both sexes using their feet and bills. The entrance hole is 11 cm high and 15 cm wide. The tunnel is typically 2m in length but a tunnel of 8.5m has been recorded. A clutch of around three eggs is laid in a chamber at the end of the tunnel.
This large species feeds on crabs, fish, and frogs, caught by diving from a perch.

Last week, I shared a photo of a female Kingfisher.
I said on this occasion that she had a "nice surprise" in store for you. I rather believe that this surprise will please some photographers because it is about, I think, an interesting observation.
It seems to me that this frog was caught on the ground and not in the water. Incredible for a fisherman!
I had never seen a bird catching a prey, not even a fish. And the catch of this frog, relatively large for such a small bird, was a total discovery.
I observed the violence that there is, even in the world of "little animals".
I'm sharing this photo for its animal behavior observation interest, but I prefer the softer scenes!

La semaine dernière, j'ai posté une photo de Martin Pêcheur femelle. J'ai dit à cette occasion qu'elle vous réservait une "belle surprise".
Je crois plutôt que cette surprise plaira à certains photographes car il s'agit, je pense, d'une observation intéressante.
Sauf erreur de ma part, cette grenouille a été attrapée sur le sol et non dans l'eau. Incroyable pour un pêcheur!
Je n'avais jamais vu un oiseau attraper une proie, pas même un poisson. Et la scène avec cette grenouille, relativement grosse pour un oiseau si petit, a été une découverte totale.
J'ai pu observer la violence qu'il existe même dans ce monde des "petits animaux".
Je publie cette photo pour son intérêt d'observation du comportement animal, mais je préfère les scènes plus douces!

On a sunny and hot morning in the marsh, I surprised this juvenile kingfisher just as he came to this perch. He stayed long enough for me to take a few good shots.
J'ai réussi à surprendre ce martin-pêcheur par un beau matin ensoleillé et chaud dans le marais. Je l'ai surpris tout juste comme il arrivait sur son perchoir et tout juste comme j'arrivais dans une éclairicie parfaite pour le voir et le photographier sans qu'il ne me détecte immédiatement. J'ai eu le temps de faire de très bonnes prises avant qu'il ne décide de partir.

This female kingfisher is quite a smart one. As soon as the temperatures drop and small creeks and ponds might freeze she moves to the Zoo of Basel. There are ponds near buildings that nearly never freeze because of the heating of the buildings and the sun that warms the walls during the day. The reflection of the heat prevents water from freezing.
Dieses Eisvogel-Weibchen ist nicht auf den Kopf gefallen. Sobald die Temperaturen fallen und kleine Bäche oder Teiche überfrieren könnten, zieht sie in den Zoo von Basel. Die geheizten Gebäude wärmen das Wasser. Auch die Sonne heizt während des Tages die Mauern auf, die wiederum die Wärme an das Wasser abgeben und so ein Gefrieren häufig verhindern
Taille approximative de 16 cm - Poids de 30 à 45 g.

Not the most ideal background ( he was hiding in the bushes), and the picture would possibly profit from a bit more professional pp (which I'm not familiar with, maybe one day...;).
But I was so happy that he stayed in this place for quite a while.

Tel que promis revoilà la Sophie...
Naturellement Sophie se présente régulièrement sur la perche mais elle est beaucoup nerveuse qu'a sa première visite... Elle survole la perche en jetant un oeil dans l'orifice de la tente pour voir s'il n'y a pas de gros oeil qui l'observe et si il y est passe son chemin... Alors il me faut jouer de finesse avec cette brilliante membre de la famille des Alcedinidae. Je serai absent de Flickr pour un peu plus d'une semaine mais je ne manquerai pas de visiter vos galeries à mon retour.

As promised, here is Sophie again ...
Naturally Sophie regularly appears on the perch but she is much more nervous that at her first visit ... She flies over the perch keeping a eye on the opening in the tent on the shore line to see if there is no big eye who is observing her... And if he is there his way she goes... So I have to play with finesse with this brilliant member of the family Alcedinidae. I'll be away from Flickr for a little over a week but I'll be sure to visit your galleries when I get back.

Zu seiner Nahrung zählen vorwiegend Großinsekten, aber auch kleine Säugetiere und Vögel. In großen Teilen Europas und dem westlichen Asien heimisch, brütet er in halboffenen Landschaften, die ein gutes Angebot an Hecken und Sträuchern aufweisen. Die Nester werden bevorzugt in Dornsträuchern angelegt. Durch die Intensivierung der Landwirtschaft musste der Neuntöter in Mitteleuropa in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. QUIEN ES ESTE PEQUEÑO ENANO?
A esta especie de ave coraciforme, que forma parte de la familia de los cerylidae, se la conoce con el nombre científico de Chloroceryle aenea. Vive en las tierras bajas de los trópicos americanos, distribuyéndose desde el sur de México hasta el centro de BrasilSuele vivir cerca de arroyos o grandes fuentes de agua, en densos bosques y manglares. Principalmente ocupa la cuenca del Amazonas, así como la cuenta del río Tocantins en el estado brasileño de Pará.
Tiene 13 cm de largo y pesa 18 g. Tiene la forma de martín pescador típica, con una cola corta y el pico largo. Es verde oliva en la parte superior con un collar de color amarillo-naranja en todo el cuello. La parte inferior es rojizo y el vientre de color blanco. La hembra tiene una estrecha banda verde en el pecho. Las aves jóvenes se parecen a los adultos, pero tienen la parte inferior más pálido, sin la banda de la hembra adulta y sin Le faltan las manchas blancas en las alas y los flancos.
El martín pescador enano tiene una amplia distribución que se extiende desde el sur de México, a través de América Central hasta el oeste de Ecuador, y en el este hasta el centro de Bolivia y el centro de Brasil. La especie ocupa toda la cuenca del Amazonas y la cuenca del río Tocantins en el estado brasileño de Pará. También se produce en Trinidad y Tobago.
Este diminuto martín pescador habita densos bosques y manglares, a lo largo de pequeños arroyos o ríos con los bancos de vegetación densa.
El martín pescador enano suele cazar desde una percha, o una rama baja cerca del agua, antes de sumergirse para capturar pequeños peces o renacuajos. También se alimenta de insectos que captura en el vuelo.
El nido es un túnel horizontal de hasta 40 cm de profundidad, escavado en el banco del río, en un montículo de tierra, o de incidentalmente en un nido de termitas arbóreas. La hembra pone tres, a veces cuatro, huevos blancoSe reconocen dos subespecies:

La subespecie del sur, C. a. aenea, tiene dos líneas de manchas blancas en las alas, y la del norte, C. a. stictoptera tiene tres o cuatro líneas de puntos y una mancha blanca oculta de plumas en la parte inferior de la cola.
