"This fine pewter facsimile is cast from a Roman key made of bronze. The original, which is at present housed in a private collection is more than 2000 years old. Remarkably similar to many present day keys, this one also worked on a simple but effective lever lock system. Although the history of locks and keys stretches back more than 4000 years, it was not until the rise of the Roman Empire that the basic technology of Eastern and Ancient Egyptian locks was developed further. Bronze was a good alloy to use for keys as it was both strong and corrosion resistant, characteristics born out by the recent discovery of perfectly preserved examples such a this one. It was foun in an pen field in Southern England. Being such a small key it seems portable that it was used for securing a casket, keeping safe jewels and coins in a prosperous Romano-British household."
