Kanchenjunga, just after sunrise, viewed from Kalimpong, West Bengal in India. The main peak of the Kanchenjunga (a part of the Himalayan Mountain range) has an altitude of 8,586 m which is the third highest peak in the world and the highest in India.

Here is a panoramic shot of the Kanchenjungha taken a couple of days later: www.flickr.com/photos/shaunakguharoy/15697509249/

Best viewed in large size.

The small tortoiseshell is mainly reddish-orange in colour, with black and yellow markings on the forewings and a ring of blue spots around the edge of the wings. The similar painted lady is also orange with black spots, but lacks the yellow and blue markings. Infact, it has been named Denmark's national butterfly.

I am crazy about new types of butterfly. Whenever I see a new species/sub species , I try to click it as fast as possible as, I believe, Life is short and It may happen, I miss it forever and never ever see that species again because there are some 800 species in India alone. Some may be there inside dense forests, out of human reach

As the name suggests, I got it inside Morgan House, Kalimpong and did not want to scare it. hence clicked it from distance and from another angle.

UPDATE- Got the ID- its #Vanessaindica #IndianRedAdmiral #Kalimpong </u?

I did not venture far my my wonderful homestay while in Kalimpong (I can't recommend Tenam Gardens Homestay enough). One of the times I did go out, was for a walk up to the top of nearby Deolo Hill. It was only a 3km walk, but the google maps description was a bit deceptive when it said "mostly flat." My watch tells me I went up the equivalent of 130 floors in that 3km walk, and when i was carrying my full backpack of camera gear, my legs and shoulders suggested it felt more like 200 floors, lol.

It was an enjoyable, if steep, walk though, and I am glad i did it. Sadly once I got to Deolo Park at the top, with its much vaunted views, the clouds had rolled in and visibility was between 20-100 metres. That may have ruined any chance of grand panoramas across the mountains and valleys, but it did provide opportunity for some nice misty shots as I walked the road back down the hill.

Kalimpong is a hill station in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located at an average elevation of 1,250 metres (4,101 ft). The hills are nestled within higher peaks and the snow-clad Himalayan ranges tower over the town in the distance. Mount Kanchenjunga at 8,586 m (28,169 ft) the world's third tallest peak, is clearly visible from Kalimpong.

Kalimpong is known for its educational institutions, many of which were established during the British colonial period. It used to be a gateway in the trade between Tibet and India before China's annexation of Tibet and the Sino-Indian War.

In Kalimpong the common take off point is from the Dello Hills. There are two types of flights offered - Medium (for about 15 minutes) and High (for about 30 minutes). Although the take off point is same for both, the landing points are different. For Medium flight the landing point is at Homes Garden near the school Dr. Graham's Home, while for High flight the landing point is at Relli River ground further down. There are couple of operators there. Ask the taxi driver and he will take you.
